0:28 What on earth made you study Sanskrit?
1:39 How did that study develop to become such a big part of your life?
3:59 Do you consider yourself an artist?
5:08 What are you trying to express as an artist?
6:17 So the Sanskrit is the vessel that helps you express yourself?
7:46 How do you choose the next chant that you're going to put to music?
10:17 Can you say more about it as a living, embodied practice in your life?
11:14 It sounds like it's more than an output as an artist?
12:50 Watching you chant, you seem to go somewhere...
14:44 What if you have to do a number of takes?
15:26 Maybe if you had to do several takes, it's not the right thing to be doing?
16:29 Are you thinking of doing any live shows?
17:28 Do you have a sense of where your audience is around the world?
18:13 Why is it gaining popularity?
20:51 How is the musical practice of Dhrupad feeding into this?
23:35 It all seems to have a spiritual basis?
26:16 Do you consider yourself a teacher?
28:35 Are people interested to learn?
    29:24 Why the name Gaiea?
31:36 If you're not of a culture, do you have a right to be a mouthpiece for it?
36:29 Where can people find you?

The Hindu metrics of time (Kaala Vyavahara) can be summarized as below:
    • a Lipta (लिप्ता) is approximately 0.4 seconds
    • a Vighati (विघटि) is 60 Liptas, or approximately 24 seconds
    • a Ghadika (घटि) is 60 Vighatis, or approximately 24 minutes
    • a Muhurta is equal to 2 Ghadikas, or approximately 48 minutes
    • a Nakshatra ahoratram (नक्षत्र अहोरत्रम्) or sidereal day is exactly equal to 30 Muhurtas (Note: A day is considered to begin and end at sunrise, not midnight.)
An alternate system described in the Vishnu Purana Time measurement section of the Vishnu Purana Book I Chapter III is as follows:
    100 Truti = 1 Tatpara
    30 Tatpara = 1 Nimesha
    15 Nimeshas = 1 Kásht́há
    30 Kásht́hás = 1 Kalá
    30 Kalás = 1 Kṣaṇa
    12 Kṣaṇa = 1 Muhúrtta
    30 Muhúrttas = 1 day (24 hours)
    30 days = 1 month
    6 months = 1 Ayana
2 Ayanas = 1 year or one day (day + night) of the gods
Small units of time used in the Vedas
    • a Trasarenu is the combination of 6 celestial atoms.
    • a Truti is the time needed to integrate 3 Trasarenus, or 1/1687.5th of a second.
    • a Vedha is 100 Trutis.
    • a Lava is 3 Vedhas.
    • a Nimesha is 3 Lavas, or a blink.
    • a Kshanas is 3 Nimeshas.
    • a Kashthas is 5 Kshanas, or about 8 seconds.
    • a Laghu is 15 Kashthas, or about 2 minutes.
15 Laghus make one Nadika, which is also called a danda. This equals the time before water overflows in a six-pala-weight [fourteen ounce] pot of copper, in which a hole is bored with a gold probe weighing four masha and measuring four fingers long. The pot is then placed on water for calculation.
    2 Dandas make one Muhurta.
6 or 7 Dandas make one Yamah, or 1/4th of a day or night.
4 Praharas or 4 Yamas are in each day or each night.
    LUNAR METRICS
a tithi (also spelled thithi ) or lunar day is defined as the time it takes for the longitudinal angle between the moon and the sun to increase by 12°. Tithis begin at varying times of day and vary in duration from approximately 19 to approximately 26 hours.
a paksa (also paksha) or lunar fortnight consists of 15 tithis
a masa or lunar month (approximately 29.5 days) is divided into 2 pakshas: the one between new moon and full moon is called gaura (bright) or shukla paksha; the one between full moon and new moon krishna paksha
    a ritu is 2 masa
    an ayanam is 3 rituhs
    a year is 2 Aayanas
    TROPICAL METRICS
    a Yaama (याम) = 1/4th of a day(light) or night [ = 7½ Ghatis (घटि) = 3¾ Muhurtas (मुहूर्त) = 3 Horas (होरा) ]
4 Yaamas 1 half of the day (either day or night)
    8 Yaamas 1 day (day + night)
an Ahoratram is a tropical day (Note: A day is considered to begin and end at sunrise, not midnight.)
Reckoning of time among other entities
Reckoning of time amongst the pitrs.
1 human day = 1/30 day of the pitrs
30 days of human is 1 month of human = 1 day of the pitrs
12 months of human = 1 year of the pitrs
The lifespan of the pitrs is 100 years of the pitrs (= 3,600 human years)
Reckoning of time amongst the Devas.
1 human year = 1 day of the Devas.
30 days of the Devas = 1 month of the Devas.
12 months of the Devas = 1 year of the Devas
The lifespan of the Devas is 100 years of the Devas (= 36,000 human years)
The Vishnu Purana Time measurement section of the Vishnu Purana Book I Chapter III explains the above as follows:
2 Ayanas (six month periods, see above) = 1 year or one day (day + night) of the devas
360 days of the devas = 1 year of the devas
12,000 years of the devas = 4 Yugas
    Reckoning of time for Brahma.
12,000 years of the Devas = 1 day of Brahma (4320,000,000 human years). This day is divided into 10, 000 parts called charanas.
The charanas are divided as follows:
    The Four Yugas
4 charanas (1,728,000 solar years) Satya Yuga
3 charanas(1,296,000 solar years) Treta Yuga
2 charanas(864,000 solar years) Dwapar Yuga
1 charanas(432,000 solar years) Kali Yuga
The cycle repeats itself so altogether there are 1000 cycles of yugas in one day of Brahma.
One cycle of the above four yugas is one mahayuga (4.32 billion solar years)
A manvantara consists of 71 mahayugas (306,720,000 solar years). Each Manvantara is ruled by a Manu.
After each manvantara follows one Sandhi Kala of the same duration as a Krita Yuga (1,728,000 = 4 Charana). (It is said that during a Sandhi Kala, the entire earth is submerged in water.)
A kalpa consists of a period of 1,728,000 solar years called Adi Sandhi, followed by 14 manvantaras and Sandhi Kalas.
    A day of Brahma equals
    (14 times 71 mahayugas) + (15 x 4 Charanas)
    = 994 mahayugas + (60 Charanas)
    = 994 mahayugas + (6 x 10) Charanas
    = 994 mahayugas + 6 mahayugas
    = 1000 mahayugas
as is confirmed by the Gita statement
    "sahasra-yuga paryantam ahar-yad brahmano viduH",
meaning, a day of brahma is of 1000 (maha-)yugas. Thus a day of Brahma, kalpa, is of duration: 4.32 billion solar years. Two kalpas constitute a day and night of Brahma
30 days of Brahma = 1 month of Brahma (259,200,000,000 human years)
12 months of Brahma = 1 year of Brahma (3,110,400,000,000 human years)
25 years of Brahma = 1 kalpa (77,760,000,000,000 human years)
    2 kalpas = 1 parardha (155,520,000,000,000 human years) [6]
2 parardhas = 100 years of Brahma, the lifespan of Brahma (311,040,000,000,000 human years)
The Vishnu Purana Time measurement section of the Vishnu Purana Book I Chapter III explains the above as follows:
360 days of the gods = 1 year of the gods
12,000 years of the gods = 4 Yugas
1,000 sets of 4 Yugas = a day of Brahmá
    50 years of Brahma = 1 Pararddham
    100 years of Brahma = 1 Param
    4,000 + 400 + 400 = 4,800 years = 1 Krita Yuga
    3,000 + 300 + 300 = 3,600 years = 1 Tretá Yuga
    2,000 + 200 + 200 = 2,400 years = 1 Dwápara Yuga
    1,000 + 100 + 100 = 1,200 years = 1 Kali Yuga
Alternately, the reigns of 7 Rishis, Indra and Manu = 1 Manwantara = 71x12,000+A (A is not given) = 852,000 years of the gods+A (A is not given)
    14 Manwantaras = a day of Brahmá
VEDIC TIME UNITS GREATER THAN A KALPA
Ancient vedic cosmology takes into account handful of time spans which are even greater than one Kalpa or a day of Brahma. One such unit is a "Maha-Kalpa" which is composed of 36000 such days of Brahma. One Maha-Kalpa is considered as the lifetime of Brahma. There are time units which are larger than one Maha-Kalpa. The largest of them has been calculated as several quadrillions of human years. This precise and massive calculations indicate one important aspect of vedic time system, that, whenever the term "Infinity" has been mentioned in Vedas, it does not indicate something very large. Instead, it appears that the term is meant to refer its literal synonym itself.

      @@AbhishekKumar-vp7ey Structure of Knowledge (Summary)
*All knowledge is divided into 2 parts i.e. Para & Apara
*Para means that which is beyond; which is obtained through the grace of Guru
Apara means that which is not beyond- that which is enumerated and which is studied under a preceptor. Apara is divided into two types- Shruti & Smriti
It’s is said in scriptures “Anantai Vai Vedah" ( The Vedas are unending)
*Veda comes from Sanskrit root Vid which means to know. The knowledge which is the basis of all creation, which decrees the nature of things from stars to atoms is Veda. When Rishi’s dived deep into meditation they perceived aspects of this knowledge.
*Shruti- that which was heard- is manifestation of knowledge that has been existing since the beginning of creation and perceived by Rishi’s & brought into the realm of expression.
*Smriti- that which is remembered- comes from experience of Mantra durasth tas- seer of knowledge
4 Vedas, 4 Upvedas, 6 Vedanga & 6 Upanga constitute the Shruti whereas Itihas, Purana & Agama constitute Smriti. In each of 4 vedas there are different Pathas or style. Each version is called Shakha.
*The Rig Veda consists the hymns in the praise of various divinities.
The Yajurveda is the practical application of Rgvedic hymns in Yajna or sacrifice.
SamVeda deals with the musical chanting of verses. Atharvaveda contains mantras with which one wards off misfortunes and brings about destruction of ones enemies.
*Each Veda divided into Samhita: These are the verses or hymns. Samhita forms the base much text books.
*Brahmanas: These are practical application of verses. They are commentaries on 4 Vedas dealing with proper performance of rituals.
*Aranyaka: means belonging to wilderness. They discuss the significance of rituals & meaning behind rituals. These could be equivalent to research papers of modern times where scientists discuss significance and workings of nature.
*Upanishad- Sanskrit meaning sitting close to the Master/ Guru. There are 3 different interpretations. Shankaracharya Adwait, Madhavacharya Dwait & Ramanujacharya Vishistdwait. Shankaracharya wrote commentaries on 11 upanishads which are considered to be the main upanishads.
*Each veda has an upveda (like sub veda). Rigveda which is concerned with Philosophy & Structure has Sthapatya as it’s Upveda. Yajurveda concerned with method of Yajnas has Dhanurveda as it’s upveda. Samaveda associated with rhythms has Gandharv as it’s upveda and Atharveda with Ayurveda ( Ayurveda=medicine or how to keep ones mind and body healthy)
*Vedanga. The knowledge of veda is so vast that we need some help in learning all of this mix Vedangs support the veda and enables us to use in daily life.
*1st is Shiksha- method of learning, where we learn sounds of alphabets where they produced from & how to learn.
2nd is Nirukta-meaning of sounds.Stringing alphabets gives meaning to them.Deciding which words means what is role of nirukta.
3rd is Vyakaran- Grammar. Now we have words. We need to make sentences. This is science of grammar. Vyakaran & Nirukta give meaning to what we talk.
*Chandas- The Rhythm. Even though we know the meaning of shlokas, we need to chant it in a particular rhythm. This is Chandas.
Jyotish- is the Time. There is time for everything & jyotish tells us about that eg. Suprabhatam(early morning) is appropriate to chant in morning.
*There are 3 parts of Jyotish- Astronomy Astrology and remedies.
Astronomy is an exact science which helps us to calculate the position of planet duration of astronomical phenomena phases of moon eclipses etc.
Astrology talks about effects of these movements on our life.
3rd aspect is upaya or methods to remedy these influences. The last one Kalpa- This vedanga decides what is appropriate for what situation. Purpose is to create harmony & Happiness in our lives. As truth is multidimensional. There are 6 upangas/ Shad darshan.
*6 philosophies inherent in vaidic scriptures. Nyaya- deals with logic. How do we know what we have studied is correct or not. how to recognise the proper logic. So Nyaya is abstract logic. Vaishesika- which is specific. What is special about object vaishesika answers.
*Vaishesika talks about matter & what it is made up of.
Sankhya- where vaishesika goes into microscopic, Sankhya goes into macroscopic. Origin & Size of universe, what are the stars, how many lokas (dimensions)
*Sankhya also concerned with analysis & divides creation into purusha & prakriti(masculine and feminine or the duality). The three gunas (good attribute) , panchkosha (5 elements)etc. These discussions found in Sankhya. Yoga- where Sankhya analyses, yoga synthesises. Yoga is not just asanas but a whole Philosophy. Refer Patanjali Yoga Sutra.
*After we obtained depth in yoga & meditation 🧘‍♂️ The Puja or Yajna becomes more effective. Thus poorv meemansa deals with yajna, temples etc. Uttar Meemansa or Vedanta- Literally means the end of veda. It deals with supreme knowledge in Vedas.
*Itihasa & Purana- Itihasa means it happened like that. Purana- Pure nava means that which is new in town. Thus this knowledge is so relevant & beyond time. It’s not surprising that most beautiful tools in spirituality- Bhagwat Geeta & Yog Vashishth - form part of these Itihasa
*Agama: Even though ultimate knowledge sees advaita everywhere, yet for the mind. Worship is the easiest tool to reach the divine. These Agamas consider 1 form as supreme. Ganpathya- Ganesha as supreme. Shaiva- Shiva, Shakti- mother goddess, vaikansa& panchatantra - Vishnu.

Gaiea is interviewed by her old school friend Geoffrey Murray about her creative journey thus far

What connects us is that you sing Sanskrit songs directly from the heart which in turn connects the every soul whoever is hearing it at that moment. It is clearly visible that when you sing a song or do anything without bothering about any goddamn thing, it always comes out the best. And a lot of people would not be able to do that including many Sanskrit Scholars in India. As rightly said, Sanskrit is the universal language because it transcends every soul. Even your nationality or identity doesn't matter. So no question about the ownership.

It was by pure chance (courtesy of the youtube algorithm) that i happened upon your video of madalasa's lullaby. I was amazed, partly by your perfect pronunciation and melodic voice and partly by the meaning of those words. I had been having these "nihilistic" thoughts for quite a while now (maybe my infrequent dpdr episodes, a year of depression, and exposure to buddhist teachings, particularly those of impermanence and emptiness, may have served as a foundation for setting up these thoughts), and it felt like i had found something that perfectly expressed what i had always felt a hint of but was too scared to admit. I subscribed to you channel and thank you for introducing me to the works of adi shankara (particularly your video on the nirvana shatakam and shambho). Though, i was born into a "hindu family" (whatever that means) i hadn't explored much of the classical "hindu" philosophy, buddism (vajryana) was and still is the dominant religion where i live. Since discovering your channel, i have started to read the philosophy of (as well as the epistemology behind) the vedanta, which i find is agreeable to my nature, and mode of thinking and would like to thank you for these chain of events.

Thai people who are inextricably linked to Indian cultures, especially Pali-Sanskrit languages, refuse to know more about the Sanskrit language. They view it as a dead and useless language. They are in a craze with learning English. Thai people hold English in such high regard that they ignore to learning other languages. Thanks for the thoughtful subtitles for G. Murray 's part, else it could have been challenging to fully understand him, given his accent.
Thanks & Please continue sharing the mesmerising chants. :)

Gaiea you put your work out on TH-cam but you cannot experience the spiritual and emotional beauty many of us feel listening to your voice and our third eye is awakened. For example your mantra against fear really has helped me lots. All you get is comments under your vids but they cannot convey the moment of spiritual calm we often feel in our soul listening to you and the Sanskrit. Thank you for all you do, your path is lush with success and future enlightenment

I grew up feeling way too shy to express anything. Years later I awaken to a desire to heal and find this lovely woman who speaks so eloquently. She inspires me to try singing again. I used to sing as a child but stopped before I was probably even 11 or so. Alas. I feel now is the time to take it up again as I write this in December 2021. Thanks for being someone who brings East and West more closely together Gaiea. My middle name is Gail so I share that energy. Probably why you feel so familiar. Thanks to you both for this lovely interview. AUMMMMM.

I think there is a global spiritual diaspora that tunes in to the innate spirituality and I think the joyful and ancient frequency of Sanskrit and your beautiful chanting calls our hearts to 'home' the place where all of us, whomsoever we are and wheresoever we may be , belong. This is a sacred gift. Thank you.

So many people abroad are loving Sankrit..even Modern Indian youths are also trying to dig deep into their roots and rich history. But Without the revival of Sanskrit, it is not possible I'm afraid. I have to give respect to the people down south for having the courage and strength to fight for their languages and to keep Tamil, another one of the rich and probably the oldest written language alive.

I like, the humbleness and respect given to sanskrit and where it came from, the honesty of the answers. And totally appreciate those of India origin, that are once or twice removed, who find this inspiring, since the sankrit articulation is so clear, and also, meanings are expressed in English, and made available via TH-cam amd other media, making it accessible. It will bring a resurgence of interest and reinstatement of sankrit. Please do continue. Hari Bol ! 🕉🙏🏽😊

@@hz7988 Your response inspired the following post from my on a Facebook Sanskrit study group.
Hello. I recently started studying Sanskrit. Of course it is potentially one or more lifetimes of study! Now I can sound out words, for example I recognize the text above is the Gayatri mantra.
My interest is to learn individual words and phrases in mantras and the Gita in detail, to engage my mind and heart as fully as possible to support meditation on their profound truths and spiritual power. I feel motivated to come to my own interpretations which are as informed as possible. I believe this is my version of jñāna yoga. It is also a joy to delve as deeply as possible.
For example, "'varenyam' is derived from the verb root 'vr̥' =to choose, to select; it means the most choosable, the best" (wisdomlib.org). Translations one sees might be "worthy" or something like that, which seems pretty weak when really "delectable" is also possible... The subtle nuances of meaning are part of what makes Sanskrit so "varenyam" to study!
Having said that, I don't know what case (kāraka) it's in in this phrase, I think it's an adjective (?).
Pronunciation is also fascinating and important to me. I know "bhūr" has a long "u" and an aspirated "b," which is not so bad, but for the retroflex ("cerebral") sounds I would need help.
Other resources I've found for myself are
      bhagavadgitareader.wordpress.com/all-videos/
      www.holy-bhagavad-gita.org/
      Academy of Indian Philosophy (YT)
Hard copy of the Gita I'm going with is the one by Sri Chidbhavananda. |
For me getting a firm grip phrase by phrase would be the sweet spot beyond individual words but not plunging into conjunct consonants, dual-voice verb endings and variations on sandhi except in context of inspiring phrases. That's my approach.
"The Sanskrit Channel" is excellent for me, maybe others would be interested in working through these with me? Slowly but surely?
      Thanks, namaste.
