    I've got a tenth of your collection, but I'm out every week buying DVDs and even rare VHS. My friends are always on me about the worthlessness of DVDs. They're into the streaming and the Ice films. But I love the physical disc. I love having a constant cache of films in my home that I haven't seen and I'm excited to see. You guys, Cooldude and Wetmovie1, inspire me to keep the collection going. Thanks for your videos. You're not the only dvd geeks out there.

    Blu-rays and movies will be around or as long as consumers buy them en masse. Blu-rays especially will last because the hard core movie fans want the extras, the ability to collect, and the ability to "show" their collection. Streaming is like renting. That's why the rental market (e.g. Blockbuster) went out but sales are still good. ITunes has digital copies now and they have not put sales of blu-rays out of business for reasons I mentioned above.

    Also, the virtual reality thing made me remember something. A year or so ago I read that some company in Japan is working on something called the Immersive Cocoon that's supposedly going to be kind of similar to the holodeck from Star Trek. I haven't heard anything else about it but it might be interesting to look up and read about.

    Im older - I remember when Cable TV was new! In 1977-78 when we got cable, it was at the point where the OTHER side of the street had cable first and we had to wait a year until it came down the street and down to our side of the street!!!!

    This is why I am of the position that the Mom and Pop stores will make a comeback. The major movie sellers i.e. Blockbuster, Suncoast, FYE, ect. will shut down to accommodate for the streaming wave, but the locally owned shops that specialize in selling old formats will pull the customers that want to keep purchasing the tangible product.
    There is a shop near my house called Edward McKay's used books and more. I exclusively shop there for movies. Can't get any better than a special ed. for $3.

    I'm not a DVD collector (despite enjoying Shawn's videos) but where CDs are concerned, in the past 10 or so years I've only purchased probably a total of 5 CDs. Most of the time I only like a couple of songs on any given CD anyway so I like the option of buying per song. I love not having the extra clutter, too.

  • @robert2339

    With cable services capping download speeds and charging extra if you go over your allotted amount is a big reason DVDs and Blu-rays are going to stick around for the foreseeable future.
    The other reason is that people like to physically be able to touch and hold what they own. However stores like Best Buy are going to go the way of Borders.

    @coolduder I'll continue to get dvd's/blu rays. 1. It's a physical copy that i'll have until i don't want it anymore. 2. Looking for them actually gets me out of the house. 3. I'm an extras geek, streaming doesn't have them. I DO have netflix and DO love it but like you touched upon titles can be gone in no time. Not to mention every movie/tv show ever done in history is available to stream for whatever reason(learned this looking for True Blood) That's my view, Love the old ways but will adapt.

  • @TheUnboxerMan

    I would have to say it is tempting to buy a "virtual file" of a DVD that is now out-of-print and the sellers jacking the price up to $50+, while I can go on Amazon and buy the movie for $10 and watch instantly without having to worry if that $50 DVD I just bought will play or not. It really isn't a bothersome since most of us have PCs hooked up to televisions anyway, but I would rather have a physical copy of the disc to add to my collection.

    I believe the physical disc (or other) based medium will live on for a very long time. There are always people who like to collect physical things.
    I'll stream things but I do buy many films, games, books etc and I don't get rid of them afterwards. It's just nice to have the physical item, what happens when your entertainment cloud company gets shut down or bankrupt and then all stored data and account info is destroyed.

  • @VargasVault
    @VargasVault 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree with your points here guys
    I really hope DVD's and Blurays don’t die out, cause as a movie lover and collector, it’s just not the same seeing a movie/show streamed as opposed to owning the physical object and popping it into a DVD player
    Plus, if something were to happen to the streaming services, like their servers going down or something happening to their databases… guess what, no one would be able to watch anything
    So I’m keeping my movie collection, cause I love it

    I pray to Kubrick that the era of DVDs or blu-rays will never end. I really enjoy all the special features that they come with on video and to wait for every other movie to be re-released on a software to download would be unfair.

  • @ther3dr00m

    I dont think that physical copies of movies will ever die out. There are still a large amount of people that like to go out and get the physical copy of the movie. When it does eventually die out, which I dont think will be for many many years, it will become sort of like record collecting or laserdisc collecting

  • @ScarecrOmega
    @ScarecrOmega 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    ya, i'd say almost everything with be digital in 5 years. they could definitely make it sooner but im sure they will want people to buy as many blu rays as possible within that time. it's hard to think that people wouldn't want to buy blu rays and go completely digital, people like to have physical collections.

  • @NeilGartshoreFifeFlickFanatic
    @NeilGartshoreFifeFlickFanatic 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    For me I will forever buy blu rays and DVDS as they have subtitles fixed on them which for me, as someon'e who's hearing impaired, is the better option. From what I've seen the digital age, streaming films, restricts that and DVDs have always been fantastic for subtitles. I've yet to find any streaming service to display subtitles so I'll stick with the hardware.

  • @Moonlite.88

    It's sad that everything is trying to go digital and I think it all will in about 10 years from now. I grew up in the video generation as well. I still remember going to Block Buster every weekend and picking up my favorite movies on VHS. Then DVDs came around and I made a huge mistake by getting rid of our entire VHS collection just because DVDs were new back then. I know now that I won't ever get rid of my favorite DVDs in my collection. I will support DVDs and Blu-Rays for as long as I can.

    Personally, I'm against digital for a multitude of reasons. I love collecting dvds and blu-ray's and having the actual box in my hand. But also, I have bought a couple digital movies on Amazon and you can't really do much with them. The only place you can watch them is on your computer or an Amazon capable device. With Netflix, it seems more often than not I'll go to watch a movie and they either don't have it or it was pulled due to the contract being up.

  • @driekone

    Hey fellas, good video topic. I kind of view this issue like I do vinyl. Vinyl has been making a comeback. There are still many collectors. Even VHS is huge on ebay. I even purchase and bid on vhs on ebay. But I don't know, it just seems that many people still want the tangible item, with all the artwork, and the special editions, directors cuts, with all the extras. I still buy music cd's too, although many people haven't bought a cd in a while. It is a hobby to collect things.

    im luckey enough to remember vhs when it first came out, in the late 70's, ive been collecting movies since then, i still havea good few vhs titles and rare ones to.. Now dvd came out in 97 ish and yes it was big and i think it will stay around for quite a while, blu-ray is still on the other hand a new format to a lot of ppl so i dont think that will be going anywhere for a good good few years yet..if they phase dvd out il still keep my collection i wouldnt sell them as there personel to me

    I have 430 titles in my streaming queue. I have 180 titles in the dvd queue. I have 41 titles saved. Also I regularly make a notepad list so I don't lose track of expiring titles from streaming.

  • @wapudblues
    @wapudblues 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm so frustrated with the digital format. Certain titles are available for a limited time only. It's really annoying when you've waited to purchase a particular digital title and it's no longer available. In addition, I've noticed in digital certain scenes are missing as opposed to the hard copy. Because of this I'll stick to purchasing dvd/blu ray copies. It seems every time I go shopping for a particular copy I can't seem to find one locally. I'm finding that the dvd section in the department stores are shrinking much like the cds did. Anyways, I hope you never have to move because that's a lot of movies to pack.

    It sucks that FYE is failing in California, It's doing fine in Indiana as far as I know. I hope they stay in business for a long time. They have the best in-store selection of cds in my area, If they go I'll have to order absolutely everything off the internet.

    I thought about using netflix, all the ads and stuff say 6.99 per month and fine you pay that just for netflix, but if I watched a movie everyday for a month my broadband bill would be over it's limit so there'd be extra charges. So getting 4 or 5 blu-rays for $£€25 whatever, you can have them whenever you want and you only pay once

    In my opinion, the big problem (at least for me) isn't so much streaming or the death of the physical format. My problem is: IF the physical format dies, how do we convert the material on the disc (main movie, menus, extras) to streaming? If someone can invent a quick, convenient, one step process to do that, I think a lot of my anxieties (and those of a lot of other people) will be solved.

  • @FranksWarJournal

    I remember someone doing a similar video to this but about video games. The way he concluded, streaming definitely had a big place in the future but wasn't THE future.
    That's kind of the way I see it for movies. I definitely think streaming will be (and is now but that's not the point) very popular but I think there will still be people who would rather own blu-rays or just don't have the internet access or whatever. It very well could happen but I don't think BRs will go, at least for a while.

    The machine you were describing that 'scans' the Blu Rays and DVDs you have, is literally the same concept of digital copies that come with Blu Rays. I think digital copies will dominate the market, because you have services like Apple's iCloud that places your digital items on all your devices. Digital Copies are the future.

  • @TheWisestWizards

    I loooove collecting DVD's and Blu-Ray's but it almost feels redundant and a waste of money getting them now due to streaming. I use Apple TV for most of my movies now and Netflix. I'm hoping when illegal downloading gets put to a stop and people realize with online you get no features and that true movie feel, home media will make a comeback.

    @dreno4618 you're being ignorant. I said "im not saying it's coming sometime soon". 11 years really isn't much, and I do realize that some people still buy CD's - but are they going to do that in 20 years from now? Physical form is going away, of course it is. And how would the studios lose money? They would make more, considering the elimination of packacking and stuff.

    DVD and Blu Rays have just been given an extended life and may be around for a very long time now! Comcast and other huge greedy internet providers are in the process of introducing bandwidth caps for subscribers of 250-300 GB per month. Since streaming just one HD movie can burn up as much as 5 GB and using Skype video chat will burn one GB an hour it's pretty easy to use up 300 GB in one month. This will mean a resurgence of DVD and Blu Ray rentals and they ain't going away no time soon.

    In Denmark Blockbuster tried doing DVD's that stoppes working. You'd buy them and then within a month or something they'd turn into blank discs do to some chemical reaction in the disc.
    They were cheaper than regular DVD's, but it flopped big time, I think it was like 5 years ago or something when they tried it. Just a horrible idea.

    I think streaming is the future, but I think they have to completely change their business model before it can have a shot at making physical media obsolete. The idea of licensing each individual movie is a nightmare when it comes to widespread streaming -- Netflix streaming needs a much wider selection before I'd consider paying for it.

    I think another problem that comes from streaming everything, will be with the internet providers. Can they really offer unlimited internet access to everybody ? Everything uses internet now, so it's highly possible the internet providers will limit how much we can download to save money. Then you find yourself with the problem of not being able to stream if you watch a lot of films. With DVD or Blu-ray you can watch as many as you want, as many time as you want.

  • @Ggarry

    Great question. I doubt that any of the corporate retail outlets that make the majority of their $ from dvd/cd sales will survive beyond the next 18 months. Why don't you guys get proactive and open up (what will become) a specialty shop that sells new and used dvds. You can have a little shop AND sell online. With the knowledge that you both have I would suspect it would be a huge success. Here is the other question... What do you have to lose?

    I think DVD's will always be collectible - probably more so if they are phased out, they'll just gain a retro cache. They really have to be one of the best things to collect because they're so lightweight! My records on the other hand are murder to move around, lol

    I prefer to have a physical copy of my movies, whether BR or DVD, but on the other hand I am an all online music guy. I don't even bother looking for actual CDs anymore, and all physical CDs I have have been imported into files. Hard to imagine doing the same with movies. Had a top-loading betamax with a wired remote, lol. Just glad Dad didn't get into laserdisc, geez, can you even still find those?

    I hope it never totally happens in Canada we still have quite a few shops that sale DVD's and Blu-ray"s hmv is one of my favorite places for movies and I think streaming is getting bigger but I think DVD and Blu-ray will be around for a while more and they might be like records and laser disc like they will be gone but if you look hard enough you'll still find movies and plays I have a fairly big collection myself of DVD and Blu-ray have between 3 and 4 hundred titles and with streaming as you guys said they don't have all the stuff you want to see sometimes or there just around for a bit then they leave the site and plus the picture and sound are not always the best on streaming sites with dvd and Blu-ray you know it will probably be good plus I personally love the special features of stuff

    i can see dvd's being around for the next ten to twenty years. just because there is a huge amount of people who changed formats from VHS to DVD and don't want to change again. i will never change formats after disks i don't see a huge difference in a disk or card. maybe the next generation of kids will be all about streaming but they will never have a chance to see rare classics that dvd collectors have in their collection. so i think when dvd's do go out of format they will be ultra valuable

    I am happy with my DVDs, we do have both streaming and Netflix by-mail, we use both, i have noticed that i wont buy TV shows if i can find them on there instead, id rather spend the $8 rather than $32-38 for the set, althought it is convenient and u can take it with you, i dont think that hard copies of entertainment will end, i think they will just both exist, maybe someday they will be stored on flash drive type devices so they dont take up as much space as our current collections hhaha

    I think DVD's will be phased out in 10 years, and Blu Rays in 15. Maybe they'll be replaced by another hard format before everything goes virtual.Either way they'll always be collectors keeping the dvd/blu ray trade going

    @TheNightHouseChannel They can go up to any definition when your downloading or streaming, Blu-Ray looks most likely going to be the last physical format cause companies will be like "what's the point" of coming up with a new format only to be bettered by something that's in the space within a few weeks....
    My local multiplex cinema has just installed 4k screens and the pictures are absolutely stunning on their giant screens, why would anyone want 8k or even 4k on their television screens? :/

    Netflix doesn't have the licencing in other countries like it does in the US and so the selection of movies isnèt very good. Streaming also has to get a lot better in order to phase out blu-ray quality wise. I think that right now DVDs and blu-rays are way to profitable to be phased out. I mean think how much it costs those companies to put together those packages and then what they sell for! Its huge money.
