Actually, this video uses Angelina's 16yo Official Cover Video from Republic Records. If this video had used the 12/13yo studio version you reference, there would not have been an issue with the miss-matched keys - Angelina changed key on I HAVE NOTHING at age 16, so in reality, Whitney and 16/17yo Angelina are not really compatible, in the sense of Audio, that is. You can hear a different take on this on my channel - a project I finished before the holiday - it includes all 9 known & usable I HAVE NOTHING performances given by Angelina to date - ages 13, 15, 16, 17. Different keys make it hard to follow the song melody. And it makes not much sense to compare the two recordings in a way of competition. Angelina is a mezzo alto singer, Whitney Houston was a soprano. That gives Whitney's voice more projection, but it sounds "thin". Angelina's voice sound less brilliant than Whitney in the high notes, but has more depth and warmth. We hear Whitney's studio version in the key of G. She was never able or willing to reproduce the song in that same key live - she preferred to sing it two semitones lower, in F. Angelina sings it in E here, one semitone lower than Whitney's live performances.
OK, here's my opinion!!! Do AJ fans have their pitchforks ready, lol!! After many stabbings, I thought about what some people have said about how age matters, and it does. I listened to Whitney Houston as a 16 year old, and her voice isn't as nice in tone and resonance as AJ, but, WH had perfect diction and really rounded her high notes, where I believe, AJ stretches for the high notes and her diction REALLY lacks, sometimes. Mind you, this is at them BOTH being 16. But, live is always better than recorded so that's strike 1, and tbh, even I know that you can't compare a 16 year old with "the voice" in her late 20s. So while I think people are out there to compare, I mean, come on, we ARE talking about Whitney Houston. Give AJ 12 years and see because WH went from ok to the best in 12 years and AJ already has a jump with her tone and resonance.
Angelina is not striving for "perfect diction". She chooses to manipulate her vowels and consonants for effect. Not the right sound for everyone. Personally, I LOVE IT.
