Joanie robertson unfortunately there are those who walk this life being tone deaf, blind to the colors. And you can’t convince a blind man of what he can’t see.
@@suewalker3600 - "Nashville" did ... said he sang through his nose and at the wrong pitch ... It's just cause he broke through the system of "dependency on them" and was still successful in spite of their attempts to control him
My brother, Bud Reneau, was the co-writer of this song, along with Doyle Marsh. It's always been one of my favorites. It was sung by many people and played by Mantivani.
This is one of those songs that will never leave your memory alone..I to this day cannot tell you why but since I first heard it back in 1969..it left me an emotional wreck then as it does today. Most sad or message songs are played in a minor chord ..e minor primarily I've learned and the sweet yet sad melody just wipes me out..Then ..you put the lyrics of this masterpiece into the capable hands of a Waylon Jennings and you have as near of a perfect song as I know about....
Great tune. One of a handful of late 60s country-tinged songs that screamed melancholy, sadness, and sentimentality. Similar to Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey", Glen Campbell's "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" and "Everything a Man Could Ever Need"
FANTASTIC! This brings back so many happy memories. When I was young I didn't appreciate what I had until I threw it away. the only thing that I have left now is my memories. Nobody to blame other than myself.
I've heard that Waylon didn't really like this song but I think it is one of his best. This emotional song can sound a bit sappy from a less masculine voice but Waylon makes it work.
Saw Waylon perform this in 1973 at Max's Kansas City in New York- 4 years after it came out (listened to WJRZ "Countrypolitan" radio station). Reliving terrific memories on here 40 years later. Thanks for uploading.
Hey Bart, I heard that show was awesome. Apparently, he really won the New York crowd over. Does this sound about right? Just noticed your post was 9 years ago. Anyways, I will leave my question and maybe you will see it. Thanks
I hadn't heard this song for decades, so I searched for it in Cyberspace, and found this version. I had forgotten whose version I first heard, but Waylon still evoked the emotion that I remembered when I was young. A beautiful sad song.
I first heard this song as a teenager and it deeply struck me. Now all these decades later it makes me feel so very grateful that I, in fact, had a child - wonderful daughter!
Yes ..it's his voice telling the story..others have did this song but, Waylon has always been very convincing!! It is beautiful!! All i could say is i would never leave him because he could give me a child!..Just listen to me!!..LOL..LOL...
This song owns my soul..It never fails to break me down in tears evry time I hear it...Music like this...told to us from Waylons perspective..Makes this unbelievably sad but beautiful truth hurts what only my inner failures tell me is my alibi
'Days Of Sand And Shovels'-Recorded Dec 1968. This is the not issued version and a great example of what Waylon was talking about. RCA messing with his recording! Chet and Danny Davis added strings to this one in Mar 1969 and then released it as a single 1969, charted # 20. Released version is 16 seconds shorter and it didn't need the strings. The other side is 'Delia's Gone' and Waylon wanted RCA to promote it to 'pop' radio. They didn't. It got country airplay and charted #37...srj
when I was growing up we only had a few albums, dunno what its called but this was on it (plus macarthur park, love of the common people and deliah, all remind me of my childhood now, all brilliant songs
I had to type in some lines from this song to find it, couldn't remember the name, just that it was Waylon. The first time I had this song it was on an 8-track tape that my dad made me when I was around 8 years old. Thank you for posting it. It is beautiful.
@SkidRowJim THANK YOU JIM FOR THE GREAT ADDED HISTORY OF THAT MASTERPIECE...I HAVE FOLLOWED WAYLON EVERY SINCE HE AND BUDDY HOLLY WERE PALS..I wonder..Do you have any thoughts about the other Texas rocker who was killed ..or perhaps murdered in 1966...Bobby Fuller?
@pigman45 ...We all have failed in most of our attemptS aT CIVILITY...OR..BECOMING WHAT OTHERS CALL .."NORMAL"..SOME OF US JUST NEVER GOT THE DRILL QUITE RIGHT..AND HENCE OUR FALL TO ..THIS..bE NICE TO YOU MY FRIEND..wE AIN'T NEARLY AS BAD AS THE SAY WE ARE
Great song. However, I agree with St Pauli: Bobby Vinton's version just feels so much more poignant. But then, Bobby's was the first version I heard and that, perhaps, explains my bias.
Sorry sir, but,😮 you no sing as good as Charlie pride, this song " sand and shovels """""go learn from him. Good luck. Poor man Charlie, he's dead....I wonder why????? Cabal, cabal we see them all. Do you??????
I real love his voice on every song, RIP hoss

and they say Waylon's voice isn't really a "good voice", yeah right, the best ever.
Joanie robertson unfortunately there are those who walk this life being tone deaf, blind to the colors. And you can’t convince a blind man of what he can’t see.
Who said Waylons voice wasn't very good? I have never heard this until I saw your comment.

That voice that unmistakable mellow voice can be haunting but beautiful there will never be another Waylon we lost a great part of country music

My brother, Bud Reneau, was the co-writer of this song, along with Doyle Marsh. It's always been one of my favorites. It was sung by many people and played by Mantivani.
My uncle Nat Stuckey covered it as well. It was his last charted hit.
Nobody can sing this song as well as Waylon. Waylon is still the best singer ever. Miss you a lot Waylon.

No one can touch the soul like Waylon.
I love this song, I have it in A box set. Waylon was A great friend of mine.!!
The best voice in history
Great tune. One of a handful of late 60s country-tinged songs that screamed melancholy, sadness, and sentimentality. Similar to Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey", Glen Campbell's "Dreams of the Everyday Housewife" and "Everything a Man Could Ever Need"
Waylon has a real singer's quality, craggy, rough, his style that's his alone. RIP WJ.
I miss Waylon.
Waylon Jennings, hold me a seat in heaven. God Bless You ........ Merry Christmass 2010........ Party on my friend

His voice can not be replaced
I'd adopt a child and keep Waylon :)
Lord knows there will nevva be another Waylon. I miss this man so much it's unreal...

Another of my favorites! So wish I could find the CD that has this and "Delia's Gone."

no matter what,it just is so sad.
Nat Stuckey also did a great version
Great version by Roy Clark
just heard his son delias gone and it sounded a bit like house of the rising sun and this song sounds a bit like little green apples, good though
THE WINSTONS SANDS AND SHOVELS IS AN EXCELLENT VERSION, IF YOU LIKE JAZZ.
I thought I was the only person who liked Winstons recordings that weren't Amen or Color him father.
Yes, I really thought it was a wonderful version of the song, I had never heard it before until then.
If you don't mind me askin, how do you feel about their version of A Handful of Friends
I have not played it, I will go there now thank you for the suggestion.
Love it, rather pretty, will add it to my play list,Thank you very much for a thoughtful song.
What a song but no one can do it like Bobby.Waylon was much better as an outlaw.
Great rendition, but Bobby Vinton sang it better.
I disagree... Bobby Vinton did it better. Not that Waylon is bad.. Just saying I preferred Bobby's version better.
Check out Bobby Vinton - I think he sings this song better.
