Im so proud of me, when I got in USA i was trying to watching some of your videos but i didn’t understand nothing! Today, 9 months after, I’m learning with your channel, Which means that i improved my English extremely fast! You are a part of my accomplishment. Thank you so much Sir
***** :) Thanks. I usually say that "fun" is for exciting things (The party was so fun.), and "funny" is for jokes (The man tells lots of funny jokes). In general, of course... :)
***** Thanks. :) Best wishes learning English. I am currently giving away a 20 minute sample lesson for free (usually it's $5), if you're interested: www.speakenglishwithvanessa.com/freelesson/
I had a lot of fun watching this lesson! I start learning english in 2009 when I met an amazing "gringo" guy who now is my husband. I keep learning every day!
I went to a university which was 80% foreign students and heard these mistakes often. I was not good enough with my own language to explain what they were doing wrong but I know now! :)
I'm fluent in English, and still found it rather interesting to watch your lesson. English is complicated, and even I have issues sometimes, so it was fun to hear the explanation on "an" and "a". Thankyou for your video :)
What a good teacher you are James. I like your way of teaching, it's very efficient for the foreign learners. Thank you a lot and all the best. Seb from France.
the trick about of Other and Another was very good, I've never realized about that, the differences was in the words, this class is my favorite when I forget a specific rule
You´re the best , please make another videos in common mistakes , so others like me can come back. We can learn, enjoy and have fun!! Great teachers equals to great students !
Hey James, You are right about the thing that speaking correctly or not makes other people judge you. I learnt english in Peru when I was 13 yo, I'm 31 now and I'm here in the US for 3 years now and there are people that think i was raised here but I still want keep learning colloquial phrases. Could you recommend me a book. Of course I;m watching your lessons!!!!!!
English was not my first language, but since I've lived in the US my whole life, I basically went to school learning only English. So I've always had all the English honors classes, and I get truly shocked when I hear people not know how to use English words correctly! And some people I meet in my Spanish natives class will be neither good in Spanish nor English. I'm luckily very fluent in both. But aside from that, I've strangely never heard anyone misuse the words you just taught :)
1:48 In the UK usually the front side of the fingers are shown to indicate 2, showing the back side of two fingers is like ticking someone off, I thought. Your lectures are pretty good and fun. Keep it up.
when it comes to ''do'' and ''make'',you're saying that we use ''do'' when we act.however,we officially use the phrase ''make the bed'' instead of saying ''do the bed''.whether or not,it's an action!
Congratulations Mr. James because you are a very good professor. I am really happy because of your videos. The reason is that some of my doubts have been clarified by them. Best wishes, Ash from Costa Rica.
Yes that's true!!! these are common mistakes in spoken English and I can confirm this because I have had the same mistakes before. Good one "Other or Another'' and about "Make or Do" is so difficult when you try to spake English and it's not your native language to know how to use correctly both verbs. Thank you for let us know the right way using these pairs of words.
Thanks teacher...that was a great explanation. Now I'll DO my best with the OTHER things about grammar I need to improve my English and to be FAIR I'll also start to have FUN and MAKE good money as you do to COME BACK to this site as soon as I can. Bye!
veryyyyy nice this class ........now i finally got it right ,,,,,other and another ,,,,the differences now are much clear ,,,,,,thank u for this free class on web ...but sometimes i cant understand one word from u when u start to speak fast....i need to learn more ,,,,
These mean exactly the same thing, here's why: "I'm coming with you" is like, I'm going to stay beside you as we go "I'm going with you" is like, I'm going to travel over there with you I can't think of any situation where you would want to use one instead of the other, and I think I use both equally.
Thank you Mr James, You are a very good teacher! I'm having fun learning english. I am going to watch another video of EngVid.com and I will do my homework, wich is to practice. You see? I'm learning :)
I really understand your point. I still don't know why many people still can't get the difference between Then vs Than or use I didn't went instead I didn't go. Also they use And and But in a wrong way too.
Know what really confuses a non-native speaker? It's the use of articles, namely a, an and the. It's really a bother if you are not a native. I even heard that articles are the last thing to distinguish between a native and a non-native English speaker.
'Come back' means to return to where you are right now (in the present). Go back means to return to where you were (in the past). "Come back and visit us" is what you would say to someone who was "going back" to his home country. You could also say "I will come back to America after I go back to Germany" for example. This means that you are in America now and will return to America after you go home to Germany. Hope that helps.
If I didn't already speak english this would have been really helpful. I think about my friends at school and how many of them don't know these diffrences, so of them don't even know some words to, it's not a matter of choice they've got just one word, they put it everywhere no matter if it does make sense to others. The problem really is speaking, they're not able to discuss because they're not good at understanding but completely unable to formulate a sentence. We need motherlanguage teachers.
hi...nice video... i am from india and here dont make the mistakes you mentioned above (courtesy british rule we had ages ago) but we make other mistakes especially when dealing with americans
I like the way way you do ur homework for the making such videos, it was really great fun.I haven't find any another such teaching material that equals ur quality of work.Hope u ll come back with more videos on other topics :-)
After you "made" the homework you have a physical thing, the paper with your writing on it. You made that. Now the way it is used in English puts more emphasis on the act of doing it. In German the phrase would be "Ich (I) habe meine (have my) Hausaufgaben (homework) gemacht (made)" The explanation about do and make is illogical. It is a passabel mnemonic probably, but I would say it's still arbitrary. Mostly it reminds me of how teachers like to be wise-asses.
Equal= Getting the same reward as everyone else regardless of input. Fair:Getting something of equal value to the effort expended, relative to everyone else.
When i watch too many videos about how to speak English i start to forget how >.< by tomorrow im not going to be able to talk to my family. "i could do you...dont ask what that means im not going to tell u" i feel special knowing what it means!....y am i watching this O.o
James! You make* english fun and also funny! *I'm quite sure it is "make", but I don't know why, I just feel that. Could you explain this case? Thanks a lot!
Can I ask you to make lessons "" how to understand native speakers "" because some of them don't talk in a clear way ...my request is related to Pronunciation when a native speaker speaks

"Fun or funny" is a pretty difficult one! My Korean students struggle with that one a lot. :)
Just tell them "Fun" is for good things, while "funny" may not describe good things. I'm an Asian. I know what they think about. Hahahahah....
***** :) Thanks. I usually say that "fun" is for exciting things (The party was so fun.), and "funny" is for jokes (The man tells lots of funny jokes). In general, of course... :)
Teacher Vanessa No wonder you're a teacher and I'm an English learner. you explained perfectly.
***** Thanks. :) Best wishes learning English. I am currently giving away a 20 minute sample lesson for free (usually it's $5), if you're interested: www.speakenglishwithvanessa.com/freelesson/
+Teacher Vanessa Thank you, Vanessa.
I had a lot of fun watching this lesson! I start learning english in 2009 when I met an amazing "gringo" guy who now is my husband. I keep learning every day!
Aww, that's so sweet!! Congratulations!
Nice lesson - I see these mistakes a lot with my students too.
I am an English teacher, and this video was my today's lesson. Thanks dear for this work. Keep it up (Y)
the reason foreigners may mess up on do and make is because in other european languages the verb for to make is the same as for to do
French is like that.
I went to a university which was 80% foreign students and heard these mistakes often. I was not good enough with my own language to explain what they were doing wrong but I know now! :)

Those are definitely very common mistakes! 'Make' and 'do' are quite confusing for most of my students.
I like your explanation for 'other/another'!

Thanks a lot James you are the best teacher I have ever seen
