  • How to make an external NOAA Weather Radio antenna out of RCA audio / video patch cable.
    An easy way to improve reception on any brand NOAA weather radio that has an external antenna jack with items found at thrift stores and or dollar tree.
    Materials needed:
    1 NOAA weather radio with a RCA female external antenna jack.
    1 length of audio / video patch cable with RCA male connectors, the longer the better, a length 7 feet long was used in this video.
    2 20 inch lengths of 22 to 14 gauge wire.
    Electrical tape or any other tape.
    2 small suction cups with hooks, or tape would also work.
    If your NOAA weather radio does not have a external antenna jack, try wrapping a wire 20 to 72 inches long to the antenna of the unit.

    Loved this video, I’m 13 and I just got my first Wr-100. The antenna was broken, and this worked really well. Since my window is fully metal (around the glass), I just got a magnet, and attached it to the wire. Works like a charm, and thank you! Please don’t ever give up in life.

    Thank you. I needed this information for my weather radio. I live in a mobile home in the country and the only way I was getting a signal was outside my home. With your technique I now get reception inside and have peace of mind.

    Clear directions. Adding this simple vertical dipole to my Midland wr300 let me pull in 3 stations where before, it would only receive one barely.

    Is there a way to boost the weather radio portion of a combination AM / FM / weather radio? I was thinking of opening up one of my radios and then finding the internal weather radio antenna and then connecting it to your antenna. Just how hard would it be to add a RCA jack to one of these?

      What is the brand and model number?
      If it has a telescoping rod antenna then try wrapping some wire around that and if you notice a improvement in reception then yes an addition of a female RCA jack may work, just remember that there is 2 connections to a RCA jack the inner one and the shield, the shield would need to be soldered to the ground plane of the radio board.

    NOAA is not smart. With today's tech, NOAA should be in every new automobile. They should have an pay app. They can still sell radios with midland, but hey its just money lying on the ground. They should pick it up.

      To work properly a built-in NOAA weather radio in a car would have to be tied into a GPS system and have a database of which of the 7 channels serve what location the vehicle is in to receive warnings for where it is.

    • @j7v7a2
      @j7v7a2 ปีที่แล้ว

      NOAA is there to provide a service, and that's what they are doing. So to say that 'they are not smart' because they are not doing what you think they should, is unfair.
      They are also, not in the business of selling apps or radios.
      If every new automobile doesn't come with a NOAA radio, it's probably because most people don't want it or don't know about it, or just don't want to pay for it, it's not like automobile manufactures are going to add it for free.

      @@Legend813a If it was automatic, that would be cool.
      I would assume that the owner of such a radio could just initially tune their NOAA radio to a local station. Also, with the addition of S.A.M.E, could they just not select the geographical location.
      I know that 'back in the day' mobile phones had a build-it FM radio, and used the headphones as an antenna, it's to bad that seems to have died, those phones had GPS.
      I guess the best we can do now is to use an old mobile phone with GPS and an app to tune an SDR.
      A cool week-end project, too bad we can't buy something from the dollar store for $10.

    How long was the original patch cable before you started cutting it up? Also, how long did you leave the wire on the patch cable that you used for the antenna?

    • @Legend813a
      @Legend813a  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the patch cable has a good quality shield I'd think runs of 20 feet would be okay.

  • @Barnabas45
    @Barnabas45 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you need to take off the original antenna to use an external antenna?

    • @Legend813a
      @Legend813a  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you do not need to remove the telescopic antenna, just leave it in the stowed position.
      I removed the one on this video to demonstrate how the external improved reception compared to a normal extended antenna, and a 'damaged' antenna.

    Do you understand wavelengths and antenna design?

    • @Legend813a
      @Legend813a  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but I just wanted to show a simple design that uses common materials, patch cord, knife, wire and tape, that will most probably work in any situation.

      @@Legend813a it would give something better, in some cases, the stock receive antenna, but most likely because of placement. If you figured out the receive frequencies and built something like a full wave loop antenna for that particular range of frequencies it would be far superior in performance. For a full wave loop would be 1005/frequency in Mhz, so at 162 Mhz would be about 6.2 feet loop. Then you need a matching piece of coax to match the input to the radio, can use a simple online calculator.

    Geez, I can’t understand WHY people insist on making videos, “Focus” when they literally don’t have the proper tools to do the job to start with, “Focus”
    This guy here reminds me of a Kindergartner making a TH-cam video with detail instructions on finger painting, “Focus”
    Hell if he can’t focus long enough to record a 14 minute video, they need to get him on some Adderol immediately… “Focus” 😂😂😂

    Questions.....Can people use a wire stripper/cutter rather than a knife? Does yelling focus....over and over...actually focus a camera? Why not just buy a new antenna for $4.99 and not go through this chaos and have a wire in your window? Can you trim this video down to 5 minutes?

      1. No, to use wire stripper requires intelligence level you don’t possess.
      2. In the case of this video, yes. Saying focus does focus the camera.
      3. The cost to do this could be $0 if you have some old rca cables lying around.
