An urban legend that exploits our fears of an obstructed gaze and the deeply unsettling idea that the youngest of our species are out to destroy us, the lore of Black-Eyed Children, or Black-Eyed Kids, is a modern construction. Powered by the ever-broadening influence of the Internet, B.E.K stories began circulating in the final years of the 20th century, but the “evil spawn” child archetype of the horror genre and hundreds of years of social expectations of childhood inform these unsettling monsters. Find out how the Black-Eyed children challenge biological impulses and cultural expectations-and learn why you should never blindly open a door to a stranger, even a small one. #blackeyedchildren #urbanlegend #MonstrumPBS
Written and Hosted by: Dr. Emily Zarka
    Director: David Schulte
    Executive Producer: Amanda Fox
    Producer: Stephanie Noone
    Illustrator: Samuel Allen
    Editor: Nicole Kopren
Produced by Spotzen for PBS Digital Studios.
The world is full of monsters, myths, and legends and Monstrum isn’t afraid to take a closer look. The show, hosted by Emily Zarka, Ph.D., takes us on a journey to discover a new monster in each new episode. Monstrum looks at humans' unique drive to create and shape monster mythology through oral storytelling, literature, and film and digs deep into the history of those mythologies.

I'd also add that kids can be creepy because they haven't fully internalized cultural norms around appropriate behavior, including some level of self-awareness and empathy. Anyone who's woken up to their kid staring quietly at them for who knows how long can attest to this. Innocence, in this sense, is creepy.

We have a legend similar to this in my country. Roughly translated to "neighbourhood kids", their unnaturally dark skinned and don't talk at all. My great grandma used to tell me that a boy like this used to visit her childhood home. And her mom used to cook meals for him, and he would just eat and leave without saying a word. They are usually harmless and not malevolent at all. But if you try to follow them, you'll never be able to catch them. Next thing you know, the child disappears and your lost. They can't talk to humans so they use sign language. I heard one of them used to live in my childhood home And it honestly freaked me out, but I never encountered it. They are not spirits, ghosts or demons. No one knows what they are but apparently they exist according to legend.

No. Evil entries have been around since the beginning of time. They have shown themselves to early peoples; they knew them and what they were capable of. They feared and even worshiped them. Take for example: Sasquatch, the giants, or the little people of North America. The natives knew these beings. They knew that Big Foot was not friendly, they saw the giants, and possibly knew where they were buried. As for the little people, they saw frequently and warned their children of them. No popular literature made these creatures up. They simply are, and humans have encountered them over the centuries.

Reading about these reminds me of an experience I had about 10 years back. No idea if it was a black eyed kid I didn’t look, but the intense fear that people report I had. It was Winter and dark I was walking my dog so wouldn’t have expected any kids to be out on street. It was on a road with houses and cars passing. Not busy but not a dead end. I was walking and noticed some kids running about in front and then all but one ran off. I instantly had a feeling that this was a trap and if I took notice of the one I would be in danger I carried on walking past and the girl calls for help and for me to go back. I can not explain this or how I felt but something was telling me for my own safety I could not go back. As I said this was a public road with houses on so if a kid had needed help there are plenty of people that would have been aware and there was on reports of anything happening that night.

The thing is here... this could actually be based, at least originally, on something that really happened. Just thinking back to my teenage years in the late 90s and this is exactly the kind of prank I could see myself or my friends pulling on unsuspecting adults with just some minimal acting and blackout contact lenses (which weren't hard to get) I wouldn't be surprised if this one turned out to be "real" in that sense, and then evolved into something more as the idea got stuck in people's heads.

Child homelessness probably has a lot to do with it. Confronted with a homeless child the witnesses might feel an obligation to help but also a fear of putting themselves at risk by helping, and their cognitive dissonance leads them to demonize the children to help justify their decision not to help.

Most often they hide their eyes and act helpless to the point where the unease the cause is overshadowed. from there various unusual and just straight weird things can happen but what really gets me is no one ever seems to be harmed. I completely agree... Can anything or anyone really be “evil” if the circumstances that created them never gave them an option to be anything else, or even the opportunity to Know What That would Look Like? Even when “Child Monsters” in fiction turn out to be Truly Dangerous, I always feel bad holding that against them, the same way I would feel bad holding it against a predatory animal or a purpose-built machine... and even if they “chose” to be like this, could they really have understood what that actually MEANT? I think that would at least have to be DETERMINED before I could bring myself to cast any judgment on a child, monstrous or otherwise? 🤔
In a good scary story, it’s my personal opinion that a “Child Monster’s” *Genuine Innocence* ought to be the SOURCE of the Scary, not in opposition to it, and the Scariest Part comes from us having to wrestle with that, I think. Having to question if we, or others like us, are responsible for creating a situation where such innocence could be weaponized; what our responsibility in clearing up the potential problem here is; what, as @Mel eloquently puts it, the greater IMPLICATIONS of this situation are? It’s everything you CAN’T determine, which hits REALLY CLOSE TO HOME, that fills us with fear.
I’m not sure they’re real... but if they were? I hope I’d have the presence of mind to try and overcome my fear? To try and reach out to them, and understand what makes them tick, even if not by exposing myself to potential danger? Maybe there could even be a way back out for them, if they really are Trapped in some weird horrible situation! I hope so, at least... too many Real kids go through Hell in normal life as it is, I would hope that there would be a way to keep the supernatural from compounding the problem further 😞

I always thought the most eerie part of this particular myth, is how partial it is.
Most monster stories seem to provide at least some parts of a full story. "This is a ghost of an unmarried woman. She preys on men and forces them to dance until they die of exhaustion", "This is a fairy who screams at night. If you hear her, either you or someone close to you will die soon". Or even "This is a scary creature that appears around here and doesn't like cars".
This legend has no answers whatsoever. What are they? Why are they like this? What do they want? What can they do? The "encounters" stories usually leave every single question open.

Never thought of that that's interesting! Becauee some people say when they encounter the children they have this strange almost trance like intrinsic desire to help them I.e open a door, whether it's car, house etc. So that's interesting that maybe they take that emotion or sense of duty for folks to help children and manipulate it to be even more potent and bring it out of them

    • @onijester56

Most creepypasta are in fact modern urban legends. "Lost Episode" forms, such as 'SuicideMouse.AVI' or the 'haunted game' genre ("Ben Drowned, Sonic.EXE, etc) link strongly to pre-internet "Lost Media" hunts. TH-camr BlameItOnJorge literally examines real-life lost-episode/"found episode" cases...some of which can give SuicideMouse a run for its money.
The SPC collection are all various items and entities from folklore or have strong pre-internet connections to urban legends. Slenderman and Siren Head may have creepypasta surrounding them, but are notably cryptids...not unlike the Wendigo or other malevolent humanoid beasts at the heart of many old-school myths.

      There's three types of creepypastas:
True creepypastas are spooky and we enjoy them because they're free, easy to access, and short(copypaste-eable)
Crappypastas are only really enjoyable to all those "i'm 14 and this is deep" goff gurlz simping for Jeff. And dumb boys who think that a sonic plushie appearing out of nowhere counts as something scary. And to bronies.
The third type are the ones where a hyper-realistic spoopy spary speleton pops out and leaves you wondering "than hoo wuz phone?". These are enjoyable for the so-bad-it's-good factor.

These things could very much be real. I never saw them in real life, but I did see them often in my out of body dreams. I saw them in the 90's as well.
My craziest experience was in a dream where I actually said yes, and I felt the whole left side of my body (i had reached out my left hand to it) freeze. I felt as if I was paralysed and something was taking over my body. I started chanting to any God or angel that would hear me and finally I felt it go out and i regained control. What I saw was a teenager no older than 15 or 16 and his eyes were fully black. He looked and said why wont you let me lay with you? I told it to get the f out and it drifted past my wall and out into the street....
My theory is that they are inter-dimensional beings. At first they came in dreams trying to take over bodies or possess people but around 1998 when they started appearing to actual people in the street in this reality they had taken over children's bodies. Maybe they were easier to possess?
I know i sound like a lunatic but all of this is completely true. Like I said, i never saw them in real life but they always had those pure black eyes with no whites and tried to suck my energy or take over my body in my dreams. I knew about them before I ever heard of this on the internet so when I finally found this "urban legend" I freaked out. I couldn't believe that others had seen them and much less in real life.
Im not schizophrenic, nor do I see visions of anything. Im pretty skeptical, but this story, about these things, I believe are very much true. I cant explain it beyond my theory and I don't know if these people are telling the truth, but if they are then there are things that do exist beyond this reality.

@@maximesaindon3552 i have extensive knowledge and experience with out of body and sleep paralysis. These were DREAMS. Not real. Not sleep paralysis. That’s why larger predatory sharks are so creepy is because their eyes have evolved as purely pupils for the low light and and very blurry aquatic environments they live in. Eyes that are just black orbs creep us out. Just like how “humans are hardwired to react to things that scuttle,”as stated by a douchey genius from a popular Epic Games franchise we are also hardwired to examine others through their eyes. If no color is visible or even hint of a soul per se we become horrifyingly unnerved
