  • Lets make a Traditional Longbow.
    Make a longbow like this and your journey into archery will be so much richer.
    Shooting a bow is one thing, but to make it and then shoot it is the perfect ending to any day.
    During this video I will show you exactly how to do it.
    If you need to get some wood like what I used during the video here is the place I get it from. exotichardwood...
    or book on a course with me at www.will-lord.co.uk

    My friend makes bows, he uses axes, and all kinds of wood, my favorite is his native American Osage orange bows, he knows the lbs of pressure of pull back just by feeling the wood before he strings them up, and can hit bottle caps 50 foot away with them.

    A few years ago we had a big yew tree fall in one of our sheep fields, so I had a go at making a long bow for myself I spent around 2 months carefully cutting and carving this lovely piece of yew I used the scraping method with a sharp blade and made a really nice long bow, I was so happy with myself if looked amazing, I even made the bow string same as you did, but when I was putting the string on my bow the bottom end snapped, I was so so gutted 😭😭

      @WillLordPrehistoricSurvival  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bugger that sucks but I’m pleased to tell you that you picked one of the best but often one of the trickiest and hardest wons to master first, and snapping them often just goes with the territory don’t let anyone tell you different

    Thanks, Will!!! I couldn't pull myself away from watching this! I watched the other one as well where you made the Longbow out of more traditional materials and methods... So, I'm wondering why is Yew so hard to find now? Don't get me wrong, the laminate was beautiful and seemed to imitate the efficacious nature of Yew as you explained it. But having a Yew longbow would be awesome - I didn't catch why Yew was getting so hard to find. Thanks! Super vid (as usual!)

    • @WillLordPrehistoricSurvival
      @WillLordPrehistoricSurvival  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Basically yew is not a popular choice for timber growers because it grows so slowly so generally it’s used on large estates for its hedging or architectural purposes also planted in church yards but generally protected so the conditions needed for bow making are seldom met, it also has a historical significance as we ran out of yew during the battle of agincourt and was brought in from Italy as a form of tax hence it’s Latin name Tax

    Nice bow.
    Just curious, when finishing the loop for the bowstring, how did you tie off the extra cordage? Is it just held on by friction through the cordage process, or do you retie it every once in a while as it comes undone, or is there a specific knot or technique to keep it in place?
