One easy grazing option is use a rope to tie the cow to a tree and they graze all around that tree. No extra fencing. A different tree every day. We used to braid nine-strands of hay bale binder twine saved from feeding hay, into ropes. Today I'd build a rope making jig (see youtube), but braiding is easy, three strands in each braid, tie in new lengths as you run out with square knots. Look at grazing/stocking units for how much of a field you have back there. Greg Judy youtube channel has a lot to say and a lot of hints for cattle grazing so the cow doesn't chew it down to nubs. Try to borrow a small brush hog and tractor to run around out there after you get the fences down and knock down any weeds so new grass can come up this spring.
This is such a marvelous development for you. I've seen a lot of homesteaders who keep their cow in one part of the pasture, move the cow out and the chickens in a few days later to break up and eat the worms/maggots in the cow poop, and increase the fertility of that area for growing even more potential crops! I'm excited to see what's next for you, Mr. and Mrs. H 😊
Congratulations on your advancement with your homestead. I have been watching your since you guys purchased the property and I have learned a lot from you. Thank you so much. Stay blessed and prosperous. Amen
Get some power poles that have been taken down for your poles. They make an awesome pole barn and are cheaper, sometimes you find free ones. Just a thought
How exciting! I don't know if you ever watch Homesteading with the Zimmerman's channel. Ruthann has dairy cows among other animals. It's pretty amazing to see all she makes with the milk from her cows.
Mrs. H. Thank you so much for thinking of your cow. It breaks my heart frustrates me and even makes me mad sometimes when I drive by here in Tennessee and see these poor cows standing out in the middle of a field covered in snow shivering you know they’re cold thank you for considering that cow and any further baby she might have. I’m happy for you guys. Good luck with everything. I know you can handle it and thank you for loving your babies.
Hello Mrs H,so happy for you guys getting a Jersey.I always wanted one too.We have 2 horses. With large animals, it's a constant fence repair.Just part of life now.😊I wouldn't trade them for the world.Have a beautiful day.
Congratulations family! I know you will do great taking care of your knew addiction. You should contact Humble Servants Homestead Channel because they have a cow and I am sure they would be able to provide you with excellent information about caring for your cow And they live in Georgia..
I just love watching all you do, and this new adventure is going to be the best yet. You keep doing and I will keep watching. Hey I have canned several of your recipes. The potato and green bean were one we love so much. Don't know why I never thought of that.
I researched 2 years on chicken care before getting chickens for first time and I am sooooo glad I did! So I understand you prepping for a Jersy 😊 congratulations on expanding ❤ wish I could but don't have the space and I'm getting too old to start huge projects
Have you thot about the mini cows? My friend has a little herd of them and loves it for her smaller homestead. She has one bull and three cows. They give more milk than her family of four can drink, so she also does the yogurt, cheese, etc as well. Check into them.
Congratulations Mrs Homestead Heart! I remember a couple years ago you saying that you really wanted a Jersey cow. I can't even imagine... I'm still trying to wrap my head around trying to get and take care of chickens. WOW!!!!👏👏👏
Get a Dexter and you'll have good milk, butter and cream plus they never have a problem calving or milk fever. Another plus is the babies grow off to be good beef if you want to go the route, they are much easier to keep weight on while in milk. Bless you in the journey of a dairy milkmaid 😊
Congrats on cow!! Wanted to share, please read about what cows can graze on safely - can’t graze them on alfalfa bc they can bloat easy. Would highly recommend True Grit Appalachian Ways & also Homesteading Family channels
Iam so happy for you Miss. H. Its going to so exciting to be adding another farm animal to the homestead. We also eat a lot of dairy products too. Such a sweet name marabelle. Then maybe later on add a anabelle 😅❤ shel'll need a counterpart.
DEXTER COW! Not sure if you have looked into the Dexter, but it looks similar to the Jersey, just a smaller size. Still A2/A2 milk, just less (about 1 gallon a day)
Oh, how exciting for you! A lot of labor full of love. You two are up for it. I thought it very interesting the comment about mini cows. And good producers too. Very incouraging. Our homestead lives in my heart. I get such pleasure "living" in yours. Merry Christmas, Heart family. Marry Belle is perfect!
See how easy these babies have been. You can do your own meat birds too. Choose your rooster, and a couple broody hens. Separate them from the other birds, and give the ladies plebty of straw to lay in. When the hens are 😮sitting enough eggs, take the rooster out, and let the ladies do their thing. You dont need a bunch of fancy stuff. Just a couple of good broody hens.
Congratulations, I knew that you was getting a cow. I'm so happy for you. I will be missing Zeke making appearance in your videos every time he gets out. Lol! 🤣
Cool with the milk cow, but Please don't plant alfalfa... do orchard grass instead, it's what we fed our goats because alfalfa can cause really bad bloat in cows and goats when its green grass and kill them. My neighbor raises cattle and would not allow alfalfa anywhere near his cattle because of how bad it on them. I highly recommend Living Traditions Homestead she is soooo smart on milk cows so if you have questions, I'm sure she can answer them. Best of Luck, and Wish you all a very Merry Christmas...
Get intouch with Megan at true grit appalatian̈ ways..she is so good with her Jersey cow, shes in fabulous shape, may also be able to signpost you to something for sale on your timescale
1/2 acre is not enough.. you live in a 1 to 1 region, which means you have to have 1 grazing acre per head of cattle. Alfalfa.. so she's strictly dairy, and you do not intend to eat her, right??. Check your local livestock sale barns. Buying a local cow would be best, because she wont have to acclimate to the air, weather, or climate. Make sure you find out the feed blend she has already been on so you don't cause her to get bloat with a sudden change in diet. I agree she needs a shelter. We have shelters for all of our livestock.
I don't know much about cows but a friend saif you need to make sure they give a certain type milk. like A2 I think or A1. please research. because she said the one kind is not very good for you. Sorry I can't remember which is good.
I'm curious... Will you clean up and compost the cow Manure? Or, if the chicken pen is next to the cows, will you sometimes let them in to clean up and spread the Manure? Or something else I hadn't thought of?
glad that you prepare early, cow will be happy
That’s exciting. MaryBelle is such a sweet name. You’re smart for getting your infrastructure in before the animal comes.
When Maribell calves, I think "New Jersey" would be a cute name for her baby.
I am soooo happy for you and your future plans. You are so great with all your animals, your new jersey will be one lucky cow!

You can add to your homestead skills making: butter, yogurt, and cheese!

It sounds exciting for you, you'll do great. You've had goats so you know another about animals.

So excited for you. Definitely following your journey.
4x4 may not be enough compromise and go with 4x6 post.
Love all the plans!

A cow won't be happy alone. She needs company, if you don't want 2 cows maybe a feeder steer or heifer for the freezer.
I am so excited for you. Many blessings in 2025. 🙏😎🏝🏖
Get intouch with Megan at true grit appalatian̈ ways..she is so good with her Jersey cow, shes in fabulous shape, may also be able to signpost you to something for sale on your timescale
I love that channel too! She had several videos on her milk cows
Hi, I need a link to the seed store. Did you change it to look different? Cuz I can't find it...😢help
I’m looking for the seed shop also, can you send me the link please respond
I'm happy for your new changes. Can the cow keep giving milk without having babies? If so, you will be getting more cows for that reason.
Yes, where do I send you mime because I'm tired of them. We do not have enough room and they are too loud for our size farm.
1/2 acre is not enough.. you live in a 1 to 1 region, which means you have to have 1 grazing acre per head of cattle. Alfalfa.. so she's strictly dairy, and you do not intend to eat her, right??. I don't know much about cows but a friend saif you need to make sure they give a certain type milk. like A2 I think or A1. please research. because she said the one kind is not very good for you. Sorry I can't remember which is good.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🐂

I'm curious...
Will you clean up and compost the cow Manure?
Or, if the chicken pen is next to the cows, will you sometimes let them in to clean up and spread the Manure?
Or something else I hadn't thought of?
Appalachia Homestead with patera has lots of experience. She's very nice. Congratulations! With a cow you really won't need to go to the store!
Have you two changed your seed store domain/website? I wanted to purchase som seeds this weekend,…please HELP❕
