  • Ever harvested coins, even silver coins, from a deep crack in solid granet all the while racing against time as the tide is coming in fast and furious??? Whelp... if not, here is you chance to see what it is like. Please join me, Billy and Thor as we go metal detecting and then discover a giant crack in the granite rock that once served as an accessway to the wild and rough tidal open ocean water and where apparently many things were lost or thrown away, including silver coins!
If you ever journey up to Down East Maine and get the chance, check out Billy and his Real Estate business. He can be found at www.BoldCoastPropertiesllc.com. He will hook you up too!

So, I did some e-digging, and those grates and buttons are a type of battery plate. Here's a small list of what I've collected:
    1. That plate design is called the "Manchester Positive". It is the positive electrode in this style of battery.
    2. The grid is a lead antimony alloy, and the "buttons" are rolls of pure lead. The rolls form a build-up of lead-peroxide. The grate does not, because the antimony protects the it. This keeps the grate from deteriorating.
    3. The positive and negative plates were separated with wood inserts. At one point, these battery cells were housed in open glass jars.
    4. They were used for various things, including cars.
One source of several I found is a book from 1923, by Charles W. T. Stuart, called "Car Lighting by Electricity".
It's on Google Books for free if you want to look, and there are several other good reads on the topic as well.

I'm honestly a little mindblown that there's copper there. Just south og there-- mid-coast, the water totally eats copper. The 'coins' and spoon bits I've found were just like lace. Brass holds up better, it seems. Amazing treasure hunt!
