    Insane to win a State championship at 160 as a Freshman much less in Iowa. I honestly don't remember seeing a single Freshman qualifier my Junior or Senior year at 160 and 171 (NC) and if there were any above 145 it was rare and they weren't stand out. Great content btw.

    • @Ronald-qs1pn
      @Ronald-qs1pn ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I wrestled as late as 2016 in Iowa. Young guys win state at 106-138. It is very impressive what Ben did at his weight

    • @ws8061
      @ws8061 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Ronald-qs1pn yeah I think winning States as a Freshman from 145-171 is probably more impressive than in any other weight classes. It's just that sweet spot where Guy's are big and strong but still really technical too and 99.99% of underclassmen that size just don't have a chance. So impressive.

    • @samclements3594
      @samclements3594 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      complete novice here, why is it more impressive at a certain weight more than the others?

    • @shar9883
      @shar9883 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@samclements3594 At low weights the field is generally younger so if you win as a freshman you are often winning against other underclassmen. To win at a higher weight class as a freshman he has to beat out other bigger guys that are typically older. So when he won state as a freshman he was probably wrestling against juniors and seniors

It will be interesting to see how it plays out for him but he's got the size, frame, and athleticism for football and there's no better work ethic in sports than a wrestler so I don't see why it wouldn't work if he can stay injury free on the ball field.

    I'm seeing a lot of show boating winners, and temper tantrum loses from many Wrestlers out there. In the 1980s we still shook hands were polite about our excitement or humility. Ben shows this on the mat. I can see the disappointment in his eyes when he wins and his opponent slaps his hand and walks away. Someone, a very good person, taught this young man some morals. We could use a million more like him in this country.

We played in the same high school baseball system at City High (who's head coach is Dan Gable's son inlaw lol) I never played on the same team as him but last year, I was on his brother's team. He could do pretty much everything except for pitch because of his tremendous athleticism. And despite that, he was always good natured and cheerful. Unrelated story, I actually went to Roosevelt with John Meeks and had a single class with him my sophomore year (he was a senior at the time). I remember talking to him and asking about wrestling and he told me a story of when where he was at a mental low point in his career. He had a close wrestling friend from SouthEast Polk High School (can't remember his name for the life of me) who went undefeated his freshman - junior year. During his friend's senior year, John told me that there was a controversial call made by the ref who was judging his friend's match. It ended up as a loss and was the only match his friend didn't win during his high school career. John told me that his friend not being there with him in their 4 time state champ/undefeated journey really messed with him mentally.
    But, John ended up going undefeated and became a legendary 4 time champion, so he was obviously able to power through it.
    Great video. I recognized SO much. Being an Iowan native myself. Especially Jordan Creek Mall. I'd recognize that place ANY day of the week. Lol

    You forgot a handful of 4 timers in the 80's after Jeff Kerber. Scott Morningstar, NCAA champ Joe Gibbons, Greg Randall who were all standouts. He has 4-5 years in college to prove he is up there with the greats. There were 3 timers and others who were 3 time NCAA champs like Jim Zalesky and Barry Davis from CR Prairie and the Brands brothers with Olympic medals. Don't put him on a list with the all time greats until he reaches those heights.
