Well done to the Auckland Zoo for doing the right thing to get her back to being with other elephants. It is hard letting go, but as elephants are social creatures, she deserves this. It is a shame we couldn't have a herd here in NZ.
They are such amazing intelligent herd animals, you have been her herd and it is so very good of you to understand that she needs a herd of other elephants to become her total and true self.
Auckland Zoo staff well done your love and devotion to Burma is shown in her health and demeanour. Very proud of you all it's hard for ye but it's delightful for Burma. You guys should be ambassadors for elephants throughout the world. Thanku guys love you ❤❤❤
What a sweet Ellie, hoping our Perth girls will be joining her very soon to start the process of an integrated herd. Good luck, it is the right thing to bring them together at Monarto, the facilities are looking great. They will all enjoy the rangeland and dams / waterholes provided in summer, nothing better than a nice soak on a hot day.
Thank you to the team at Auckland Zoo whom managed and cared for Burma. And to her keepers that still do we paid a visit just to see Burma prior to her departure. We had tears of sadness and joy that she was leaving but will be with companions of her own kind. Hugs to the staff here in Auckland and thank you to Adelaide to put this amazing program together.💚
Thank you so much for this update. It is very good of the team at Auckland Zoo to organise this move for Burma, as well as making Burma feel safe and comfortable throughout her journey across the ditch. Wishing that she enjoys her new home ❤
Its been an absolute joy having Burma our last (but not least) elephant in New Zealand. I'm happy our neighbour Australia will be taking her. She's been so much joy to everyone and throughout my childhood too. She'll be sorely missed but we're happy for her ^u^
Im here in Melbourne so having Burma become a beloved Aussie is wonderful in every way - so why am I crying with everyone else ….love to the keepers too 💕
Makes me cry every time I watch this. Such a difficult decision but the best one for Burma. I'm going to miss seeing elephants at the zoo, but fully understand why. Big hugs to Andrew and the team, it must be so bitter sweet for them. And extra big hugs for Burma - I hope she makes good friends with the other elephants and has a happy rest of her life.
Bittersweet ❤️😥 It's really sad to see beautiful, sweet Burma leave us, however it's for HER best interests. Elephants need elephants - they need to be part of a herd to be happy & fulfilled. I'm grateful to Auckland Zoo for doing such a great job in preparing Burma for this big, life-changing transition. I'm sure she will thrive in her new environment with her new family/herd. Looking forward to updates! Best wishes Burma! xxx🥰🙏❤️🐘
Welcome to Australia Burma. Here's hoping that your new home at Monarto Safari Park can deliver the same high level of provident care and commitment bestowed upon you, by our Kiwi brothers and sisters, at Auckland Zoo. Wishing you a long life.
So happy Burma has had a safe trip to Australia. I look forward to getting updates on how she is doing. Her new home and herd to be sounds awesome ❤Sad for New Zealand, but happy for Burma❤
i have loved your videos of Burma and Anjalee. it is a shame they could not stay in Nz but i hope they are well and happy. Thank you for all the hard work you have done in enriching their lives.
People lined the streets of Adelaide and the overhead bridges on the South-Eastern Freeway to watch Burma pass by on her way to Monarto Safari Park. She is going to an amazing new Elephant area in the Park and will soon be amongst other elephant friends
Burma was so loved that Auckland Zoo was able to let her go….she needs to be with other elephants😊. Great decision as painful as it is for her longtime human friends and carers. Australia will take good care of her❤
Just like an elephant, all of Aotearoa, New Zealand will never forget Burma! Awesome mahi Auckland zoo, its great to see Burma get the elephant family she's always deserved, hopefully she does well at Monarto. 💜🐘
Fabulous video and story. Such dedication on the part of the keepers and commitment to conservation of Asian elephants. I'm in Adelaide and will look forward to seeing the five elephants when they are all here at Monarto.
As though we need another excuse to travel to Australia. Didn't realise how vast Monarto is - what a great group of enclosures for the eles when they all come together.
It is nice to see that more and more elephants are being released from zoos. It is regrettable though that elephant Burman has been living alone in Auckland Zoo for more than two years after her buddy Anjalee had moved to Sydney to be part of a breeding program. After Anjalee's departure, it was known that Burma would only be left behind so the question is why did she have to stand alone for two years. But it is good and healthy for her that she now ends up with animals of her own kind and that the move went well. It is also nice to hear that Auckland Zoo is working on elephant conservation in Sri Lanka. I adopted two elephants in Sri Lanka. Thank you, Auckland Zoo, for letting this elephant go. Let us hope that elephant Anjalee and her new herd will be set free as well in the near future. ❤🐘🙏
Kia ora Stephanie, unfortunately there were unforeseen set backs to our initial plans for Burma's move to another zoo in Australia, which you can read about here - facebook.com/share/p/1ArLa63x8j/.
I'm not sure how Auckland zoo popped up in my recommendeds, but I'm here for it 😊. How very emotional for you all and beautiful Burma 🥺. I hope her new herd is accepting of her 🤞. Will there be a follow up? I'm Tasmanian so now I'm off to watch the Tassie devil video 😃👌🇦🇺
Burma seems like a wonderful elephant. It must be very hard for the Auckland zoo and all her fans to say goodbye to her. It is so good that she will have more freedom and be able to live with other elephants at her new home Monarto Safari Park.
It is extremely evident how much Beautiful Dame Burma is deeply treasured and loved by her keepers at Auckland Zoo as well as all the visitors who love her (I’m in the states & have never met this amazing lady & she’s captured my heart from afar)I so appreciate the fact that even though without a doubt she’ll be missed by you guys & it’s incredibly hard to let her go,your team has always kept her best interest as the top priority while she’s been there & moving her to the safari park is further evidence that her wellbeing comes first even as she takes pieces of your hearts with her on her journey. I am so grateful for your teams true commitment to not just Burma but all the animals you look after,it’ll be wonderful to see her get to form new bonds with other elephants after such a long time family, weather it’s other elephants or their humans,is everything to these wonderful gentle giants. I was definitely tearing up watching Andrew fight back tears he clearly loves his favorite girl so much & even though this is the best opportunity for Burma that doesn’t mean it’s easy & more than a little heartbreaking thank you for giving this Queen the very best of everything over the decades she’s spent at the zoo sending big hugs to all of you.🐘🩷☀️🤗🥹🌻
Such a beautiful story. Im in the Adelaide hills and many people avoided her route to Monarto on her move day as you requested :D Such an honor to have her and she will be so loved here as well. How do you know if she will get along with her new herd? Do you have to chose particular personalities/sexes/ages etc? What goes into deciding who her new elephant family will be?
Kia ora Lisa, thank you! You can read more about the Asian elephants that will be joining Burma soon at Monarto Safari Park including their ages/sexes and a bit about their personalities - www.monartosafari.com.au/elephants-at-monarto/. :)
Looking forward to seeing her with her own herd, but the zoo will be different with no elephants. My first memories predate Burma, riding on an elephant in the mid 60s, a magical memory.
Monarto Safari Park is about an hour out of Adelaide. It’s the largest safari park outside of Africa. Burma will be very happy there. She will have several acres to roam free and will be getting other elephants for company from Western Australia. She is still in quarantine but has settled in well.
A real jumbo jet!! How sad that there wasn't enough space in NZ to do something similar and bring elephants to her. There are so many elephants that need rescuing. Well done for looking after her and her best interests to the zoo team though, it must be so sad to say goodbye.
Literally losing an OG from this Generation💔. I’ve kinda wondered, why Burma couldn’t go to where Anjalee was. Like, you can imagine Anjalee with the other Elephants curious about who the new elephant is, then she finds out it’s Burma, then they reunite. But I understand, that probably couldn’t really happen, cause moving an elephant costs a lot of money etc. But, maybe in another life🐘💙
Kia ora Michael, thank you for your message. Their respective homes were chosen to meet their different needs and ensure their best future health and wellbeing. We go into more detail about this decision in this video - th-cam.com/video/dsnbalGBPbk/w-d-xo.html. :)

It's wonderful that you are putting this lovely creature's welfare first, especially when Auckland staff love her so much
So heartwarming to see the love the Auckland zoo team very clearly have for Burma
Love that she will have a family of elephants. God bless you guys for putting her first ❤
It seems the very best outcome for a magnificent elephant who has had the most tender care from caring humans.
Tears of sadness for Burma's old friends, tears of joy for Burma and her forever home. She won't forget you.
Thank you from Adelaide ❤🇦🇺 We love Burma already 👍😄
They are such amazing intelligent herd animals, you have been her herd and it is so very good of you to understand that she needs a herd of other elephants to become her total and true self.

Beautiful animal. Dedicated staff, doing the right thing.
Well done ….she will be in good hands here in SA and soon to have new companions!
Even though it is hard for all the people who love her, thank you for doing the right thing for Burma.

What a brilliant team of people. I'm an aussie and we will definitely welcome you all with open arms. Best of luck.

She's magnificently beautiful. Boomer, perfect name for Oz.
Thank you for what you've done to make Burma's life enjoyable. Your hard work and dedication has been exceptional. I will miss Burma too ❤

Hi Im Australian but never heard of Monarto Zoo, where is it located...it looks amazing...hope all goes well with the move

Please take the absolute best care of her, she has been through so much. Kia kaha Burma.
Please post updates.

Poor Burma she must have been stressed through this process. I hope she has settled into her new home
Looks like a sri lankan elephant. Nice.

Why is she moving to another Country?

So sad to see the last of Aucklands zoos elephants depart the zoo after 30+years 😢😢
Why does it say the elephant is moving to Australia? It is obvious that it is New Zealand
Kia ora, Asian elephant Burma moved from Auckland Zoo in New Zealand to Monarto Safari Park in Australia (which is what is shown in the video). :)
@aucklandzoo Thanks, I might not have watched it long enough for that to become apparent. So many times the titles have nothing to do with the video.
