Sorry to disagree with you, it's a decent enough version don't get me wrong but it's far from the best version. He cuts several notes off and rushes upto the big finale to gather his breath, Pavarotti made it look and sound effortless sung in a higher timbre and held the power notes for longer and in my opinion his version remains the benchmark.
And Luciano was singing those "benchmark" versions between the ages of 45 and 55. Wait till Calleja gets to that age. If you were in your early 30's and headlining Last Night of the Proms you would be nervous too...
Joseph is in his early 30's?...I thought he was a lot older then that, more like early 40's.

I agree with you, Mr. Smart. And your knowledge of Classical music - Bell canto- are higher of mine, sure. But let me say you. Music is anything alive. So, we must give thanks God because new players, singers are increasing the list of names. Probably, we'll need many years until appears another Mr. Pavarotti. But, while, I think we, all, must respect for all those concert performers and singers. Because life is very sad in very locations in the world or seeing it through a computer screen. All who can enjoy of Classical music or Bell Canto performance in life will be supporting to those musicians.

Fantastic rendition
I had the privilege of seeing this man sing Polione at the Met in October 2017. His sound reminds me of Bjoerling and so does his musicianship. He is a fine artist and a friendly, kind hearted man who talked with me after Norma at the Met. One of the finest tenors around today.

I was lucky to hear his voice for the first time, when I was Germany in 2013 and was immediately enthralled; it may not have the volume of Pavarotti, but I'd give anything the have been able to sing like that, when I did.
Beautifully sung; probably technically perfect and sung with such ease. In time he may be as good as the great Pavarotti.

I was lucky to be at the 2012 Last Night "promming" some 15 ft away, so witnessed this performance live. Believe me he can sing, and more than that he has charisma and charm. He's not Pavarotti; he's Joseph Calleja. He can never be anything else., which is just how it should be. As for those lecturing types with opinions on purity and credibility, as far as I know, Calleja never had to duet with Simon Le Bon, as the Big man did. Celebrate difference, not bitterness
Beautiful ringing voice full of body and decent brightness. I wish he would present with longer breath, but beautiful voice. Really reminiscent of the past tenors like Bjorling and Gedda.

He does sing well, I have to agree. There are no idiots here, but Pavarotti he certainly is not. The person here (Mathew Galea) who said "go see Pavarotti" doesn't seem to know that Luciano is dead. Pavarotti received a platinum disc for this when he took the aria to number 2 in the UK pop charts. That has never been done before or since.

I wonder why he's singing this song. From his rep list, the heaviest he's gone is Rodolfo in La Boheme and he sings lots of Bellini and some Rossini. Probs the popularity factor

Calef is written for a drammatico tenor voice, like that of Corelli or del Monaco. This is just another example of a soft leggero voice attempting to sing this aira benefitting from sound amplification.

I first heard Josef Calleja singing this, thanks to TH-cam, in 2012. It was definitely one of the all-time great performances of Nessun Dorma and I was instantly a fan. Three or four years later, I was sitting on a bench in the English Garden in Munich and an unshaven character in a track suit came ambling past. I didn't think much about it until he was about fifty yards past, when I suddenly thought I know that face. It was too late to go running after him but I sent him a message on Twitter the following evening, explaining that if I had caught up with him, I would have told him what a fine singer he was. He re-tweeted my message in what must have been the interval of his performance at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
Good, but not great- too much vibrato- try to clean it up! That's not to say he's not brilliant, he is but needs more control and lengthen some notes to clean up.
Caruso actually had a simlarly fast vibrato and no one accuses HIM of having too much. The issue is that Calleja is a lyric tenor trying to sing spinto. The only lyric tenor I've heard who could sing heavier repertoire passably was Pavarotti.
No one performs Nessun Dorma like Pavarotti, the 8/9 seconds final high note..Calleja's performance is outstanding.

Bjorling and Corelli sing the best Nessun Dorma.
For me , it was so so. Nothing special . Audience are over reacting
wow, his tongue is really well placed and relaxed as opposed to so many other operatic singers with retracted or shaking tongues.

To those who kind of think that this is not much compared to Pavarotti and the like, you really had to see it live at the Last Night of the Proms. There and then, it was BRILLIANT.
I was told that the lyrics of opera were usually simplistic even trite, it was the power of the singer and orchestra that made them so memorable, this video with lyrics proves that correct. loved it anyway.

Joseph Calleja is one of the leading and most accomplished tenors of our time. I don't particularly care for this interpretation of Nessun Dorma because it is somewhat too affrettando for my tastes and I don't believe Puccini intended it as such; nonetheless, comparing it to recordings done by other artists is pointless.
