Few people know that Kokanee were once widely stocked across the eastern United States. For a time Kokanee fisheries thrived in states like New York, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and in several other eastern states. However, most of those Kokanee programs failed or collapsed over time due to invasive species or abandonment of Kokanee stocking. However, Connecticut has maintained its Kokanee fisheries since the 1940’s and they still persist to this day using local broodstock. Kokanee can be found in West Hill Pond in central Connecticut and at East Twin Lakes in the northwest corner of the lake. I fished West Hill Pond as the final stop on the Kokanee Across America project.

I noticed that the last fish you caught in Connecticut is the same spot I catch my first fish almost every time I go out. When I see you fishing west hill it really makes me feel connected with your channel..thanks for fishing my state.

I’m so so happy you made your way to Connecticut! I live in CT and have asked so many fishermen how to approach Kokanee fishing here with no luck. I’ve been watching your videos for a couple years now and wondered how well your tactics transferred here. Glad to see they do! Can’t wait to try some things out!

Thanks for sharing the video!! I didn’t realize that West Hill Pond had Kokanee but my journey completely changed when I stumbled upon Weston A Prices’s book: Nutrition and Physical Degeneration and it saved my life in knowing what to eat for foods. It is the most influential, inspirational, informative read of my entire life. I could live anywhere in this world and hunt, trap, fish. It was a former Harvard Anthropology course book and it should be taught in all schools and colleges throughout the world. Anyways I started into getting heavily into mackerel and started back in 2000. In 2004 began fermenting the fish using raw organic cow milk kefir being a 50/50 mixture. I’m going to post a video on how I do that. For the past 5 years understood oily saltwater fish like mackerel, herring, sardines, anchovies, wild caught salmon can postpone hypothermia and can save your life. I go in the Penobscot River in wintertime and the winter of 2020-21 only missed one week. I eat like 2 oz of my fish and drink the kefir because the omega 3 oils are drawn out and nothing goes to waste. I eat the skin, bones, head but you have to take the gills out when doing this. You can also just eat the fish freshly caught raw. This is the identical way people in Alaska, Northern Canada eat sea mammals to protect against the cold. I avoid canned fish but that doesn’t mean they will not help you.
I eat my oily fish and move around or exercise a little bit and then after 5-10-20 min go in the ice water. I feel warm and it’s easy to do a 5-12 min dip. Current strength is dangerous though and you need to be mindful of this. I talk about it in my video when I go in the river when ambient air temperature is -26 F .
Quick experiment I did was avoid eating oily fish for two weeks to purge my body and went into a horse trough with ice water in March of Maine. Well the litmus test was to open and close my hands to see how quick they would get numb and slow down when I opened and closed my hands. It took like 3-4 min. So the following day I ingested my oily mackerel/ kefir and was easily able to open and close my hands for 12 min. !! That is a massive difference in being able to postpone hypothermia.
I’m also acquainted with the Wim Hof Method too and that is invaluable too when you do not have insulating properties of oily fish or where legal sea mammal consumption is allowed. He has a app called WHM = Wim Hof Method.
Now reverting back to East Twin Lakes that is crazy the sizes of Kokanee salmon were commonly running 18-20” sounds amazing and it must’ve been. Yeah the introduction of the other species of fish corrupted the sizes. You know on the West Twin Lakes side the largemouth bass being caught commonly weighed 7 lbs. Tell that friend who fished there for 40 years I recall seeing on the West Lake Side by that white mansion a state record size bass. I bet it was 14-15 lbs. That fish is long gone now but that is not to say that location is poor.
I want to go up to Alaska and get the salmon roe for brain health. That is healthier than the flesh and skin but the oils are super healthy for blood circulation. I’m uncertain if it pertains to all species of salmon but they can carry worms when eaten raw.
I cold smoke mackerel using yellow birch wood and it tastes like ham and the fish flesh texture resembles cheese. Unbelievable in taste and texture.
I will probably go to Pulaski New York in the Salmon River and get salmon roe there.
Sharing is caring so this was why I put the extra information. I came down with hypothermia and tell of my story when I was 24 yo. I’m 53 years young now!!

I agree. I had a few folks tell me dodgers don't work on that lake or they only want one color on that lake but my experiences demonstrated otherwise. Overwhelmingly the same setups and colors often proved effective across all bodies of water.

I live in CT and started fishing West Hill regularly in 2015 for kokanee. From then until 2019 all of the mature fish were between 15”-19” with my biggest being 21.25”. The numbers were a lot lower so you really had to work for them. Since then it’s been loads of small fish like what you caught and after doing some research it seems like the average size varies a lot year by year here. Hopefully this year it changes. I have pics I would post but I’m not sure how. Love your channel by the way!

Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your videos you’re the best. Could you possibly touch on the different strains of Kokanee the late spawning shore spawners from north Idaho with the lighter meat vs the early spawners ie Deadwood res. where IDFG gets its eggs for hatchery stock? Seems like the darker the meat the better the flavor. You may have already touched on the subject and I missed it. Anyway thanks again and keep up the good work.

I just tried fishing this lake two weeks ago! Landed 1 trout no kokanee unfortunately. I tried using a downrigger on an inflatable but haven't found a good way to mount it yet. Caught the trout on a clip on wight per your suggestions in previous videos. Also struggled to go slow enough with my motor. I moved to CT from CA last fall, and have been missing west coast salmon and living vicariously through your videos. I hope to get dialed in on west hill kokanee! Maybe I'll have to try to target them through the ice.

No it was just really hot and the coolers were so small it melted quickly. I couldn't get my good catch bags on the airplane. I think for short duration it doesn't have an effect but don't let them sit in the slush all day.

2 quick questions: until I get a fish finder should I, as a rule, just start Kokanee fishing trips by aiming for the depth where the water is roughly 54 degrees and adjust from there by 10 feet increments till I find em? Also, is there another temp depth sensor that you would recommend that’s less expensive than the $180 Fishhawk?

All things being equal, what advantage does a downrigger have vs the Snap weight system, if they were both at the exact same depth if any advantage? Is the biggest advantage of a downrigger being able to target a certain depth more accurately? Cheers.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1
