      bare in mind that everyone is biased and everyone sees the situation from their perspective. Shawn Ray is biased to his own physique, he sees small, aesthetic bodybuilders as the pinnacle of bodybuilding. He sees his body type as dominant or superior to mass monsters, I mean he said it as much.
      The reality is different, aesthetics have never been more important than size and conditioning which are the 2 pillars of the sport. Take it back to the 60s and you'll see the trend that I'm talking about. From Oliva to Arnold to Haney, SIZE, STATURE, that's what kept winning and that didn't change after them either.
      Mr. Olympia, or any other bodybuilding show, is not a beach body competition. What the public thinks or fantasizes about is irrelevant, because the sport of bodybuilding has rules and a set judging criteria by which shows are judged. Shawn Ray was 210 pounds, frail, narrow and still not more conditioned than Yates or Coleman. According to what logic did he ever deserve to beat someone 50 pounds bigger and more conditioned than himself? You're gonna tell me Shawn Ray ever won the front lat spread against Yates? side tricep? back double? back lat spread? Please. If you think that then you are a legit casual that shouldn't be talking about bodybuilding. Shawn Ray has no business in winning any of the aforementioned poses, Yates was too big, too conditioned, too thick, too dense , too wide for Ray to ever do anything

      I never understood how Dorian won any Olympia, except 93. Otherwise, he never looked good to me, especially after he tore his biceps. How can a Mr Olympia have a torn biceps? His wholfe physique was a mess in 97.
      Shawn definitely won in 94 in my book. I got so sick of Dorian winning every year no matter what, I was so happy when he finally retired.
      I met him and talked to him at the 99 Arnold Classic. Introverted, but a nice guy.
      Sometimes Shawn talked a bit too much, but he was often correct. And he certainly was not the only guy who complained about placings during that era.

    The 1990s were the true Golden Era of pro bodybuilding. Never before and likely never again will we see so much Mr. Olympia caliber talent competing head to head. So many greats should have, could have, and would have been crowned Mr. O if only the field hadn't been so deep and genetically blessed. The biggest reason some of the greats were snuffed out wasn't politics, rather it was the amount of amazingly gifted competitors on stage. Only one could win; it's hard to argue against Yates and Coleman (although Yates was gifted the win over Nasser, torn biceps and all).

    And Shawn was totally right and still right, bodybuilding is and was judged on mass primarily.
    Putting mass as the most influential judging criteria is deeply unethical and has directly caused the death of many many young men, Dallas McCarver being one example. I still don't understand how it as been allowed to continue like this.

      size and conditioning have always been the 2 pillars of the sport, 70-60-50 years ago, the 90s or today. Obviously their importance has increased, but let's not act like Sergio, Arnold, Haney etc weren't winning primarily because of their size advantage over their competition.
      Also, size and conditioning are not subjective, which is one of the reasons why they are so important. You're either bigger and more conditioned than the next guy, or you're not. Shawn would like the judges to appreciate lines, aestheetics, posing etc MORE, but all of those things are subjective to each and every judge's preference hence mixed outcomes.

    • @Matstarx25
      @Matstarx25 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dj_m19 Mixed outcomes wins over pushing people to kill themselves, in my book. Al though i do understand your points, objective judging criterias are a backbone. Back in the day bodybuilders had far better conditioning than today's, also bubleguts were rare (maybe JPF and Dorian had some), most of them had great mid-sections.

    I always wondered why Paul Dillett never trained his neck? Being such a beast, it needed a little attention.

    Shawn Ray was right. Yet it took 20 years before everyone realized it. In 2016 the IFBB created Classic Physique because everyone was just getting too big, too bloated, and coming in poor condition.

    It’s a damn shame Charles Glass didn’t actually TRAIN Paul. Some proper free weight rowing and pullovers for his back instead of paying Charles to be a glorified rep counter would have done wonders for him. His back was actually not THAT bad in 1994… After the 94 Olympia though, it just got flatter and lost whatever density he had early on.
    The fact that by this stage he still refused to slow his rep tempo and was doing T bar rows so light he would look at himself in the mirror is just sad. Dude coasted on genetics and Primobolan the whole damn time.
    Rows and posing would have taken Paul at LEAST to 2nd at the O and a top 2-3 in any show he came within 100 miles of.

      poor mind muscle connection. I don't blame him, it's extremely hard to develop it in the back, you can see it in his posing, the man just couldn't contract his back muscles properly. Contrast that to anyone who's regarded as having a great back, they can contract each of their back muscles with ease and on command.

    • @dj_m19
      @dj_m19 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with poor mind muscle connection you're basically just swinging the weight from point A to point B hoping a tiny bit of it translates into bigger muscle tissue.
