    Brian of Brittany, one of Alan Rufus’s many brothers, was first Earl of Cornwall under William the Conqueror. Brian’s victory in the 1069 battle of the River Taw in Devon is described in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. He may have built Launceston Castle.
    When Brian left England, his lands were granted to Robert, Earl of Mortain.
    EA Freeman wrote that Brian joined the Hautevilles in Italy and led the Rearguard at Dyrrhachium in 1081. A feint similar to those at Hastings devastated the Varangian Guard and won the battle against the Eastern Roman Emperor.
    Brian held the fortified town of Kastoria until issues the Normans had in Italy cut their supply lines. He then surrendered Kastoria to the Emperor and returned home.
    In Brittany in 1084, Brian and Alan witnessed a charter by their eldest brother Geoffrey.

    Thing is, Geoffrey of Monmouth based Arthur’s family on that of the Anglo-Breton magnate Alan Rufus:
    Uther = Eudon (“Lord of Brittany” in the Song of Roland).
    Igraine = Orguen.
    Guinevere/Guanhara = Gunhildr, King Harold’s daughter.
    Hoel of Cornwall = Hoel of Cornouaille, Orguen’s brother.
    Ambrosius Aurelianus is presented by Geoffrey as “Aurelius Ambrosius”, Uther’s eldest brother who died of poison while suppressing a rebellion.
    Whereas Eudon’s eldest brother Duke Alan III of Brittany died of poison while suppressing a rebellion in Normandy.
    Alan Rufus visited Monmouth about the time the Priory was founded by the local Breton lord.

    It is evident that English Heritage were surprised by the backlash and are belatedly trying to justify their management of a site that, as is freely admitted, was a high status fort/settlement for the Brythonic celts in what is now Cornwall. Until English Heritage hand over control of sites like Tintagel to Cornish interests to use as they see fit, this will look and smell like cultural appropriation, despite the special pleading evident in this video. Admittedly later than this video - which is disappointingly hosted - the findings of a healthy pre-roman existence of life, and incredible trading of goods associated with wealth have been found. No doubt the old local myths and legends - yet again - are proving substance. I daresay that the ancient archaeological findings were also well known to the previous builders, and not only the post-Roman occupiers. It's a place - along with Cornwall, and the ascent of the Celtic tribes and nations, that holds immense fascination.
