  • Welcome to another Make Way With The Morleys video, we've made little by way of progress in sorting out our damp problem but hopefully should know more in the next few days. The Caravan is booked in to see an Elddis approved workshop for inspection.
One thing that was picked up on from our service was a broken light in the kitchen. So I take you through how I changed our kitchen light.

Hi Mr Morley... Love your videos mate.I class my self as an experienced caravaner. Don't rule out using caravan service centres with undercover work shops, who carry spares new and reconditioned from caravans they "break" these centres will do your service and damp repairs all in one visit . Mobile service engineers tend to give you a lovely list that advises what you need to sought out your self, this leaves you distraught and with the additional work of saucing a repairer to get the work done!
Always use an AWS garage who can do all the work under one roof.
Reference your circular ceiling lights, you can convert the existing lights by removing the halogen light under the cover and wiring a piece of led strip for pennies, it's easy to do, I've wired mine so they light up Blue!
Ps you can seal your caravan your self, by using a product called Sikaflex white 221. It's so easy...
You can buy your own damp test meter, a must so you don't have to worry about paying someone else to do it..Also I keep my van in a Barn so it doesn't get wet, and no one knows when we are away.!!
My email is muddymarvellous@gmail.com is you wish to ask me more..ps from your accent we live in close proximity!!! It's a small world.
Thanks for your videos..take care..ps all caravans have damp, including the brand new ones..!!!
    James

Hi James, thanks very much for your message. I always try my best to get back to comments asap so I must apologise for the delay - we've been away and phone/internet signal was terrible!
Well things have moved on somewhat since last week when I recorded this but more of that to come over the next few weeks no doubt. We've a damp tester but have been a bit tardy in checking ourselves for any issues. We know to do so now but I guess its an experience thing! I'll most definitely drop you an email - covered Barn sounds idyllic! Thanks for dropping by, Andy

LED lights tend to come in cold white or warm white options. I changed all the tubes in our Challenger to warm LEDs, it was well worth it and you can buy them from China for less than £1 a metre these days. In our previous caravan I converted halogen ceiling lights (in a similar style to yours) to LED by sticking in LED strips and wiring them up, that would have been much more cost effective. I think these are the sort of LEDs Dan used in this awning light video.

Hi Vince, I love LEDs, they’re so cheap and easy to work with - you can have a lot of fun with them. I’m not going to change all the lights just yet. If another goes I might have a play. Andy

Andy, I can't fault your method. You took the right precautions. I know you still have to cover your arse in this age of litigation. Another poster mentioned warm white LEDs which are good if you want a similar light to filament bulbs. I've already upgraded my 240v lights in the Lunar to LEDs (they're just the normal bulbs you have in the house with the same bayonet fitting) and I'd like to do the same with the 12v lights. I'd like to replace the fluorescent lights (all 5 of them!) with LED units. Hope you can get your damp problem fixed without too much trouble. I'm lucky that the Lunar had no damp, water ingress or any sponginess. The biggest job I've had to do on the Lunar was to replace the end clips on the flyscreens and blinds and they're now all working 100%.

Thanks very much. Converting some lights to LED sounds great, this could turn into a "project" van before I know it. Recently we experienced some electrical issues whilst on site - not in our van but whilst having a few drinks with friends and all electric went off, not caused by us but this did get me thinking about how useful having 12v awning lights really could be! Cheers, Andy

Nice little video, well explained too.
Not sure if it applies to caravans, but some leds do have a warmer light to them (tries and match the other warmer colours in the other lights).
    Keep up the good work

+RailAdvent cheers. I may well convert the others to LED but in any case I’m not that bothered by the differences. Thanks for your feedback 😃. Andy

We had a damp reading of 40% in some cupboards at a service. The next service it went down to 30%. The most recent service it was still at 30%. It is apparently an old repair (noted on the service record before we got the ‘van). We think it’s drying out, but we are keeping a close eye on it. Servicing every year gives us peace of mind. Be interested to hear how you get on.

+T 1 out & about cheers Michael. I’m not too worried and helps having some expert advice telling me so! A service is an absolute must in my opinion. Andy

We only plan to use the shower when we have to, so if we were offgrid etc. If it wasn't wet room and I had a fully serviced pitch of course I'd use every morning :)
      Enjoy the rally!

Dude, damp is just so dis heartening. We bought a private van like you but rushed in a bit and didn't get it checked. It had leaky window seals around the rear bunk windows. Happened just after we bought it. Made me depressed until we got it fixed, so worried. As for going off grid, we found that the car stereo in the van caused a drain on the battery. Next time we went I disconnected the stereo. Did buy some switches to cut the feed but sold it now and never fitted them.

+markheatrix hi Mark, yes I was a bit disheartened yesterday when I had a quote from a workshop but feeling much more chipper about things now.
Nothing will ever be water free forever. Seals go and mastic will suffer from degradation sooner or later. It’s just a problem, and most problems can be sorted out if caught in time.
Useful to know about the radio, I’ve heard tv aerial amplifier will also drain too. Thanks for watching. Andy

    Save £40.00
If you had used the old light which looks the same as the new, but fitted better. Strip out the heavy circuitry leaving only the 12v positive negative leads..If you cut off a piece of led strip say 7 inches in length. Solder the leads on to the strip..and stick the to the ceiling in the light..your done.
I've got mine wired to blue on the roof..but you can have white if you want.
    Save £40.00..

No worries, thanks tho. RE the flyscreen, DM me with what you're after as I've got a whole spare one from my MPK rooflight. Its the inner sliding blind and fly. You can have it for the cost of the postage if its the right thing?

It's the outer plastic, the bit you pull down to open the skylight (if that's the right term). A clip has broken off. It's not urgent, which is the worst kind off job - as I never get round to them! Thanks for the offer 👍
