Ah, back in my day when AM Radio was where you found Rock n Roll tunes playing ! I'm Playing Credence Clear Water, B52's, Devo. Thank you for the run down, good afternoon from the U.S.A
Good afternoon Phil , it's 40° over here in Western Australia so I'm sitting indoors , any sane person is , listening to Hawkwind's Days of the Underground ( another of your recommendations Phil ) and by jingo a totally classic set . Again great value and wonderful music . The video clip of the group doing Quark ,Strangeness & Charm on the Marc Bolan show was such a joy. I picked up the Hawkwind set as well as King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King . Another band that gives a huge bang for your buck. Another great recommendation . Thanks Phil.
I remember going to see Gillan at Friars Aylesbury and expecting the jazzier Ian Gillan Band sound but was blown away when the they kicked off with Secret of the Dance and it ended up being one of my favourite gigs, that classic line up were incredible and i saw them a number of times at various venues after that gig. Great Stuff. Vinyl - Van Morrison - Moondance, Split Enz - Mental Notes, Joe Walsh - There goes the neighbourhood, Echo and the Bunnyman - Echo and the Bunnyman, World Party - Private Revolution CD - Dave Matthews Band - Crash, Huw Costin - Something/Nothing, Ruts - Grin and Bear It, Humble Pie - As Safe as Yesterday, BTO - Not Fragile
Recently I have been listening to Blue Oyster Cult debut album, Wishbone Ash Argus, Uriah Heep Abominog, Whitesnake Slide it in and Bachman Turner Overdrive Four Wheel Drive to name a few. It is just great to have a collection where you can pick an album out and play it because you have heard a track from that album on the radio during the day and you think when I get home I am going to give that album a spin. Great choice of albums Phil, the Doobies The Captain and me, is a personal favourite of mine. It is just great album and the tracks work so well together to make a really good smooth running album.
Dear Phil, when you lifted up 'The Captain and Me' by the Doobie Brothers it brought a smile to my face. This is one of my favourite albums of all time. The solo on 'Dark Eyed Cajun Woman' is superb and 'South City Midnight Lady' is a classic. I practiced my drumming to this album back in '74 so it holds great memories. This week I have been playing Earth by Jefferson Starship. Best wishes, Paul.
Great as always! I played Sheer Heart Attack to death when I got it in 1980! Dokken, I could not agree more. My spins this week include Saxon's Crusade, early Iron Maiden, and Motorhead No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith.
FANTASTIC episode!! We're righter there together on so MANY of your choices. No question that All Night Long, a tour leg that I was very lucky to witness live first hand back in 78 along with Boston & Eddie Money no less, has always been what is in my opinion Sammy's hottest time frame ever. As a bassist myself I've always LOVED Bill (The Electric) Church's amazing playing, and of course Young Man's Blues is pretty much near unparalleled in the heavy Who dept. That songs the closest the Who ever got to the matchless jamtastic heaviness of Geezer & Tony. Today I listened to The Beatles DVD Love +1 in 5.1 dolby surround, truly a killer mix when it's dialed in and decoded properly, and then also a SHM-CD Japanese mini gatefold of Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure which is an incredible remastering job.
Saw Gillan at Friars Aylesbury a couple of times, great gigs. Current spins on Vinyl, Oliver White - A Brief Intro To Unnatural Light, Genesis - Seconds Out, Eric Burdon - Sun Secrets , on CD, David Gilmore - David Gilmore, Cosmic Rough Riders - Enjoy The Melodic Sunshine, - Marjorie Fair - Self Help Serenade and Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

How aware is anyone of "Nightwish Live at Wacken 2013"? I am 69 years old, (15 years old in 1970) so heard all the ground breaking music at that time, yet this band (and the singer Floor Jansen) is incredible. Give a youtube watch and listen, especially Ghost Love Score - this live version! It is the most reacted to video on youtube.
I saw Gillan on the Mr Universe tour. Chaos. Gorgeous stuff. I adore those samplers Phil. Have got loads of them. They were such a great route into new and different music. Cheap and glorious. Video on that would be great. All very familiar as I have loads of them but lovely things. I played ANL to death back in the day. Great live Lp. Red is a sensational opener Love Rory Gallagher. Have his entire discography. It wasn’t until 1980 when I saw him live that I really got him. Genius Cheers Phil, Chris
Love the channel, Phil. This week I've listened to a lot of Trapeze. As well as Tempt - S/t Nitrate - Feel the Heat Avenged Sevenfold - Life is But a Dream Magnum - various titles and various jazz/fusion
I have been spinning some new, old vinyl I have found at my local shop / Delaney & Bonnie debut album Home / The Allman brothers 2nd release Idlewild South & finally Joni Mitchell Ladies of the Canyon... all 3 of these albums have been spun a few times each - - very enjoyable.
Since Christmas I've been working my way through The Party, a boxset of the collected works of Max Webster and also the Gamma Elektra recordings boxset. Throw in some Dr John and Otis Redding and that's been my year so far!
Great choice of albums was there Phil. I collect samplers so yes please, go for it. My current playlist is essentially this: “Learn & Burn” - The Sheepdogs “Born Again” - Black Sabbath “Peace Like A River” - Gov’t Mule “Live And Dangerous” - Thin Lizzy (yes, still!) “The Band” - The Band … top of my playlist though is an album I bought upon release and had forgotten about. I pulled it out the other day, it looks like it had just come out of the shop brand-new when I played it I was blown away. I’d forgotten just how huge an album this was, is and shall remain. It also sounds absolutely amazing, beautifully recorded. And I can’t stop playing it at the moment
Love your program, Phil. Sometimes prompts me to look for something. On SoT this month, Pete is doing albums which are 50 years young this year. I submitted Brian Eno's debut, Here Come The Warm Jets. It's wonderful! If you haven't heard it, I highly recommend it. Be well, sir!
I was 10 when I saw Queen perform Seven Seas Of Rhye on Top Of The Pops, wow, seeing Freddie Mercury for the first time provided me with my David Bowie 'Starman' moment! Killer Queen and Now I'm Here seemed to quickly follow and soon enough Sheer Heart Attack became my first Queen album (on cassette). It remains my favourite Queen album with Queen II a close second. I love the way the songs segue together on Side One...Tenenment Funster/Flick Of The Wrist/Lily Of The Valley into Now I'm Here. Side Two's In The Lap Of The Gods, She Makes Me and In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited, also deserve a mention, what an album!
Well apart from my ongoing Sabbath obsession… (I’m on the Dio years now and having an absolute blast with them 👍)..I’ll be finally giving my Space Ritual box set a spin .. and I have an urge for my Bowie sets …haven’t been through those in a while … And not forgetting the Friday Rock show …thats Saturday morning in bed with tea and toast …😊

Well said, the joy in digging deep of one's favorites, instead of constantly looking for "the new", is often a rewarding experience, as enjoying the Rory Gallagher box sets of his first two solo albums. Nevertheless, currently playing the Brian Auger (new to me) box sets, great music and very nice packaging from Sound Bank Music. Another good box set, albeit more challenging, is Nucleus & Ian Carr Torrid Zone from Cherry Red. The Dobbies didn't set a foot wrong from 1971-1980 and Queen's Sheer Heart Attack is up there with A Night The Opera as my all time favorite Queen albums. Also started my journey with Camel's Air Born box set.
Love THE CAPTAIN AND ME...1973?!? We were 15 in High School; couple guys could play the guitar parts to "Long Train" & "China Grove". I still have a Songbook that contains this album & TOULOUSE STREET. Not note-for-note bass transcripts, but enough for me to work through the songs. Very cool you bought the LP at a Woolworth (I assume, a Dept Store). I bought some of my early LPs at Dept Stores. Production on these albums is just right. And you're correct, just feel good vibes from their music.

Hello Phil, very nice spins on your opening 2024!! I’m enjoying George Harrison’s extra texture 1975, the counting, crows hard candy & DEVO’s freedom of choice cheese from Houston 🇺🇸🎶
Great video Phil. I listened to Love Over Gold on a walk on Saturday. I always marvel at how great 'Telegraph Road' is on the album. 'Industrial Disease' was always seen as a cop-out, a bit of a precursor to 'Walk of Life' but I think it's great and fits nicely in the album. I would have liked to have heard Knopfler's version of Private Dancer but I guess you can't get much better than the Tina female vocal. Anyway, I digress! You've made me ponder getting back in front of the camera and talking about the albums I love as much as you love the albums you've showcased here. So thanks for (potentially) being an inspiration for that 👍
Whenever I think of the Doobies I always think of Jeff " Skunk" Baxter. A superlative guitarist. If memory serves I believe he played on Steely Dan tracks. Forgive me if I'm mistaken.

That's a fine collection of albums, most of which I own in one form or other, but I'd like to single out Sammy Hagar's All Night Long (or Loud and Clear which is ANL with an extra track). Hagar's solo albums may not be very...eh...let's say consistent: some belters, some meh tracks. But on "live" albums he's always able to add an extra layer of excitement, whether it's ANL/L&C or the HSAS album you talked about recently, the Van Halen live double CD, Chickenfoot's live album or The Circle's At Your Service: live Sammy Hagar shines.
