I think the main reason to run on a treadmill is to be able to exercise in poor weather. Outdoor running will always be superior, but treadmill running is better than nothing at all.
Running outside is actually more likely to cause injury. Doing the same task in the same way creates a rhythm and allows you to be in the zone instead of constantly correcting yourself. It only takes one over correction to twist an ankle. Plus running on treadmills instead of pavement lowers your chances of developing shin splints which can cripple you for weeks ruining your progress.
onefoot7 Hello! How often do you use it? I am thinking on buying one, i need to drop about 8kg, but dont really like to go outside, i prefer loud music at home 😁 But i am not sure i would have the motivation to use the treadmill as often as i should. Got any tips? Thank you
Running outside won't make you feel like a hamster in a wheel too, and you are more motivated since your hard work results in visible progress i.e you are getting somewhere.
True. Going for a run outside, especially an "out and back" run, means that every step you take on the way out makes your run longer, so you can't just stop like you can on a treadmill - you have to get home!
Outdoors for many people is hard pavement, city air and no nature and noise. Not everyone got the luxury of nice cinematic outdoor tracks in nature. And to beat the wear issue - go for HIIT - short, high intensity runs instead of long repetitive and slow.
When I had a treadmill, I got tired and stopped after 20min max, maybe out of boredom too. I just felt bored looking at the wall in front of me, changing the place of the treadmill and turning on the tv didn't work. Outside I can't stop, I have to keep going. I later sold my treadmill ans stuck to outdoor running.
See, I'm just the opposite. I watch watch streaming videos while I run on my treadmill. I used to just use a tablet, but now I have a small smart TV on the wall in front of it. I can easily go for 40 minutes, and sometimes go for over an hour. Outside, I get bored and tired much faster. Plus, I live in a climate where it literally rains an average of 150+ days per year. I'm much more likely to exercise consistently when I can do it indoors.
What I did, and had to because where I live it's difficult to run during winter because of quantity of snow, is to put a plank of wood across the two arms of the treadmill. On that I could place a tablet, phone, or laptop and mouse. A lot of the stuff you do sat at a desk or on the sofa can be done on the treadmill too.
I used to get bored until I got Zwift, now I run with 5-50 people on a 5k course, it's a real blast to do virtual running and have you tons of training partners.
Okay I'll leave the treadmill, let's go outside. Oh it's raining I'll just watch TV till it stops. Might as well make a cup of tea, have some biscuits.....
Linda Scoon run in the rain. That's why people can purchase running leggings, running jackets and thermal base layers. Its not as fun in the rain, but if you're prepared in advance then it's not all that bad.
I've always liked outdoor training more. Being able to change speeds naturally rather than having to push buttons is something I've always appreciated. I also don't have very good stride so I trip a lot on treadmills with is annoying.
then you should train outside and work on not getting distracted. that might boost you psychologically as a person, provided that running outside is a safe environment and the ground is not asphalted or cemented, or concrete.
Kashif Khan lets say you are in Beijing, one of the most polluted cities in the world, it does not matter that much if you are in a park or not, the pollution level is still high in this "open air park" because it's still in the city. Thats the point i was trying to make.
Air pollution is still possible indoors, from perfume, cigarette smoke, viruses, bacteria, molds, human dander ,chemical solvents, plastic vapor , etc.
Michael Pytel considering that not everything you said is actually there or even allowed in an indoor gym, and there are filters to purify them to some degree, i do think it is of much less concentration. Does it exist ? ... Yes sure, you can't really run away from these things, but the amounts of them differ significantly from an indoor controlled environment, to a huge city were you alone can't really make a direct effect on the whole environment.
I only said possible, not definite, however not just indoor gyms have treadmills but people's homes. Filters don't always work on all types of pollution. Of course outdoor pollution is much greater but varies from cities.
I use both, the outdoors and the treadmill. I use outdoors for low intensity cardio on days when I don't lift and treadmill for high intensity interval training after my weight lifting sessions. In this way, the derive the benefits of both. Happy exercising!
Running on a treadmill has to be the most boring form of exercise, I'd only consider that if I'm in a hotel and I don't know the city (or it's dangerous to go out alone).
I used to run in the gym. Then one day I woke up and was just sick of the whole gym thing/treadmills. Been running outside and it's way more harder then the gym and I feel thinner and better!
Advantages to running outdoors- more fun, change of scenery, fresh air Advantages of running indoors- climate controlled year round, convenient, less strain, videos, run when you like day or night, interval and hill training are easy, no rain or heat issues. Use both to your advantage. I do both and love both.
Interesting points made. They didn't mention that a decent treadmill will have some "give" in the platform and so is less jarring than running on a tarmac pavement. The other side of this is that there are plenty of people who injure themselves by falling off treadmills either by not being able to keep up with the speed they've set or stepping onto the unmoving side bit of the treadmill. Like everything in life, a balance of the two is good. I personally like the treadmill as I live in the UK where the weather is generally either wet or on occasions too hot - in my house I can run regardless of the weather, and if it's hot I can run without a shirt to stay cool which I wouldn't ever do outdoors!
Ian Tullie I have bad knees but for some reason I can run just fine on a treadmill but when I run outside at least one of them will almost always give out the points you made must be why
I also have a bad knee which is less painful on treadmill run - I think it's a combination of the soft treadmill platform reducing the impact on the joint along with the benefit of a constant pace and totally flat predictable surface. This was given as a plus point for the outdoor run in the video - the unpredictability of the surfaces you run on means you need to use the smaller muscles/tendons/ligaments for balancing, but it may also introduce a sideways or twisting motion to the knee, which you wouldn't get on a treadmill. My knee is particularly weak on rotation as that's how I damaged it when I was a kid, and so I like a predictable running surface.
When I tried to replicate my gyms 8km in 1 hour run on concrete, I ended up doing it in bout 45min. It's true; we push harder outdoors. (I've been running concrete 6 months now against 4 years at gym)
Treadmeal burns more calories as say it is set at a constant rate for an hour pushing you, if u were to do the same outside running up and down hills you'll go slower without realizing it therefore burning less calories, also say u have to wait for a car to cross a road ur not burning near as many calories honestly u don't realize it... Yea it's nice outdoors run but to burn more calories a Treadmeal set at a constant rate
I want to buy a tredmil to avoid running in the sun, I live in a desert and its just so damn hot out there. I have to either run early in the morning or late at night and it messes with my entire schedule.
very poor conclusion - the best solution is to use BOTH, there is no reason to only run outside or only on treadmill, by alternating that is how u get the best of both world, what is not mention here is to increase ur Vo2 Max and increase ur speed incrementally, treadmill is the only accurate way to go, so for an athlete who is trying to improve his/her performance, both are indispensable
Don't mix Vo2max (being in shape) , with health though...just because someone is fast, doesn't mean they are healthy...racing is fun, yes, but if older like me, mid 50's , mostly -unless you are rare-it is about easy running, and your DIET.....running fast and long (marathon) etc, meaningless on health, still can't get away with poor diet.......fast running and racing, with poor diet (eating animal products, etc, alcohol)-not good health...which is what most people are searching for, they are not Olympians.....
I love treadmill , but need to be good quality one. I use treadmill to practice my pace and breathing technique. or sometimes I run on high incline to train my legs. But in good weather I try to be outside if possible
An important difference is that when running outside you're both responsible for pushing your leg forward to take a step, as well as then using that step to push your body forward as your leg moves back to its starting position. Both these steps require you to burn energy from stored potential energy in your body to kinetic movement energy. However on the treadmill you only burn energy when pushing your leg forward to take a step, then it just lands on the treadmill and follows the movement back to its starting position, so you don't push your body forward. your foot just follows the movement. So only the first step burns stored potential energy in your body to kinetic movement energy - during the second step the kinetic energy comes for electrical potential energy from the wall outlet that makes the treadmill go. That is if you don't use a highend one that compensates for this.
Thats a very common misconception. However, biomechanically its exactly the same if youre running forward with a certain speed - and the ground doesnt move. Or if the ground moves with that same speed in the opposite direction - and you try to counter that movement and stay in the same spot: You are moving at the same RELATIVE speed. In physics, this is called "reference system" and plays a role in a lot of movements of objects and ovservers in different reference systems. Thats why in studies, there was exactly the same muscle force and energy demand if the calculated wind resistance was equated on the treadmill (usually by a 1° incline - but ofc you could also use a huge fan :) ) Two hints to put you on the right ...track (pun very intended): - If the belt helped us propelling forward or "does the work for us" - then surely it would make no difference which speed you dial in at the treadmill. It may even be easier for us the faster the belt moves, wouldnt it? Well, try that. - Practical test: Take an elastic ball. Let it fall on the belt. What will happen? If the belt did the work for us and we simply needed to "lift our legs" or bounce, then the ball should also simply bounce a couple of times on the same spot. What happens in reality? Find out!
Pretty sure there are several studies on the "wear and tear" mentioned, although knees weren't mentioned it's the obvious candidate and there's no significant increase in joint wear in runners to non runners in a study with 75,000 participants. Considering this I don't think it's really an argument for either case
Outside Running Everyday, No Treadmill im Good Without i Use A Treadmill Before, But i Prefer Outside Which is Grass, Hills, Sands, Dirt Roads, Everyday, No Equipments,
im from uae and here the outdoor sucks most days the morning the temperatures are around 80 degrees and evening like 100 degrees . also there arent too many gardens or vegetation to run on . i would like to run but my area just sucks so treadmill is a good option for me
The bigger factor here is behaviour affecting longevity. People just aren't going to run outside as much as they will run on a treadmill. For heaps of reasons. Not that this is directly answering the damn question/title of the video, but I thought I'd add it in there. Another element is that I agree there's some wind resistance outside (or maybe you're going WITH the wind, or perpendicular, but anyway), and we perceive ourselves to be running faster on a treadmill. BUT, a lot of people start to slow down as they run outdoors, their mind drifts off. On a treadmill, you the mind will also drift off, but the pace will stay the same, otherwise you fall off the treadmill and perish. I think this alone would entail far more work, in real world conditions for the average person on an average day, outside of a lab (where they will usually push harder and be more focused and consistent than they otherwise would be). Often you're just forced to slow down for safety for whatever reasons, or there can be roads to cross and stuff. The video kind of missed all of that. BUT, then there's a lot of factors that go into outdoor running (not mentioned in this video) that could even still make it more of a workout, even if the speed for instance isn't as consistently high. "Nick Symmonds Too" has a good youtube video on the differences, titled "Treadmill Running vs Outdoor Running" Also just better for the body to introduce that variability, which was partially mentioned in this BBC video. Bottom line is that both aren't very optimal methods for cardio for probably the vast majority of people, just due to how likely people are to stick with them, over other forms of cardio. But I think it is good to at least incorporate some form of running, even if it's not for cardio, just to really keep that ability going. So many people haven't actually sprinted, for years... because it's just not something that people often need to do in their daily lives. Oh, I'd just recommend people learn how to land on their feet with each stride. People smash their heels into the ground on every stride and it's absolutely terrible for the knees. Just youtube that info, and maybe look into the appeal of "barefoot" minimalist shoes, take things slow, yea.
_I run 3 mins everyday for 6 days in a week on a treadmill, will it be harmful for me or my knees in a long run, later part of my life, any suggestions?_
How fast are you running? Depending on the speed/intensity/incline of your run the answer can vary. If you're going at an average healthy pace of a 8 minute mile at an incline of 0 degrees then 3 minutes is barely anything for your health. If you're sprinting at a very high uphill incline for 3 minutes on a treadmill, that might help you health-wise because that's extremely intense, though not the safest way of doing it.
I run 15 mins at 10kmph. It gets exhausting right in the middle, but gets better around the end. And Iam 10kgs overweight, but it still doesn't hurt my legs. So imo you should be fine.
Its easier to get lost in your thoughts while running on a treadmill since the environment provides no queues so I actually end up running a lot more than if I try running outside with my preconcieved standards for where I should reach before slowing down.
Cool. But I live in Scotland where its cold, windy, rains constantly, and where I don't see the sunlight past working hours for almost half of the year...
I had come here because I've been running on treadmill for over a year. Usually just for 5 min warm ups with 20 min runs during the week. But after a year on a treadmill to running outside I couldn't last 3 minutes. It was way harder
I am surprised that no one talks about the damage of running on hard surface (outdoor) to knee joints. Nowadays, good treadmills all have a cushion feature and so much less impact on the joints.
1) Always better to get natural sunlight hit your eyes and your skin. 2) If you want healthy ankles, it is better to run where you hit variety of surfaces rather than the same level of a treadmill. That being said, Treadmill sets the pace for you and you can monitor your HR especially if your training in your 2 zone
I run much more on a treadmill than outdoors and I find that mentally treadmill running is much harder, and I run with 1% incline. One thing is air circulation, on a treadmill I sweat like a pig. The effort feels much worse than running outdoors. I think running outdoors just releases way more good hormones making you push with less noticeable effort. My outdoor running time is 1min per km better than the treadmill! It’s huge. Another thing is muscles, different muscles engage when running outdoors and I feel that here after hiding in the basement with the treadmill in Canada during winters. But for mental strength, treadmill is gold. My buddy runs ultra and he usually trains on a treadmill, in the basement, with poor air circulation, dimmed lights, no music, no tv, no anything. Just him and the treadmill. He says 3hrs on a treadmill in those conditions mentally feels like running the ultra distance.
I’m currently running outside because of gym closures in my home town, there’s 100% a difference idk what it is but I’m struggling outdoors on ground eg: I could run on a treadmill for 5,6,7 mins with walking intervals however outside I walk 10 minutes and can only run 1:30 -2:00 mins and feel completely gassed! I’m still trying to transition to outdoor running
Amy Sternheim well, i'm a dude (if you didn't know). but say if I did that, there will be a lot of eyes, and probably some sheikh would get upset and yell some gibberish... and that's pretty much it. but the thing is, women would never do that. not in my region.
my legs handle a treadmill better due to the give you get vs no give on pavement. I stay occupied watching the tvs in from of me or bringing my smart phone and youtube. i'm just used to a treadmill. i do my long walks outside though. Outside you are propelling yourself vs staying with a treadmill belt. on the treadmill, i can increase to a fast walk and increase the incline too. Neither is wrong. whichever you are more comfortable with and prefer.
I don’t run a lot maybe 30-50 K’s a week. All outdoors, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would pay to run! I live in a wet area and I love running in the rain. Makes you feel alive! Go outdoors, don’t pay extortionate gym prices.
They are pretty much just as good it mostly just depends on who you are, I personally prefer treadmill tho, since when you are done you can literally just walk off it and go directly to the bed or bathroom plus if you own one it's literally 2 steps away and in your home too. But that's mostly just my preferance due to my personality other people may prefer outside and that's really good too. Botomline it doesn't matter as long as you actually run/jog so stop arguing please.
I jog out on the roads and daily, however I find vehicle exhaust fumes something to dodge from. I would maybe not breath for a few seconds or face away when I sense fumes have been passed after a vehicle passes by. Thankfully not many vehicles drive in these roads so I don't have to stop breathing altogether 😂
Running outside is MUCH BETTER. It's visually rewarding as you get to see different sights. Start at a park and run. The next thing you know, you're in the middle of downtown Charlotte NC. Treadmills, I won't make it more than a mile because my mind is bored. This, of course, is not the same concept for everyone.
I started running on a treadmill. Then decided to try outside running. My pace and speed was all messed up. I didn't know how fast or hard I was going. Outside running is better. I can adjust my speed at whatever I need. I don't need to be worried about mph..
I recently sing up to a gym near by my home, I run on treadmill for warm up, I have my doubts about when I take an outdoor run, but it´s the only way have to run, because I don´t have any park or running track near by my place, may be I'll take some time on weekends to test an outdoor run vs treadmill run
Try it, I just started running outside and it's better and more of a workout. What I like best is I like running people in front of me down, and not letting people behind me catch up, it's a good workout.
Outside is better. I find running @ 10 degree temp is more challenging and very long stairs. I don't run with gears in any weather conditions. It's not comfortable. Do not run in 8 degree temperature without gears. It's not so fun unless you want to test your limits.
I have the darndest time switching to a treadmill... it seems way harder on a mill to run my outdoor pace... and when I slow the thing down a lil I find myself running into the control panel.... I just have a hard time transitioning...
Personally, I use to enjoy running on a treadmill as oppose to the footpath/park as you have the convenience of doing it at anytime, and you can track your progress much better, without the need to purchase other products like a watch/heart rate monitor. I know the argument could be made for running outside that you wouldn't buy a treadmill but that's just me. What I found more useful, and least stressful on your knees and ankles is bike riding, outside or indoors. It takes the weight off of your legs and helps release the stress caused by the forces you place on them. It is also very useful for people who are overweight as again, it would alleviate injury during their weight loss journey. Let me know what you guys think!
I was always under the impression that treadmill running promoted less wear and tear dur to treadmills being padded? I'd think it's safer for ligaments and joints to run on a padded treadmill than outside on an uneven terrain? Can someone with knowledge confirm?
Well if you are a high mileage runner like me, the treadmill is a life saver. Running over 40 miles outdoors in a week gives me infinite leg tightness that never goes away. My legs are smooth as silk running on a treadmill in full cushion mode. I do the faster running outdoors because when you run fast you need a hard surface anyways. But inevitable when I have a run that I did excellent. I look bmy logs and notice the pre
So many more factors to be considered when looking at caloric expenditure on a treadmill versus outdoors. Many of such factors differ from person to person. Claiming the "1.0% incline" fix has been debunked for many years. Studies rarely if ever try to claim an all-inclusive effort comparison or caloric conversion coefficients. Heat management, posterior chain muscle activation, respiratory patterns, etc etc. all need to be taken into account.
I've seen people who think they're fast hoping on at high speed for 5s but they can't even do 3/4 of that top speed on the ground since they have to start from 0 and the the ground doesn't do the work for them
I tried them both for a month everyday. It burn more fat when I run on treadmill with ac on, odd I know. But my fat belly and love handles were less when I run on treadmill. Try it out it work for me
I started running after the lockdown I love outdoor running now I do my 12km every second day in 55mins and I burn 1,635 calories and its for free I'm enjoying it than being in the gym I'm always checking things on the phone and get bored easily no more gym😅
I have my treadmill located next to my patio doors, so if it isn't pouring with rain I have the advantage of fresh air. I listen to music and watch first person marathons on my large screen TV. I don't have to constantly keep an eye out for dog pooh on dark mornings, or look over my shoulder for cyclists on the footpath. But the greatest advantage for me is: no disgusting diesel fumes or traffic noise. Treadmill running works for me. I also use a rower.
so the argument is: run outdoors because you stress yourself harder? and what if i do not want this? what about the extremly icnreased risk of injury by stepping on something, running in front of a car and so on? what if i want to keep a steady pace for losing weight, getting aerobic endurance? what if i might get a cold from the weather?
Treadmill is better for training hr zones...its like a car dyno for humans...you can kind of tune yourself to see what works best...I had an issue ab 2 months ago where I was having too high of a heart rate on easy runs and I used the treadmill to drop it by 10 to 20 bpm overall while running ab a min faster than before when it was the highest...having covid messed my cardio up and I had to kind of be careful ab my heart and build my way back up
I totally disagree with most of the factors in this video. It is much harder to balance on a treadmill especially when you're moving your head around. In terms of repetition of the same movement every step you take on a treadmill is affected by your balance and how you feel, it is very hard and better training to actually manage to repeat any foot position or cadence. Also the perception of speed is exactly the same when you get used to running on a treadmill. If you have prior knowledge of your regular speed before trying the treadmill and then you aim to run at the same speed as you normally do it feels exactly the same. At full speed full effort in a hotter environment I can just about match my straight line flat speed outdoors. The difficulty of not running into air is a disadvantage similar to wind resistant which often pays you back anyway if you run a circuit. I can improve my PB times in a matter of weeks if I work hard on a treadmill because it is more controlled and has less factors to alter perception.
I assume you are referring to Celsius temperature? Lol it rarely gets below 5 degrees in Indiana. Every 3-4 years there will be a few days that get -1 or 0 degrees but that’s it
I just did a test. The road wins, you are using more muscles and you get more of a runner's high, although you are running slightly slower. The treadmill is a great tool though, it actually prepared me for the road. I ran on it for over a year, so your lung capacity translates to the road, only your legs (more sore than the treadmill)have to catch up to outside surfaces.
i refuse to believe that you burn more energy outside due to air resistance, it's most likely due to your inertia, your center of mass doesnt really move on a treadmill, it does outside
Inertia is resistance to acceleration, not resistance to movement. Apart from the seconds when there treadmill is getting up to speed there's no real difference in the effect of inertia.
The day before yesterday I ran on a treadmill 10km in 44min(without inclination) and yesterday I did 10km in 48min outdoor( facing many hills).. today it's my day off .. so I can conclude that going outside I felt much more tired in the following day than on the treadmill..although I went much faster than running at the park.
That’s the one thing I hate about treadmills. I like to use longer paces and kind of bounce off my toes and I can’t really do that on a damn treadmill but it’s helping get me back into running so I ain’t hating
Also the treadmill passively pulls your legs backwards, taking a huge load off the posterior chain. This leads to muscular imbalances and overly anterior dominant postures.
www.czech-kt.cz/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/1_162564498.pdf There were significantly lower peak flexion angles of the knees in treadmill vs overground (103.5 v 110.1 degrees) and there was a higher angle of minimum knee flexion (10.2 v 8.3 degrees). This, coupled with lower hip (1.30 vs 1.74 Nm/kg) and knee (1.70 v 2.33 Nm/kg) extension moments in treadmill running shows that the hamstrings aren't reaching a greater contraction (due to lower peak flexion of the knee), the hamstrings don't receive as much load (due to lower knee torque) and the hips don't receive as much torque, reducing load on the glutes, which are major torque produces at the hip.
0:40 - Wind resistance? If we assume that the sum of the wind direction vector and our running direction vector is random (which it pretty much is) wind resitance cancels out. Sometimes you run against the wind and sometimes you run with the wind. I think you meant *air resistance*
i dont think its either, if you do the math you notice there isnt much of a opposing force due to air at the low speed people run at, you might feel more tired due to inertia, outside your center of mass is under acceleration a lot more then on a treadmill, which takes more energy
As soon as weather conditions are acceptable for running, and you have a natural ground that is not cemented or concreted or asphalted, than you should opt for outdoor running because it provides more psychological benefits. otherwise if the weather conditions are adverse and you cannot find a route that will not make your joints numb and cause injury, better hit treadmill or do fitness bike rides, or both. i do not see why it should be either one or the other.
In Indonesia, people smoke in great outdoor. So NOPE, running outdoor in Indonesia is even more hazardous than one would think otherwise. And not to mentiom various air pollutants from burning the waste and such
I live in Florida where the outdoor temperature regularly feels like over 100° F in the summer - no way am I running in that. I'll take a treadmill in a comfortable, air-conditioned gym.
lost 15 kg just by walking outside for 3.5 months. And then someone kept stalking me so I stopped and only go out with someone else. But the downside of walking with someone else is that u have to match their pace and can't push yourself. So I decided to get a treadmill for days I can't go outside :[
@@seventhkeyomegasghost8233 its not cool story anymore when the stalker is a 50 yr old chainsmoking neighbour who thinks he has a chance with u. The place i used to walk often is like a huge hilly park so alot of inclines and steps which was great for training but not so much the safety on days with less crowds
All very well but above and beyond all of this comes practicality and likelihood of actually doing it. Since getting my treadmill I've been doing twice a day for the last month. Quick 10min jog before the shower. Quick 10min back from work. Fast, doable, enjoyable. Going outside in the cold, dressing well and safely, staying away from idiots who have their dogs off leads, etc etc. I used to do that but just not practical. In real life it'd mean some sessions were dropped. In fact most sessions were. Strange to miss out this obvious and main advantage. Not to mention impact shock on knees if you have a half decent treadmill Vs running on concrete.
It's way too dangerous to run outside. There are humans out there.
True. Those damn creatures are the worst
... and public gyms dont have people in them....
lol
@@coreywewers1249 I own my treadmill.
One of the reasons that I don’t run outside but in the gym
I think the main reason to run on a treadmill is to be able to exercise in poor weather. Outdoor running will always be superior, but treadmill running is better than nothing at all.
I haven't run outside since July 6, 2018...all treadmill, doin just fine......
I agree
Running outside is actually more likely to cause injury. Doing the same task in the same way creates a rhythm and allows you to be in the zone instead of constantly correcting yourself. It only takes one over correction to twist an ankle. Plus running on treadmills instead of pavement lowers your chances of developing shin splints which can cripple you for weeks ruining your progress.
Yeah that's the difference cause of the weather.
onefoot7 Hello! How often do you use it? I am thinking on buying one, i need to drop about 8kg, but dont really like to go outside, i prefer loud music at home 😁 But i am not sure i would have the motivation to use the treadmill as often as i should. Got any tips? Thank you
What if I move my treadmill outdoors?
Lol
Lol
Good question!!!
Big brain time
good idea
Running outside won't make you feel like a hamster in a wheel too, and you are more motivated since your hard work results in visible progress i.e you are getting somewhere.
My progression is making it to the next track on my playlist
True. Going for a run outside, especially an "out and back" run, means that every step you take on the way out makes your run longer, so you can't just stop like you can on a treadmill - you have to get home!
Mr Mürk maybe a virtual reality headset will work
I usually watch podcasts while on the treadmill, makes time go by a lot faster.
So a hamster in a wheel with podcasts
I noticed that using the treadmill from time to time might help correcting running posture and cadence.
THIS.
I’ve noticed that too! The each have their +’s & -‘s
Outdoors for many people is hard pavement, city air and no nature and noise.

DOING BOTH HIIT AND LONG SLOW REPETITIVE WORKOUTS IS BETTER, IN MY OPINION
When I had a treadmill, I got tired and stopped after 20min max, maybe out of boredom too. I just felt bored looking at the wall in front of me, changing the place of the treadmill and turning on the tv didn't work. Outside I can't stop, I have to keep going.
What if I glue rocks to a treadmill?
The way most are designed you would then either have stationary art or a rock thrower.
The rocks would damage the treadmill. It would make more sense to glue rocks to your shoes.
Fuking brilliant lol
José Bolaños that's called a house
José Bolaños I will invest 2 million dollars with a 3% share on the company and a 0.001% royalty on every one of these sold.
😂😂
I've always liked outdoor training more. Being able to change speeds naturally rather than having to push buttons is something I've always appreciated. I also don't have very good stride so I trip a lot on treadmills with is annoying.
If I run on a treadmill it makes me noticed to keep going and not slowing down
Running outside I get too distracted
then you should train outside and work on not getting distracted. that might boost you psychologically as a person, provided that running outside is a safe environment and the ground is not asphalted or cemented, or concrete.
I wonder if there is a negative effect from air pollution especially in big cities that might make indoor running a better choice for those areas 🤔
Mohammed Madan brother people run in open air like park not on roads 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Running on a treadmill has to be the most boring form of exercise, I'd only consider that if I'm in a hotel and I don't know the city (or it's dangerous to go out alone).
listen to music or an audio book or watch tv.
It is and it feels like more of a chore since you have no destination
if the weather permits, i would always choose outdoors
Come to canada, people here run even in -20 c
I used to run in the gym. Then one day I woke up and was just sick of the whole gym thing/treadmills. Been running outside and it's way more harder then the gym and I feel thinner and better!
Advantages to running outdoors- more fun, change of scenery, fresh air
Advantages of running indoors- climate controlled year round, convenient, less strain, videos, run when you like day or night, interval and hill training are easy, no rain or heat issues.
Mike Marks maybe an ellipsis Trainer would be better because you don’t hit the ground at every step
Go and try 10 min running on both , you will find the difference!
Thank you so much!
Thats why in studies, there was exactly the same muscle force and energy demand if the calculated wind resistance was equated on the treadmill (usually by a 1° incline - but ofc you could also use a huge fan :) )
Two hints to put you on the right ...track (pun very intended):
- If the belt helped us propelling forward or "does the work for us" - then surely it would make no difference which speed you dial in at the treadmill.
Outdoor running + Spotify's Running playlist = You will never be bored.
Indoor running + Netflix = You will never stop running.
"Nick Symmonds Too" has a good youtube video on the differences, titled "Treadmill Running vs Outdoor Running"
Also just better for the body to introduce that variability, which was partially mentioned in this BBC video.
So imo you should be fine.
since your longest run wouldn't be more than 3 mins I think you're good
running is running, doesn't matter about the subtle differences inside or outside. If you focus and put in the work you'll get to where you want to be
Right
Your speed on the treadmill will be different when you are running on the outdoor track. Perfer outdoor track to improve speed.
"I'm going to try pounding the pavement" My mind just can't get any dirtier 😂.
I had come here because I've been running on treadmill for over a year. Usually just for 5 min warm ups with 20 min runs during the week. But after a year on a treadmill to running outside I couldn't last 3 minutes. It was way harder
It really depends but you need to run outside to build up your leg muscles
@@jaluntaylor4596Yess That's Right,
How about the benefit on the posterior chain that only outdoor running activates? That alone makes outdoor running far better.
doesn't matter so long as you keep moving and exercising .
Biggest advantage isn't discussed here.
Body reflex's gets better while running outdoor.
Outdoors are great when weather is warm. Winter is hard to run but everything is possible I think.
I get much more tired running outside due to the hard pavement and the uphills/downhills etc
I’m still trying to transition to outdoor running
i live in Saudi arabia, running outdoors isn't an option for women.
Why would you wanna run under the sun of the arabian desert?
Amy Sternheim well, i'm a dude (if you didn't know). but say if I did that, there will be a lot of eyes, and probably some sheikh would get upset and yell some gibberish... and that's pretty much it. but the thing is, women would never do that. not in my region.
I regularly run and I would see some women(wearing abayas) jog here in riyadh. Women can run as long as they are covered i guess.
Why are women treated that way...
Tea of the GODS
Women's Rights are limited there, but they came to America then called us racist. Surely those are delusional women.
my legs handle a treadmill better due to the give you get vs no give on pavement.
What about pollution? If you live in the city then wouldn’t it be better to run inside and away from car exhausts?
Not sure if car exhausts are that significant from a distance nowadays... I used to have to mind tank exhaust while running... That was the worst
It's the same air inside or out.
I don’t run a lot maybe 30-50 K’s a week.
All outdoors, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would pay to run!
I live in a wet area and I love running in the rain. Makes you feel alive!
Go outdoors, don’t pay extortionate gym prices.
the heat or cold makes your body work vs. an air conditioned room with dead air.
I get bored running in general, treadmill running practically puts me to a sleep.
Treadmills hurt my ankles and knees. It's also difficult to get a good stride and pace going.
Why not draw patterns and either try stepping on them or avoiding them.
I’d rather run in the cold than run on a treadmill. I can’t run anywhere near as far on one.
That's psychological.
Hey cutie lol
Try it out it work for me
If you’re using a treadmill you should put a large fan in front of it to simulate the natural cooling that you get outside.
I started running after the lockdown I love outdoor running now I do my 12km every second day in 55mins and I burn 1,635 calories and its for free I'm enjoying it than being in the gym I'm always checking things on the phone and get bored easily no more gym😅
Tridmill and indoor are my only option
I have my treadmill located next to my patio doors, so if it isn't pouring with rain I have the advantage of fresh air. I listen to music and watch first person marathons on my large screen TV. I don't have to constantly keep an eye out for dog pooh on dark mornings, or look over my shoulder for cyclists on the footpath. But the greatest advantage for me is: no disgusting diesel fumes or traffic noise. Treadmill running works for me. I also use a rower.
you didn't mention:
that the treadmill belt assists leg turnover, making it easier to run
treadmill's low impact on joins compared to road
so the argument is: run outdoors because you stress yourself harder?
and what if i do not want this? what about the extremly icnreased risk of injury by stepping on something, running in front of a car and so on?
what if i want to keep a steady pace for losing weight, getting aerobic endurance?
what if i might get a cold from the weather?
I live in northern Indiana and it gets like 40 below zero sometimes around January or February so I have no choice.
I live in Tahoe and during winter we get 10+ feet of snow. I like to put on VR head set with a scenec video and enjoy my run lol.
TIL the UK doesn't have indoor running tracks
Yes, I'm happy to find out that outdoor running is better.
Started daily morning jogs late last year, still going strong, Alhamdu lillah.
What if I had an outdoor treadmill?
The actual running is different on a treadmill. I kept overbalancing and had to learn it. It is not the same thing, the movement is different.
Also outside you have to run back
Not saying you can’t double your distance on a treadmill just throwing it out there
Well where I live is 6 months of the year 50 degrees outside and 90% humidity so actually treadmill is my best friend
Alex Lawrence prove it

There were significantly lower peak flexion angles of the knees in treadmill vs overground (103.5 v 110.1 degrees) and there was a higher angle of minimum knee flexion (10.2 v 8.3 degrees).
I think you meant *air resistance*
also no wind = less cooling so I don't how they accounted for that too ?
I think they meant the drag caused by air. I think they need to use the term 'wind' to give a sense of what they mean by drag.
i dont think its either, if you do the math you notice there isnt much of a opposing force due to air at the low speed people run at, you might feel more tired due to inertia, outside your center of mass is under acceleration a lot more then on a treadmill, which takes more energy
As soon as weather conditions are acceptable for running, and you have a natural ground that is not cemented or concreted or asphalted, than you should opt for outdoor running because it provides more psychological benefits. otherwise if the weather conditions are adverse and you cannot find a route that will not make your joints numb and cause injury, better hit treadmill or do fitness bike rides, or both. i do not see why it should be either one or the other.
sprint with 100% effort for 10~ seconds. Do that for 10 sets a few times a week.
For me I need the tread mill. I set the incline and and get to set the the speed gradually
Everyday thank you
In Indonesia, people smoke in great outdoor. So NOPE, running outdoor in Indonesia is even more hazardous than one would think otherwise. And not to mentiom various air pollutants from burning the waste and such
I live in Florida where the outdoor temperature regularly feels like over 100° F in the summer - no way am I running in that. I'll take a treadmill in a comfortable, air-conditioned gym.
is boring on the treadmill...
I listen to thrash metal

lost 15 kg just by walking outside for 3.5 months. And then someone kept stalking me so I stopped and only go out with someone else. But the downside of walking with someone else is that u have to match their pace and can't push yourself. So I decided to get a treadmill for days I can't go outside :[
😂😂😂😂
Cool story, bro
