      Doc is similar-he's got a fearsome reputation, but when you watch his videos, you see that he's just a fluffy little softie.

In Joel's case, his snappy comments never sounded that real. To me it just sounded like he was acting tough most of the time XD
      When Cleo scolded BDubs and Impulse for trying to sow seeds of doubt in Double Life? Her acting was so good she sounded like a legit angry mother XD but they've made it pretty clear by now that it's all surface level stuff.

      One of my favorite things about D&D is seeing the creativity of new players. We experienced players often get caught up in our heads: since we know what's typically done and what would be "annoying for the DM", we narrow our choices. But newbies just discovering that, "yes, you can attempt anything," will often start making wild and crazy decisions. "Can I use Shocking Grasp to electrify this chain, lasso it around the dragon's neck, and pull him down into the water to electrocute him?" Experienced players would be like, "Nah, that's not how the spell works, I won't ask," but with a good DM who abides by the Rule of Cool, they can absolutely make that work (with rolls, of course), and it will be glorious!

    • @KBRoller
      @KBRoller 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@shumpytastic3577 Maybe? But "explaining D&D" is very vague; there's a ton of different bits and bobs and rules and concepts in D&D, and you don't need to know all of them at all times. It'd be hard to decide what they should explain in such a video. I think just starting with character creation and maybe a quick session zero (pre-game game) would be good enough to get people going before the actual one-shot.

    I think Hermitcraft is almost like a DnD campaign in and of itself. It feels like each person is playing a dnd character of themselves, and there's just as much chaos and everyone writes their own story. I love what season 10 has evolved into and I think it's justified to say that we watch Hermitcraft for the story and for the interactions between yall. I have absolutely loved how everyone has gotten to know each other better, and my favourite episodes are focused on the story of the hermits together, not seperate. I see how much love has gone into all of it and this podcast esspecially brings out the best in people. It had better still be around in 10 years, because I will certainly still be watching ❤.

      The Etho interview kinda suffered from his shorter answers as well. He's not always a big talker and prefers to be more of a listener anyway.
      They felt they had to fill that space, and it ended up very unbalanced. And yes, I'm sure some of it was a little hero worship.

    I normally don't double post, but when I do, it's to let Imp and Skizz know that a D&D One-Shot is totally within your grasp. With Cleo as the GM/DM she would help you with building your characters. Most first time players its like playing a game with all the tutorials enabled and all the safegayrds on. As you learn the game the GM/DM can increase the difficulty and the possibilities start exceptional expanding. Think of it as the first time you play Minecraft, all you know is punching a tree yields wood, you literally dont even have the knowledge to think maybe, i coult automatically farm this. Trust me, D&D is amazing, sure a session might be couple hours but so is the life series. Y'all have the time for a one-shot!

      For a very long time in my current campaign, our goblin party member had an intact monkey skin as a loincloth, with its head right at the crotch. Because he threw an aggressive monkey at us, and once we killed it, that player's immediate reaction was, "I'm taking the body, and as soon as we get back, I'm skinning it and wearing it." Today, we're gonna play Dugongs and Drajons", Joe being a very funny bard, and Doc calculating his chances to Optimize and Thrive. I've never played it, but I see most of my interests align with it, so it can be the notch I need to start

    • @KBRoller
      @KBRoller 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I'd definitely recommend starting! But also, I'm not entirely sure how well Doc would gel with players like Skizz. Some people play D&D to optimize and exploit mechanics and kill everything, which is fine; but other people play more for roleplay and story. It's often the case that when those different player types play together, they clash, with the minmaxers getting impatient with story, and the RP'ers getting upset when there's too much combat or combat becomes all about mechanical advantage.
      It's not *impossible* to mix groups like that -- they just have to be patient enough to give each other space and time in the game -- but it's often difficult.

      I absolutely recommend it! But I recommend, if you want to start, finding an experienced and patient DM to run your first game. The DM needs to know more of the rules, and it's also their job to guide the story and rein the party in, so starting with an inexperienced DM can lead to a lot of confusion and disorganization. But with a good DM to guide you, it's a blast, and after a few sessions it'll really start to come naturally to you (if you like storytelling, roleplaying, or improv, at least).

    I really hope Imp and Skizz end up playing DnD, because I know they'd love it. Actually, the Life Series is kind of a great example of what DnD is like. It's a regularly scheduled hangout session with your friends that lasts 3-4 hours a week (for my group anyways, DM's spend more time, but players can get away with just a few hours a week). They seem blown away by the 2 year time commitment, but they are looking at it the wrong way. Those people enjoy their time together so much that they all set aside hours a week to make sure they can hang out together, and they've done that consistently for 2 years now.

    It was lovely to hear Cleo today. I have been quite curious about their background and this helped fill it in a lot. I have been back and watched the earliest Hermitcraft videos from everyone (currently in the middle of season 6) and listened to Cleo mention the classroom. I am surprised that no students recognized Cleo's style. Please keep informally hanging out on Hermitcraft because that is one of the biggest reasons I watch it. The developing storylines have always hooked me.

    It is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE for me to pick a favorite Hermit because every time I start to think so and so is my favorite then my brain says, "What about so and so?" I simply can't choose. However, Cleo is genuinely top tier. I smiled so huge throughout this entire episode. She says she is an acquired taste. I'm not sure I agree with that unless it simply requires having excellent taste. She is delightful and fun and wonderful and and and .... In reference to the D&D, I would suggest having a podcast episode with ALL the D&D Hermits at the same time and a couple who are not D&D but have questions/curiosity. It would be utter chaos, for certain, but if you had an episode with D&D in the title, it would blow your minds the size of audience that would reach. We D&D nerds may be somewhat hidden in the shadows, but we are legion. :) The two of you are also absolutely wonderful, fun, joyful, and amazing. This sounds cheesey and weird, but I use your content to feed my soul with positivity to counterbalance the toxic that splashes on me in the real world. You two are needed and genuinely loved. Love your faces so much. :)

    • @KBRoller
      @KBRoller 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      "It would be utter chaos" -- but what good D&D campaign *isn't?* 😁In my current campaign, my paladin tried to make a deal with a goddess of fortune, accidentally summoned a goddess of misfortune, and is now working for/with her anyway. At one point, our party was being chased by some enemies, and he reached out to the goddess and asked for "misfortune to befall those who are chasing us". Well... it did... but of course a goddess of misfortune is a monkey's paw, and we also got caught up in the ensuing destruction. We lost our ship and all got shunted into Ravenloft... Utter Chaos is the working title of D&D in my opinion 😂

    • @christofferoff
      @christofferoff 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      She's definitely an acquired taste, and I'm glad she is!
      People like Mumbo and Grian have near universal appeal because they're soft and lovable. Even when Grian pranks someone he does it in this snickering schoolkid way, he's an adorable scamp. I love creators like this, and so do millions of others.
      Cleo is by all accounts the other end of the spectrum. She's spiky, she's bitingly sarcastic, she will insult you to your face and laugh about it. We all know this is her style of humour and her way of showing affection. As someone who also comes from a family where we insult eachother for fun, I find her content extremely comfortable and relatable. But that kind of humour and persona does not have the same kind of universal appeal. She's a bit more edgy and off kilter, and people might take longer to settle into her style. She knows this.

I haven't played a lot of D&D or similar, but I've done a a couple. And it feels inevitable that "struggles to speak up" me ends up in a group with at least one person who is assertive and comfortable with this style of play. Skiz, the easiest way to think of DnD is the theater of the mind. There are no boundaries to what you can do. Good, evil, and / or neutral are options that are open to each player at any given moment. The only possible limitations are the roll of the dice.

What she means, is that you can just have a single session in a single day to play a brief adventure with some characters to learn what dnd is all about. When she says "campaign" it means a string of adventures with the same characters. If you're not totally clear on what a one-shot is, it's a little D&D adventure that wraps itself up in a tidy 2-3 hour box!
    My first experience with D&D was a fun one-shot where a kid had stolen a wand from his parents while they were throwing a fancy party, and was turning all the guests into wild animals of all types.
    Our party had to enter the mansion, brave the wild animals (some were predators, beasts, etc.), and disarm the kid.
    Along the way, we found a thief trying to burgle the place during the chaos. He was hiding under the bed. As we had retrieved the wand, my character aimed under the bed and turned the burglar into a bunny, who we trapped in a bag and carried out.
    There was combat, whimsy, adventure, and banter. An incredible first experience!

One of the reasons I like streams- it's like being a part of a conversations, and so much more chill, normal, and more natural and interactive.
    I DO need reminders to hit the like because I always forget though!!!
    Loved seeing Cleo today! Keep up these great podcasts guys!

    Cleo, you have been the one hermit that I have been mostly inspired by... I'm not the greatest builder, and you have said the same about yourself, it makes the expectations so much more accessible to us

    Having Imp and Skizz play d&d would be such an enjoyable video/podcast idea!

    Concept: get a bunch of the hermits/lifers together and do a dnd session podcast. Even if its only a one shot session, it’d be really fun to see you guys doing some dnd together.

    Mark my words, once Skizz figures out that tabletop RPGs are essentially just long form improv with dice, he's never coming back up for air.
    ETA: I get that about being an acquired taste, and I do believe I have acquired it. Thank you for being you, Cleo.

    I just envisioned an alternate universe where Hermitcraft crew started a D&D campaign and became what Critical Role is now!

      I get more of a Smosh Sword AF vibe from the hermits (if Smosh actually continued that...)

    This was brilliant to listen to! Cleo has some of the best one liners and quotes from the life series, their humour just vibes with me so much

    This was one of my favourite episodes, Cleo and Skizz compliment each other so well. I could watch a whole podcast show just of them talking random life stuff.

    We NEED a Tango / Joe / Cleo / Imp / Skizz D&D one shot. Just for one stream, it'd be golden.

      "Golden" in viewers laughing so hard they wet themselves. The jokes and puns would be awful and hilarious.

    Everyone wants to see HermitCraft D&D. You could make it an Imp&Skizz special, or even do it on the HC server. All you really need is dice, so maybe make a little arena and have some random number generators in game. That would be pretty cool!

    • @KBRoller
      @KBRoller 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Honestly, they don't even need dice if they use D&D Beyond; it's got virtual dice for them. *EDIT* I just re-read your comment and realized you were saying to do it in Minecraft. I don't know how well that would work, given all the character sheet bookkeeping, and how much of the fun is just people telling a story together. The MC world might take away from that a bit by feeling superfluous.

      @@KBRoller Joe in one season of HC built Castle Ravenloft, and he has absolutely used it to run games on like charity events and stuff. It basically ends up functioning similar to how a drawn map might. It's not crucial or anything, but it's a fun way to give a sense of space. And on something like a stream, it's probably more visually interesting than flat 2d maps.
