Kathleen's analysis at the end was most appreciated. I was also concerned about the welfare of the cormorants. It looked like a very cool traveling back in time sort of experience though.

I'm enjoying these a lot because I'm not the touristy type and never go out of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area when I go to japan. It's nice seeing that stuff because as it is I probably never will even when I go live there for a while.

I am in Japan (by the time you read this post) and its really fascinating how things are here. While I am not doing the things that you two are doing, its great to see the areas of Japan that I did not plan to go to through you. Thanks for posting these videos :D

I am actually amazed at how much I am enjoying this series. Not being a giant weeb I thought I'd fall off after the first couple of episodes but I'm still looking forward to each episode. Can we start Kickstarting G&K's holidays so we can get more of these?

I have been to Gifu for cormorant fishing. It was fascinating and horrifying, and the video captures so much of that.

12:45 it was in Hakone or Kyoto when we had to take a bus, the four of us desperately working out "wait, how does this work?" while on the bus. Luckily, we had spotted the tickets and Irish buses have a similar "pay per stop/section" model - but pay in advance, of course.

These videos keep getting longer and longer. I eagerly await the final installment, a feature-film length summer blockbuster in IMAX 3D.

I have to admit, it is kind of strange to watch this, my wife and I booked a trip through Japan for next July and so far you guys did our planned route, the only difference is after we land in Kansai we were planning a quick trip west to see Himeji castle, before back tracking and doing the same route, each episode is kind of like betting on our next stop. My wife very much appreciates this though, she hasn't really been out of Canada before and you guys are helping to ease her mind and making her really look forward to it.

This was really, really great. Fascinating! I had never heard about cormorant fishing. It's funny, from the last episode it sounded like this day was the least planned of your days, and from the looks of it it might have turned out to be one of your best ones! That's always nice when that happens.
Also buses are impossible to manage no matter where you are, with the stops and the ambiguous payment etc. I am glad you didn't beat yourself up about it too much. :)

I'm actually living in Gifu as an exchange student. Seeing it from Graham and Kathleen's eyes was weird and amazing!
Hey, if you ever find yourselves going back to Gifu,. I highly recommend early August to see the fireworks festival. It's by the same river as the cormorant fishing and it's several hours of stunning fireworks display. With Penelope in the picture, it might take a while until the next Japan trip happens, but hey, it's never too early to start planning, right ;)

Again, thank you for these vlogs. I don't travel pretty much ANYWHERE. Saskatchewan mostly for family, and occasionally to BC or Ontario, and that is largely because it's such a hassle, for me thanks to having really bad vision and ect (Anxiety anyone?) blah blah, so to watch these and see a culture I am largely unfamiliar with, yet recognize parts of thanks to some minor anime watching as well as just plain beautiful scenery is a real pleasure.
Like I said previously, I may someday actually get up and go there.
(Must admit though, watching that Cormorant up-chuck a fish nearly made me hurk ;-P )

Not sure how I feel about the cormorant fishing, that it sure is an interesting process

  •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That disc throwing reminds me of carnival games. I guess the shape would also interfere with a plain overhead throw?
I can just see how in a baseball anime the captain of a struggling local high school team happens to see the new transfer student there nail both throws and then recruits them against their will.

Liked how Graham gave an extensive explanation as to why it wasn't their fault that it was so difficult to find any information on the boat and port, to which Kathleen just dismisses as 'you didn't try hard enough' and 'it's our fault'. Next time you can look up the info on the website, DeVere.

Evochron she could be using her maiden name for her content online and legally it is stark. Lots of actresses will do that. But if she didn't that is her choice and if that is true, graham does not seem to mind.

  • @Chasmodius
    @Chasmodius 8 ปีที่แล้ว

The cormorant fishing doesn't appear to be _cruelty_ like bull-fighting or some modern industrial livestock processes (or "traditional" ones like with veal), but from a purely moral standpoint, it's hard to justify the continued practice -- especially as it's essentially just tourism and entertainment now. That's the same set of moral arguments that make pet ownership troubling, too, so I'm not going to claim that I'm not hypocritical on the subject. I think it comes down to a question of how much of a life is made up of consciousness and feelings, and how much is it simply following pre-programmed responses to stimuli -- whether that be instinct or training? The issue of lifespan seems irrelevant to me if you cannot show that the life being lived is one of greater or lesser quality and "fulfillment" (whatever that means for a bird?).
