    I appreciate you! I attend a PWI and I am currently the only black person in my cohort and I have to remind myself everyday I worked hard to get there. I also had imposter syndrome throughout undergrad even though I excelled. I said simlar things to myself downplaying my achievements.

      Greetings,Peace🙏🏼 , I just read your comment. I’d like to salute you for your achievements and courage. My ex boyfriend - who was Congolese was the only melanated man in the University of Lausanne in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and this same doubtful “ imposter” thought got to him, he started having and identity crisis due to it. Please don’t let it get to you - stay strong 💪🏽 celebrate the differences, find strength in them, you’re there for knowledge and excellence !!! AND SLAY! You’re there because of the opportunities you’ve fought for that are socially just given more to a certain group of people. That Injustice doesn’t make you deserve it less! On the contrary you’re a part of the future new quota that’s suppose to simply be normal! 🙏🏼Peace and SUCCESS! Bliss to YOU! ❤️

    This video came at such a perfect time! I’m entering my internship next semester at a psych hospital and I have been questioning a lot when it comes to my education and actually being able to help others, especially because I myself have struggled with depression and anxiety. It definitely feeds into that imposter type of thinking! I would love a video talking about your internship experience, the feelings you had going into it, and any tips you have!

    I realize this video is over 2 years old, but I am so glad I found this! Thank you so much for all of your videos, they have helped me so much! I am just starting my practicum and have been in my master's program for a year. I love the office where I am doing my practicum, but I feel so "thrown into the deep end" so to speak. I would love you to do more videos on how you overcame your fear and insecurities when you were first seeing clients!

    Omg this helped me so much w understanding the affirmative action/ quota box checking imposter syndrome. That has got to be so hard. Mine, as a beginning counselor sounds like “I made it through school and internship bc I put on a good front and I am a good fake. If they really knew who I am, what I’ve done, what I do, they’d never hire me or trust me w clients.” Working on this

    Thanks for sharing your personal experiences with imposter syndrome, those were really helpful.
    As a counseling student about to start my internship, I’d say I don’t really have faith in my prior schooling and believing I know more than the client. My fear is seeing a client that may know more about how to help themselves and live happy and fulfilling lives than I do or can help them with. Of course they’re coming to counseling to seek help with that, so they’re most likely not an expert at it, but my concern is that I can’t offer much more to them...it sounds a bit silly in writing but that imposter syndrome talk is clever 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @StephAnya
      @StephAnya  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Most clients know what they need better than we do! They just need a space to process and organize their thoughts. Most of the time, my job is just repeating back to them what they’ve already said. Something like, “Wait. Did you hear yourself? That’s your answer right there!” Trust me, you know a lot more than you think, and if your client knows even more- that’s even better!

    Wonderful job and very helpful. I will be beginning my search for a practicum and internship site in my rural area in just a couple months. I too am struggling with impostor syndrome. I work in an automotive factory and have never worked in a professional, let alone clinical, job before. Also, I am a male and feel like that could possibly create some barriers, especially after watching another video that provoked some concerns. I hope I am wrong. Finally, I’ve come a long way from having a severe social anxiety disorder, but am not completely cured. Thanks again.

    I felt this at my core! I know this video is from 2 yrs ago, but I love it! I dealt with major imposter syndrome in my first job. I didn't feel like I deserved it, I never felt good enough, and as time went on, I felt that the people (higher ups) at my job started to purposely make me feel that way so I wouldn't ask for a raise, which I didn't. Most of the company consisted of men (which I think is another aspect) and it really did start to become a toxic work environment and I finally quit. After I quit, I was doubting my abilities and skills to start freelancing, but tested it out. I have now been freelancing for two years and I will forever be grateful for my first client, because he made me realize that I AM worth it, I DO have the skills and ability, and I get that validation through all of my clients. It takes one client, one person to change your perspective. My hope is that more women working in a male dominated industry can be brave and persevere.

    Hey Steph, I am a Canadian counselling student coming near the end of my program. Honestly, I love your videos. I found the first one on Gottman when I was peeping for a project. It was so refreshing to just review the info in such an organized way, all the key points. You are a pleasure to watch. I have shared your vide with others in my cohort as well. Watching this video on Imposter Syndrome and hearing your personal perspective is invaluable as an upcoming Counselor to feel inspired and then , to hear your experience also provides needed awareness. You really are an inspiration to me. Thank you for bringing your incredible self to us all!

    Thanks for this video!!!! I actually struggle with this now as an owner of a nonprofit and being an " influencer" in black aquatics. Its like people see me on a much higher platform than I see myself. Now I realize my imposter syndrome is hindering my progress with my company because I have a hard time branding/ promoting myself because I feel like I don't deserve to be on a platform....but i DO! I Damn sure deserve to be here! I just gotta own it.

    Just like many people here, your video came at a perfect time for me as well! Thank you so much for making a video of this. It's something I've struggled with my whole life and at different stages of my life. Not until a few months ago, I finally figured out it had a name! I had heard about it but had never made those connections. So, now I've been making connections as to how my upbringing has contributed to this. I've been realizing the root of why I feel this way. For me, it's been so empowering. I love that you share your own experiences because it shows others that even professionals feel this way! I've been in different fields and have studied different things and each time this syndrome has held me back, on top of being around toxic people. Thank you so much again ❤😊

    This video is so, so helpful. I just turned 30 in March and I recently made the decision to get a Masters in Counseling. I'm super excited, but also terrified (I have a BS in Civil Engineering, Undergrad and my time as an Engineer was turbulent to say the least). I'm going to be intentional about coaching myself through self sabotage and imposter syndrome as I pivot into this new season of my education and life. Thank you so much for being so open.

    My Problem is I complete something and I don't think I received enough training since I have always been a slower learner. Then I surprise myself that I was able to complete the objective. I suffer from a negative view of myself even when others hold me in high regard, and it sucks because you can never enjoy your own success. My success is very few and far between so I must savor what I can do. It's extremely depressing and being antsy like I need to be doing something. Also just suffering from social media envy.
