  • Look and discussion about the Traxxas summit and why I think it is probably the most underrated and versatile RC truck on the market. It has been around for almost 10 years and is still one of the best. From rock crawling to trailing and light bashing this truck can do it all. Running on twin 2S batteries this truck brings for ass four-wheel-drive to speed capability to any terrain.

    The Summit got me back into RC. I hadn’t had any RC cars since I was a kid in the 80’s when I used to build them. It was fun but I got older and moved on from it. 8 years ago I came across the promo video for the Summit and was blown away. I never thought I’d see an RC car or truck doing what the Summit did and right out of the box! I bought one with my next tax refund and am still using it today. It really can do a little of everything and do it really well. It’s a great truck and there really is nothing like it. If someone wanted just one RC for off-road fun, I’d recommend the Summit easily.
    I’d like to see a Summit 2 eventually though. I think it’s time for a brushless version with upgraded gears, differentials and axles. If it weren’t so expensive, I’d upgrade mine but when all the upgrades are in, it’s the price of a whole new truck. As it is though, the Summit is a landmark in RC history.

    I bought one of the last ever Traxxas Summits ever made. I even beefed it up with E-REVO 2.0 pushrods and A-arms. Now it’s built tougher than an average Summit!❤ I also installed Arrma tether body clip retainers to prevent losing the body clips AND make it much easier to remove the body.

    RC videos are most often new vehicle reviews and maintenance information later on. We all know the Summit is the least "money pit" RC you can buy. So people aren't posting content because there isn't really anything new to add other than repeating how amazing the thing is. I love mine and it's like walking the dog. Your trail buddy. It's also in its own class. You either have a Summit, or you don't. If you hate the work bench but love rc, buy a Summit. After 4 years with mine, I've only replaced the two steering servos with one really good one and put in a new motor. If you could only have one rc car, I would choose the Summit. Long run time, very versatile. Large scale without large scale cost. Great right out of the box. Lol this guy is right about the videos. Very little new content.

    Good video! You’re spot on about how the current RC social media culture is to only post the latest rage, but the increasing popularity of the hobby has sort of been the root cause, due to more manufacturers jumping into the market. When I first got into scale crawling, 6 years back, the Axial SCX10 was pretty much the go-to scale/trail truck, which made it easier for a lot of people to relate to one another. Now, however, that market is saturated with multiple platforms, which has divided people into smaller tribes, but also spoils the overall community into craving more new releases. I’ve been changing my attitude to not jump at every new release, but focus on what really appeals to my driving interests. For many years I’ve thought about a Summit, but lacked an open area to run it, until recently, having moved out of the urban area and into the country. I had a Kraton 6S for a short time, but got rid of it. I didn’t like its singular purpose. The Summit’s versatility has a greater appeal for me. There are some Dept Natl Resources lands nearby, with large open spaces, but too rocky for a speed truggy. Summit would be perfect!

    • @LargeeeScaleLife
      @LargeeeScaleLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s the thing that appeals to me about the summit I have some areas to run bigger speed RC cars but there’s some places around here where I’m at there are a lot of trail hiking places with some nice rock crawling areas mixed into it along the way and get to some of these rocky areas Mohs scale crawlers would have trouble getting there the summit will just go through anything and if you want to take it out and bash around you can do that

    • @rcdabbler
      @rcdabbler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Large Scale Life Kind of funny...many of the mountain trails I’ve hiked have “goat trail” sections that are too narrow for a Summit. At the same time, I would occasionally have to pick up my scale truck and carry it. I wouldn’t want to take the Summit up one of those, anyway, because it would be too heavy to have to carry several miles down, if it broke. Thanks for the sub! I see that you’re working on a backyard course. I’ll have to get an update video on mine, once I make some more progress. Family life keeps it slow going. ✌🏼

    I've had a Summit for probably 5 years (give or take) and left it stock for a long time. I just started modifying it. I installed a brushless Castle Mamba Monster 2 in it, but not for speed, for durability. Brushless motors last far longer than brushed motors do, obviously. I've got a set of Dick Cepek wheels on it with 40 series RC4WD Rock Crusher tires. I also have eliminated the twin servo setup as I've got to boost the BEC voltage. The servos aren't stock and always caused brown outs if I turned the wheels rear quick. The twin servos draw enough amps to shut my Castle ESC off and reboot. I have a castle programming card, but it doesn't turn on and think the plug is damaged. Anywho, other than the brushless, tires and wheels, and the servo, mine is still mostly stock. I've used it for Creek runs, mud bogs, dirty trail rides, run in rainy wet conditions. All that and I can honestly say, after a good cleaning, still looks like new. For the conditions I've used it in and the time I've had it, I am very impressed with it when cleaned up. Over the years, it's needed very few repairs, one diff repair and that is literally the only repair I've ever done to it. Still running the old TQ transmitter not the TQI. The old TQ transmitter with the flip up antenna. Lol. Reliable, has been.

I’m actually really curious in that brushless set up what kind of pinion are you running? Do you still run it in both low and high gear? Definitely like the durability and longevity factor I don’t wanna speed demon or a basher but would like it for the reasons you stated and I have looked at those Wheels they look pretty awesome I would actually like to try said which tires did you go with? @@LargeeeScaleLife The pinion is a 13 tooth. I only use low gear until I change all the micro servos. Only one for one of the lockers currently function. The tires are sold on RC4WD and are called Rock Crushers. They can only be used with 40 series wheels. The difference is the surface where the tires meets up with the wheel is at an angle rather than squared like your typical wheel is. The tires are very similar, if not the same, as what is found on the axial yeti. The tires measure 8 inches tall via tape measure but are listed as 8.26. Diffs like to explode on insane brushless mode. You'd need to run it on 4s or shim the diff and be careful on 6s. 4s would still be much better and capable of 40mph or even more (definitely more powerful than the trx3.3 that pushes the Revo to 45mph). Even on my erevo 2.0 I've blown up a diff on 6s and they are by far the largest and strongest in the industry, and I've destroyed a diff on my revo 2.5r in 2006. The older style revo bulkheads are far more difficult to work on. The newer ones split in a way that you can leave the top of the bulkhead attached to the chassis with suspension and just drop the bottom skids and 6 screws keep the bulkheads together, plus the screws holding the tie rods and blue aluminum piece.

  • @KTMcaptain

    12:12 I noticed you have the black PTFE shocks and gold TiN shafts and was thinking, did he upgrade his shocks before using it? Went to traxxas' website and it says they're standard... That's pretty nice. I had to buy the TiN shafts for my erevo 2.0 and still don't have the black PTFE shock bodies. I only did mine because I was already getting into the shocks to change the pistons to the VDK ones along with much thicker oil.

      americanguy87 I have never had a problem with one but however it is a very large very High torque motor the good thing is a replacement motor is pretty cheap. There are also a lot of people that replace these motors with Dewalt 880 motors out of a drill and have good results.

    Please save me from making a mistake.. I wanted the trx4 defender and I'd be getting one for Christmas, but I've read and heard whispered that as a speed basher I'd be happier with a Summit?? HELP ME!😂
    -Ok I'm nearly convinced that the summit is a better choice for my first open wheel and my first Traxxas, will the defender body fit on this truck with custom mounts?

    • @LargeeeScaleLife
      @LargeeeScaleLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So if you’re looking for a Rockcrawler/trail truck that has a lot of realistic scale looks then the defender is a great way to go our own one and I absolutely love it but it is definitely not a basher if you run it in high gear really fast all the time you’re going to have issues. That being said the summit is an amazing truck if you want one of those do it all trucks. It can crawl it’s not a super scale crawler but it can crawl it’s a great trail truck and a fun light bashing truck. As long as you don’t do what a lot of people do get a summit throw a huge brushless motor in it and then expected to be a worthy trail truck still and you understand its limitations as a basher then it’s a great choice. As far as the body fitting probably not the defender has weird body mounts with the inner fenders and all that but you could possibly find a Land Rover body to fit I honestly love the summit body I think it’s really really cool and I’ve done a few custom paint jobs on them I have one that is color changing one that is stock and one that’s done in a resident evil Themep

    Well there's nothing to compare it with after all. I love mine, though I will start modding it as soon as I get home from the family Xmas. But it obviously isn't "scale", and it isn't exactly any scale at all. The body is kind of 1/10th, but the wheelbase and track width of the beast is kind of 1/8th. It's like a 1/10th monster truck, but kind of isn't.
    Let's face it, the only thing it definitely isn't is MINI !!!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

    How is it compared to the trx4

    • @LargeeeScaleLife
      @LargeeeScaleLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s kind of hard to compare the summit will do a lot more versatile things than the crawler will. But it’s more like a monster truck the TRX is an absolutely amazing crawler if you’re looking for a pure rock crawler or a more scale trail truck. If you were just wanting to go on some light trail runs or just do rock crawling the TRX might be the way to go. The nice thing about the summit is you can bash it around a little you could do some more rugged trail runs and stuff like that it’s a jack of all trades but a master of none.

      So depends how you run it if you’re running it in low gear calling and trailing you can get probably 2 to 3 miles out of a set of batteries if you’re running it in high gear and bashing with it you’ll probably get 20 or 25 minutes

    Hold On HOLD THE FUCK ON. FIRST AND FORMOST ITS 1/8 SCALE DUDE. So you want to compare. It doesn't even matter. The tires and wheel base is so much wider it doesn't even compare to scale Rc's Don't get me wrong it's Absoulutely amazing and tottaly agree with it's a king. Now days people love to be realistic. That's it. Nothing more. Alot of us 4×4 for real. The real deal. We are out there doing the actual thing. How can you even compare the two. The summit is definitely so, so much wider. I also love the Land cruiser that has great stuff to it. Locking all differentials etc. You can't compare the two. One realistic one not. You want to pick. Chose one all trail all trail. You're summit, unrealistic and fast slow and badass cool. It's what you want. I love the summit but it's all what you want so why trash any. Traxxas rocks either way. Take you're pick, their the best out there for what you actually want. I choose real life trail trucks in RC. Yours the summit. I also have a Slash with the Vilenieum system only because, I love short course racing. It's what you love period.

      I’m simply pointing out that tracks is classifies it as a 1/10 scale as it has a 1/10 scale body but it’s truly a 1/8 scale. And as far as choosing I love them both for different reasons I absolutely love my scale crawlers I like real rock crawling as well. Not exactly sure where I touched a nerve here

  • @KTMcaptain
    @KTMcaptain 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Way more capable than any of the scale crawlers, but it lacks the realism. Traxxas should have went the other way with this. Made it a sensored brushless 6s truck that can crawl and bash. Instead they loaded it up with cheap brushed motors and asked people to spend brushless erevo money on it.

      Would be cool if they could make a diff with the t-lock actuator but instead of a dog-clutch it adjusts a slipper clutch so you can have performance e-diffs and adjust, or have a computer, the strength of the lock up on the fly.
