Even Skream has stated that he likes the fact that Dubstep in America has fostered whole new types of music, and created a whole new group of people that are interested in electronic music. Whether or not current dubstep sounds like the pioneers or not is irrelevant. Inspiration creates inspiration. How can MORE music be a bad thing? Don't be so narrow-minded. Listen to what you like, and let people listen to what they like. We all enjoy electronic music, thats what counts.
Exactly, besides you can't just expect music to not evolve. Things change and sometimes you just can't stop it for better or for the worse. In my opinion this is for the best considering that it's branching out and it's giving more opportunities for more to listen to this type of music.
Just so everyone knows, kj sawka has standard midi drums, and Downlink and Excision have what I think are Starr Labs Clippers, which could be used to control an ableton session. On their Facebook they thanked various producers for giving them their project files too, so that's how they play other people's songs.
Actually, they have modulator wheels on the guitars so that they can apply effects to the samples (the same a CDJ & mixing board would do for you only the concept is in a guitar), this idea is a mere replica of DJing only in a band presence and I feel like it's a superb idea, it also really helps them put more of a performance attitude in to the show by not being behind a table the entire time.
Looks like an insane concert. But I wonder if Excision and Downlink enjoy doing this sort of performance. After all they're not recreating the synth parts live, just playing back samples from the studio tracks, and you get no feel of a performance that way at all. But they've only just started, hopefully they'll start playing it on actual synths and be able to improvise and so on.
DESTROID is fuckin AWESOME! Those are ALL talented musicians on their own, with just laptops. I could care less if someone is actually playing a real guitar, or real drums. Who gives a fuck what they are doing up there, which is pretty kick ass if you ask me! If you dont like the video, dont fuckin watch it! MAD PROPS to Kegan & Smalley on the visuals!
I am so sad i missed this. I was in town, too: down in San Jose. Ah well. X said in his AMA that they would be going to Seattle, so I will have to catch em there.
So...? Still plenty people making the "good old" dubstep out there, and it's evolving in many different directions. By the way, nobody even SAID Destroid was dubstep. Skrillex never said he did dubstep. You just assumed they did.
Ok, I see what you're saying. And I typed that comment before seeing what the "guitars" looked like. I see the buttons they have, those are the coolest Midi controllers ever. Also something to note; KJ sawka has some sort of midi controller by his drum set so he's not just playing drums.
That feel when I try to look up their instruments for fucking ever, especially I think I remembered reading about them a while ago. I gave up and now, sure enough, you post the answer here haha. Thank you!
LE is a legend, he is at the top and has no need to be jealous of anyone, especially not these guys. These guys are just part of a short term 'brostep' EDM phase which will be gone in less than a year. The real dubstep (benga, etc.) will remain and genres like DnB will continue for a long time. This is just music for 13 y/o's.
Well I'm not 100% sure but I believe from excision's facebook that the guitars are midi controllers that are shaped like guitars. Excision has pics of them on his FB. The drums are live though...which is FUCKING AMAZING, DAT DRUM SOLO!!! :O
I would say it's a little different from DJing because there's live drums, with the samples played along with it in real time. Personally I use hardware synths and use mod wheels and expression pedals to control any wobbles, screech effects etc and I find it more fun that way. But yeah what Destroid are doing is still a brilliant idea and brings dubstep and D'n'B to life a lot more on stage.
I know that Downlink's axe has guitar strings on it. Of course we can't see close enough on any of this stuff to tell what either of them are doing with their left hands (right, in X's case), so who knows if they are just for show or what.
idk i guess id have to see it live. iv seen Downlink live (amazing) and iv seen Excision with 100,000 watts of bass. (AFUCKINGMAZING) im just not so sure whats goin on here
THIS is the ultimate proof that dubstep can be hardcore and brutal as fuck! I have never seen ANYTHING like this before! Fuck modestep and their live shows! This is the shit!
That's because the band intentionally misspelled the word "destroyed" for their name. If you type into TH-cam something like "Destroyed performing live concert", you won't find this band. Just thought I'd bring this up in case you were not aware. The band's name is spelled as "Destroid", instead of the normal "Destroyed". So that's how you'll have to spell it if you want to see more videos of their concerts. You really can have a lot of fun doing that too; there are several videos of their concerts so it's really a fun little rabbit hole to go down! :) I know, because I've done it myself! Even downloaded some of the videos as mp3 files for my own personal enjoyment.
the fact is.. the genre is Dubstep! thats why if ur in a club and you hear 140bpm half time shit, (not breakbeat), people generally say 'oh it's Dubstep'... not brostep or what ever
I think that everyone should be able to have there own preference in music and not have to fight over there tastes, I personally love destroid but if @Habeas C doesn't prefer brostep or whatever you want to call it than he shouldn't have to argue with someone else online about americans ruining genres. just enjoy the music or if you don't go listen to your favorite artist live and don't rip on ours.
listen to dubstep allstars 3 by kode9 and you'll hear what it sounds like. its on youtube. no drops, no head banger bullshit, no power rangers prancing around on stage. this is real dubstep. if you don't like it, then its time to admit you don't like dubstep and in fact, you prefer brostep. there's no shame in that, there is just such a huge difference in style and sound that a distinction deserves to be made.

MIDI guitars. first half of their set is loded with over 5000 sounds and samples. the next half the sounds are switched out with other sounds and samples.
I'm pretty sure they have a simple track going and then just use those instruments to make some tweaks. its mostly for show but its still freaking awesome :P
I love how Brostep youtube arguments always somehow include Skream and Benga. Sorry guys but if you go to a joint Skream&benga show, they'll be playing alot of brostep.
They basically have the melody playing on the speakers on some laptop somewhere, KJ sawka does the drums, with downlink and Excision playing the Bass parts. I could be wrong about that, or maybe they are completely faking it and they only do it to look super awesome.
We need another destroid album
Won't happen man....
or just another live tour :)
how is it possible that abelton hasnt crashed
Ableton*
Cause its not abelton heavily based is synths and stuff! Controllers if you will?

Soo fucking epic. Seen them twice now. Never been disappointed

I love How they jump a bit
Downlink is DEFINITELY me,just jumping around
This collab is insanity. Like Daft Punk's evil cousins.
Destroid > Skrillex
Kevin Benoit skrillex style of music completely different
Excision alone>skrillex
Any other Dubstep artist>Skrillex
All these uneducated candy kids don’t know shit about the real, UK Dubstep that came out WELL before Skrillex.
They fucking make the music, which is fucking badass to begin with. So let them do their thing, midi controller or not, they're fucking awesome.
para mi de los mejores grupos...le dan un toque hardcore y les queda dpm!
*Just Shapes and Beats* fans, if you're looking for your Annihilate fix, head over to 38:42. You're welcome.
As a JSaB fan I thank you,
It was truly amazing.
Man...I wish I built a time machine so I can go there without a problem
THANK YOU for posting this. This was my first live show ever with this much production, and it exploded my little bass head brain!
Just so everyone knows, kj sawka has standard midi drums, and Downlink and Excision have what I think are Starr Labs Clippers, which could be used to control an ableton session. best night of my life!! fucking awesome so glad to have been there

We need this again

THIS!!!! Is EXACTLY what I've been trying to tell people. Great post.
Funk hole at the beginning...awesome!
I am so sad i missed this. I was in town, too: down in San Jose. Ah well. X said in his AMA that they would be going to Seattle, so I will have to catch em there.
these guys are crazy
I love this guys

this looks like an amazing set! i wanna see it
So sick got to see this love and holy hell!
i don't mean to budge in, but maybe the fact that you clicked on the video provided the idea you are a fan. just putting that out there xD
I missed it by one day, ONE FUCKING DAY. Came to SF on Saturday. Such shit. They better come to Denver soon >_>
That feel when I try to look up their instruments for fucking ever, especially I think I remembered reading about them a while ago. I gave up and now, sure enough, you post the answer here haha. Thank you!
Camp Bisco cant wait Guarenteed Late night sett.
Now THATS ENTERTAINMENT RIGHT THERE!!
Those suits. Yes.

Comments that did not age well... lmao
If you're not an Excision fan what are you even doing here
Love it

So, Mark Instinct and Specimen A, really wish I had been there!!

In edition to the other guy's comment, Guy on the left is Downlink and the other is Excision.

please playlist....
it's hard to believe that anything is played live in 2013..
this is to insane to be a thing
It's all a matter of opinion, but Destroid is pretty fuckin' impressive.
Can’t find another vid of destroyed live
That's because the band intentionally misspelled the word "destroyed" for their name. If you type into TH-cam something like "Destroyed performing live concert", you won't find this band. Just thought I'd bring this up in case you were not aware.

Maaaaan i was only five that day, or else i would be there 💯
Also somewhat similar to one of marilyn manson's logos, who used it before DoA. Didn't expect to find a DoA fan here though!
Now how the fuck do they do that with 3 people.... those songs definitely have more than 3 instruments playing cause they layer their music
They're holding MIDI controllers. They just push a bunch of different buttons at once lol.
MIDI guitars. first half of their set is loded with over 5000 sounds and samples. the next half the sounds are switched out with other sounds and samples.
I'm pretty sure they have a simple track going and then just use those instruments to make some tweaks. its mostly for show but its still freaking awesome :P
***** oh, ok then. pfft i dont know anything about DJ'ing let alone how Destroid plays
it has to do with the tools that excision and downlink use I think. It could be a possibility
Id rage to this 4 shurrrr
Hope they make a demonstration video of how they do this shit live!
These guys should feauture JDevil on a song. It would be sick to see a vocalist for one song!

Meanwhile at the local powerplant...

I like destroid but this time to destroid 8
They basically have the melody playing on the speakers on some laptop somewhere, KJ sawka does the drums, with downlink and Excision playing the Bass parts. I could be wrong about that, or maybe they are completely faking it and they only do it to look super awesome.
