- A walk to the source of the River Lea at Leagrave via Sharpenhoe Clappers Iron Age hillfort. Thanks to my supporters on Patreon / johnrogers
Our hike into the ancient history of Britain starts at Harlington in Bedfordshire and picks up the John Bunyan trail to the Icknield Way which then takes us through glorious countryside around the Sundon Hills to Sharpenhoe Clappers. We then head south for the outskirts of Luton and the source of the River Lea at Leagrave near the Neolithic henge monument at Waulud’s Bank, believed to be around 5000 years old.

I love these John Rogers walks in the fields, reminds me of the older walks from John, the best country in the world when the sun shines, I love watching these sunshine walks in the dark drab days of Dec, Jan and Feb.

How utterly lovely, John. England is very beautiful, beyond beautiful in this instance. I had a bit of a kip this afternoon and dreamed I asked you to look for the source of the Lea. Then I corrected myself in the dream and said that you'd already done the walk to Amwell - yes, mixing up the New River and Lugh's river. Turned on for my Sunday fix and there you were, going exactly where I'd dreamed about. Magic. And you've published this up just a few days after Lughnasa, one of the great quarter days of the ancient world. Honestly, I'm so thrilled. There's no such thing as coincidence ...
I wish I could have joined you on that walk, John. Back in the 1960s I moved from Sussex to live for several years in Dunstable, just a short distance from where you were, but never saw Harlington or Sharpenhoe Clappers during my time there . Sadly, I shall never get the chance to follow in your footsteps, as I'm now 12,000 miles away with no likelihood of another return trip. There's such an amazing amount of history and scenery in that part of the world, and I miss it terribly.

I felt really excited when I saw your title. I was born in Leagrave 1937 and so close to Leagrave marsh and the River Lea, We played a lot just near the railway bridge and used to go home with buckets of frogspawn, then later frogs n toads.Happy memories indeed. Now this walk. Absolutely stunning, just about the only word I can bring up. Gobsmacking would also suit. All that beauty around me as a child and I have to wait all these years for John Rogers to bring it home to me. Thank you so much

As a resident of Harlington and knowing this area all my life I so enjoyed walking with you from my armchair over fields and paths that I remember from many years ago. I remember a walk from Luton to Sharpenhoe in 1955 and it’s been a joy reliving that and other walks of days gone by.
When I lived in a bus I came up with the theory people echoed the soil they were born on. I came from the Medway valley (shallow chalk) and ended up in Hereford (red clay). Watching this made me realise how beautiful Herefordshire is - I can see South to Monmouthshire and Powys out of my bedroom window, from Sugarloaf Hill (Gloucs SE) to Haybluff (SW), then North to Clee Hill Shropshire from my landing. Blessed.

when I was based at RAF Henlow in Bedfordshire in the 1980s a daily drive was to RAF Halton, going across the Chiltern hills you could see severn counties, such a beautiful early in a morning with the mist and the sunrise, thank you so much for this John😊
I live near the source of the river Lea, happily. It was interesting and lovely to walk the walk with you and see it all through your eyes. Thank you for taking the trouble to video it for us on a hot summer's day :)

A fascinating number of family connections, right out of the gate. I didn't know that John Bunyan had lived in Harlington--one of the places I suspect some of my ancestors lived before 1660. The pavement that people walk around to see Bunyan's memorial at Bunhill Fields was put there after all the headstones were bombed to oblivion. One of the ones not replaced was the grave site of my 3rd great grandfather Robert Finch (1806-1848).
My Style ancestors lived in the Chilterns for at least 400 years, mostly Amersham, Little Missenden and Bledlow Ridge. The topography looks a lot like parts of southwestern Ontario where I grew up--except minus the earthworks!

Super video of an idyllic walk. I lived in Westoning, shown on the sign at the beginning and know the area around Harlington, Streatley and Sharpenhoe really well. It’s a beautiful part of much maligned Bedfordshire.

Sharpenhoe Clappers! What a brilliant name. I totally agree about the sacred nature of rivers, John. This is beautiful countryside indeed. Where I grew up, in E. Yorkshire, we also have chalk and chalk/flint topography, and you can see some similarities, maybe in the character of the people to some extent. You are forgiven for the beer break. Nice one! 🍺👍❤️

You were in the right place to see the source of the Lea where you stood at 30:04. It was dry when you looked down. Immediately underneath that fenced podium with the information board is the end of a concrete culvert with a locked gated fence that would stop you entering. The culvert appears to lead into the direction of the blue tower blocks.
I have seen photos of water flowing out of the culvert. You were unlucky on that occasion! It's probably like going to Thames head to see the source of the Thames. It's dry quite a lot of the time.

What I love about your walks, John, is the fact that I really feel as if I am there, in the moment, as one should feel on a good walk. This was a marvelous one, full of emotion and appreciation of the countryside and history, delivered in your warm, convivial way, and with facts and information to retain. Amazing - I lived in Harlington for a lot of my life and know the area well. Great to see all those places again including Sharpenhoe Clapper and Streatley. I was back there in February / March this year but it was in the middle of Winter and I would never have attempted that walk then. Anyway, thanks for sharing the video. Lovely, like the Detectorists and the music, heaven, also Mortimer and Whitehouse Gone Fishing, they fished on the River Lea. One of these days I’ll go toLondon in the summer to walk some of it. When I was in London in the 60’s I did some London Transport walks by Green line Bus or the Metropolitan Line I think which took me out to the Chilterns, I certainly remember seeing Chequers and the villages of Missenden.

Lovely walk. A friend of my wife had her wedding reception in the village near Sharpenhoe Clappers. That hill is a very imposing presence. The field you walked through was actually oats and not barley. I do remember a few things from my working on a farm 50 years ago!
Quite ironic watching this video, a week late after it went up and one which you'd actually filmed in July, where you're commenting about the 'first burnt grass walk' and 'finally Summer's arrived'... since then of course we've had one of the hottest Summers on record and today it is once again a scorcher.
Either way, wonderful video. As much as I enjoy exploring through urbanised areas and the history of buildings, there's something very "back to early mankind's origins" about walking through countryside like this, those hills and curvatures which would have influenced the lives of, or in some cases created by, our earliest ancestors. And freshly ploughed fields with their neat lines gently bending around natural obstacles, is somehow almost zen line.

Hi John, loved this video. I can't think how many times I've passed Sharpenhoe Clappers without realising the historical significance. Also, I'm almost ashamed to say that, having been born on Leagrave High Street, and having known about the River Lea since I don't know when because of my mum's wartime association with Hoddesdon and surrounding areas, I just never realised that Leagrave was the source of the Lea. Silly me!! I know now.
I've only recently found your videos I'm sad to say, but I've really enjoyed watching them with my mum. I was looking for videos about London to try to help my mum remember places, and that's when I found your videos. Mum's from Camberwell so we've enjoyed your South London walks. My Dad was from Hackney so I've enjoyed your walks around north and east London as a lot of them go through places that I always heard Dad talk about, but I was never quite certain where everywhere was. It blows my mind when you walk around Hackney and surrounding areas thinking that they are streets etc my Dad would have walked around when he was a lad.
I've always been fascinated and excited by London since I was a child making regular visits to grandparents, and it still excites me now in my 60s when I make less frequent visits. I'm especially fascinated by how much green and open space there is in and around London. I'm the only non-Londoner in my family, but I've always felt that my roots are firmly in London given that Mum, Dad and my two sisters are from there. Therefore, all of your walks in and around London mean a lot to me because I feel you're walking through some of my family's history. When you walk around the City and get close to Liverpool Street Station, that's really where my roots are because that's where my Mum and Dad first met in the late 1940's. Equally though, I've loved your walks around the Chilterns because when I was a child we often went for rides around the Dunstable Downs and around the gorgeous countryside of the Beds/Bucks border.
I love the outdoors and exploring so your enthusiasm for getting out and about has really captivated me. I'm physically disabled and in a wheelchair so I'm slightly limited in what I can do and how far I can go, but I love getting out whenever and wherever I can.
I'm sorry for the long post, but I wanted to thank you for all of your videos and for all of the pleasure and interest they've given my Mum and me. We look forward to watching many more!

What a wonderful summer walk John. All the crops starting to ripen. (Oats, not barley). You did the right thing to stop for a couple of pints when you did. We have to go out walking in the morning, before it gets too hot.
