They used to be creative geniuses riding high on all manner of addictions and personal problems, so when they made a skit they knew it was funny and had time to learn it, while modern day SNL is done by committee by people who are not anywhere near as self-destructive or creative, so they are writing and refining them up to the last minute, hence 90% of modern skits have no ending.
Literally every high school band ever... Has their name, album cover and gigs lined up before actually leaning to play...
