Gurgaon: After several years of neglect, the repair on pothole-riddled Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) has finally started and is likely to be completed in six months. The 7km stretch is currently cratered and has broken patches, making the commute a nightmare. Under the project, GMDA will overlay the main carriageway between Ghata Chowk and Vatika Chowk and carry out repairs on the junction along with desalting and restoration of drains.
The redevelopment of SPR was planned in 2019 with several proposals being introduced. The chief minister had directed the authority in August last year to revisit the revamp work. Earlier, the plan comprised construction of eight flyovers and widening of main carriageway to six lanes between Ghata Chowk to NH-8 stretching over 14km, which was scrapped by the chief minister. The authority has now been directed to explore the possibility of building an elevated structure between Vatika Chowk to NH-8 to provide connectivity between Dwarka Expressway and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
However, GMDA has yet to come up with a larger plan and for now, they are planning to make the stretch motorable.
The road repair is estimated to cost the metropolitan authority Rs 7.4 crore and is expected to be finished by July this year, GMDA officials said, adding that they are trying to wrap it up before the timeline.
The work on strengthening and repair of road between Ghata Chowk and Vatika Chowk has been started by the agency. Additionally, they are working on repair and desilting of the surface drain to avert waterlogging and prevent deterioration of road. Th erepairs at junctions will also be carried out. While the timeline for the entire project is set for July, we are hoping to complete recarpeting of the main carriageway by March end,” a senior GMDA official told TOI.
With an average daily traffic volume at 58,000 passenger car unit (PCU), managing the vehicular movement during the repairs is going to be a tough task for GMDA. It is not feasible to block the entire carriageway anf the work cannot be executed at night due to movement of heavy trucks.
“Traffic load on this road is huge since it is a key arterial stretch. However, we will carry out the work from junction to junction with diversion of traffic, without much disruption to vehicular movement,” the official added.
Residents, meanwhile, claimed the repair work has been long overdue. “It is better late than never. This is an extension of Golf Course Road but the authorities have been neglecting it. At present, the condition of the road is really pathetic and it is hard to find non-broken patches. We can only hope this will be an end to our misery,” Mridul Kapoor, a resident of Sector 65, said.
