    I've been following your channel for a while and you make a lot of good points. I only have two ball pythons right now, a male and female, but I want to do right by them. They're in 4ft enclosures, but I don't think they have enough height and their decor could definite be improved. I'm moving house soon and I'm planning upgrading their current 4ftx2ftx18in tall enclosues to 5ftx30x30in fully bioactive setups for them within a few months, including time to let the vivariums run and establish to withstand the trampling that ball pythons are known for. Those animals have survived some of my own bad care, but I'm trying to learn and improve and do right by them before considering any other animals. They're only three years old and I want them to live the majority of their long lives to the fullest. I will never forget the amazement at watching my female dig the first time she got loose substrate (it was coco fiber). That's what it's all about. Giving your animals as many opportunities to exhibit natural behavior as you can. It's incredible and I want to spend my whole life fine tuning and perfecting those conditions. I hope to see reptile keepers continue to turn towards naturalistic and bioactive setups during my lifetime, too. Thanks for the work you do. It's really important.

    Your Day Gecko is just so stinking cute, that permanent smirk! Thanks for sharing the enclosures, you always give me new ideas. I think I heard someone mention on the podcast recently something that I've always thought was important to take into account when getting an animal, which is being able to afford veterinary care for them when they get sick. Around the 22 ish minute mark you make a great point about collecting more animals.
    Think of it like this: a new gecko or other lizard can be $20 plus, a new python or boa can be $40 plus. Properly setting up that animal? If we’re talking PROPERLY setting it up? $1000. Unless you already have everything you need, yea. Hundreds if not over a thousand. Things you can’t always get at the pet store reliably. I could go to several pet store selling critters, selling glass tanks, heat mats and bulbs and fixtures. Any thermostats? Probably not. Critters are easy to accumulate but properly setting them up is much harder for many people.

    Awesome video! I was hoping someone would be able to answer this question a little more in depth. So if you're using cocoa fiber brick substrate on its own, that does need to be changed out or it will develop methane over time?
    Is that just for if you're doing bioactive?
    I've had the same substrate in my crested gecko and tarantula enclosure for a year plus without changing it out and haven't noticed any mold or decay from it. Is it okay to keep this schedule or should it be changed more often?

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching, glad you enjoyed it! Coconut fibre alone is OK to use for long periods of time provided it’s not in a biactive set up. If you use coconut fibre alone in a bio active system, it will eventually produce methane and sulfur. But if you’re using it in a non-bioactive system, and spot cleaning when necessary, You should be fine

    I really like those setups, really inspirational! Putting heat lamps and UVB lights on different timers is actually a really great idea, I might try to implement that. And is the ball on a stick used for target training? I am currently trying to "train" my corn snake to associate a signal with feeding time but I'm not sure if it's working lol
    And I totally agree on the reptile keeping comment! People seem to amass large amounts of reptiles just because they can, with little to no regard to their animals' well being. There seems to be a prevalent mentality in the hobby of "the bare minimum is good enough", which I just cannot get behind.
    That is why I will probably never be able to own more than a handful of snakes, because every snake I own will get an enclosure that is at least as long as they are with appropriate lighting (including UVB) and enrichment. I would have submitted a video of my corn snake terrarium but unfortunately it seems like I am a bit late lol

    ive always wanted a snake my whole life but I couldn’t until about 6 years ago i got my first python, my parents are strictly Catholic and stereotype snakes and other animals very often (in the bible the devil disguised himself as a snake) so of course they were off put by the idea of having a snake in the household. Shortly after i finally got a regular ball python after begging literally EVERYDAY. I had him for about 2 years and he was a sweet little guy, never bit or pounced at me, always ate when it was feeding time. The one time i wasn’t home i guess he had escaped because he had lifted up the top (it was a 60 gallon fish tank) and i also didn’t have clips to put on it at the time) he was gone until about 8 hours later when my stepdad had found him and grabbed the poor thing by the neck and crushed his head, i was grounded and was told I wasn’t allowed to ever have another pet again, seeing videos like this makes me remember how much i wish I could’ve cared for him, and if i had a enclosure like this I probably still would’ve had him because these are just so much more secure. I wish to get another shot at having a python and maybe even a boa! want another chance to do it right this time (without the shitty parents)

      Good luck with it! I mention the brick in this video, the original one I made I used started to bubble because the humidity is so high in this enclosure. So I re-did it using a more durable glue (water proof white glue) and it’s working much better. If your break is going in a low humidity enclosure, it’s probably totally fine! But if you are putting it in a very humid enclosure like I did, I would recommend going with a waterproof glue. I explain it somewhere in the middle of this video

    Have you experienced an electrical fire yet? how do you plug all that equipment in? are you piggybacking power strips?

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Electrical fires are generally caused by old/faulty outlets or cables/cords so provided everything is in good condition, there is no risk of a fire. I am not pigging backing power bars or overloading the circuit. I don't live in that place anymore but from memory I had about 8 or 10 outlets in that room running on a 15-20 amp circuit breaker. Even though it seems like a lot to have plugged in, most of the equipment is low amperage. At most that room would pull 5-8 amps I think

    • @johnsonandson7772
      @johnsonandson7772 ปีที่แล้ว

      did you have the 8 to 10 outlets installed? I've been researching how to safely power my reptile room build. My room only has 3 outlets I'm using 3 power strips with surge protection but was worried about using 3 way extention cords on the power strips so I can have 3 uvb lights on one timer and 3 led on another.

    • @AnimalsatHomePodcast
      @AnimalsatHomePodcast  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnsonandson7772 no, I didn’t have them installed. This was actually in an apartment building, so I was just fortunate that it was set up with lots of outlets during construction. If you can, I will consult with an electrician. That would probably be your best bet!

    Rant ahead sorry
    "Reptile care is expensive" wish I heard this 10 years ago and frequently said now, at this point I'm not interested in owning reptiles anymore, my two current snakes kinda ruined it for me, Reptiles (mostly snakes and small lizards) are always pushed as a cheap alternative to dogs/cats/birds, I'm poor, and snakes are definitely the least budget friendly animals, yes they're hardy and can deal with the minimum but their food is expensive, their vet care is expensive, their heating is expensive,etc.
    My king is sitting in a Aivituvin turtle/lizard enclosure (equivalent to 51 gal) and uses a heat emitter because no one talks about the price of this stuff, no one can say "do your research" when there's no information in the first place, people usually get small snakes as their first snake and that's fine everything is cheap but the cost of everything skyrockets, it's worse if you live in the city and don't have easy access to non-pesticide covered branches/leaves, My corn snake has to wait another month before he gets a new enclosure because again, no one likes to talk about the price of things they talk about how pretty their 150 gallon bioactive communal 7ft snake enclosure is.
    You're really the first person I've heard to say that reptiles isn't cheap.
