  • I had the honour of meeting one of the greatest drummers of our time - Dr. Steve Gadd.
Here I have the pleasure of chatting with him after an incredible "Steve Gadd Band" performance at Ronnie Scott's, London on October 5th 2016.
In this Drum Quest Musical Musings exclusive interview, Steve shares some of his drumming thoughts and memories with me, and of course, answers the Drum Quest question; "what makes a good drummer?"
It was privilege to chat with such a legend, and hear his words of wisdom and kind advice.
Also, great to be joined by drummer Ian Thomas partway through.
    Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sharing this conversation. I first saw Steve Gadd in a clinic situation around 1987. Saw him on the "Rhythm Of the Saints Tour" with Paul Simon, 3 percussionist, Michael Brecker (rip) and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as well as on his "mission from Gadd" tour in 2005. The reason Steve is so admired and justly so, is shown on this video. His demeanor and kindness, his generosity, his calm encouragement. Steve isn't just one of the greatest drummers of his generation, he's a GREAT person and a living example of how you can be successful and sincere. Steve was the first to teach me "it's not a destination, it's a journey." Best wishes on your drumming/musical journey Laura.

I LOVE that you give him the title he rightfully deserves - Dr. Especially with being credited an honorary degree from Berkeley. Gadd is my Hero, he is my drum god I would have built shrine for him if it wasn't against my religion, ha! What an honor to meet the man himself!

You're welcome. When I met him at Ronnie Scott's I wrote him a card expressing my admiration and adulation of him - since I was 12 or so when my drum teacher introduced me to him via the Leprechaun album.Do you know that one ? By Chick Corea ? There's a great solo by him on an album called Me, Myself An Eye by Charles Mingus - on a track called Three Worlds Of Drums - with two other drummers. Also an album called In The Beginning by Hubert Laws is amazing too ! Are you a Weather Report fan ?

Great job Steve Gadd is at the top for me
    Great interview
Steve Gadd has had such an Influence on my drumming
I will never stop studying his decades of work
If you are a drummer and in a bad mood or tired play “way back home” that will snap you out of it.
    Thank you!!
