- Ridiculously quick and easy tip to help with Jointer Setup. If you're having issues with snipe or bowed cuts, this will quickly solve your problems. Get your Jointer making perfect cuts in less than 5 minutes. No tools needed to get this setup properly.
You have no idea how much this helped me. Solved all my issues!! Thank you.
Please add my thanks to the others here for this clear, concise explanation. Thanks to this lesson I've been able to move beyond the straight edge and feeler gauge, and dial in my jointer with test cuts on scrap wood even as a first-timer. This is an outstanding bit of content.
This video is awesome! I spent weeks trying to get my Grizzly G0814 dialed in, with no luck. I followed your video and had that thing working flawlessly in two minutes. Thanks for “dumbing” it down for me.
Thats awesome Mark, glad it helped!
Will try this today, I have not seen any explanations on youtube that make it as clear as you do. Thanks!
Worked for me after about 5 mins of trial and error. The best part of this was the (I guess obvious in hindsight) observation that taper means too high, snipe means too low. That’s what was missing in other videos of the same type. A couple of taps up and down and I’m there. Thanks.
I just bought a jointer and I had no idea you even had to set anything, haha. This was a great instructional video for a total newbie, thanks man
Glad it was helpful!
Easy Peasy!! I was so frustrated I just table sawed and sanded! On my day off I'm going to get the jointer reset in minutes!! Thanks 👍 !!
You put more info in this 5 minutes than all the other jointer set up vids that are half an hour. I actually have the same 0858 so this was exactly what I needed to dial in Jaba. My daughter's name is Leia btw lol
lol at Leia thats incredible
Thank you .been struggling with my jointer you are really helpful. Saved my day.
Nice tip. I've got a 6" jointer that I haven't used for 6 years now, an will use your tip when I get my house and small shop built.
Its such an easy tip that no one every mentions
Your videos are perfect in so many ways. So simple and it fixed the problem instantly. Please continue to make them.
So I found your small workshop walkthrough video then what you need to start this venture. Finally this video that talks about jointer set up. It just so happens that I scored a floor model jointer from a friend who has other things I need. But first I need to clean my shop. Thanks for the tips. Subbed
thanks for the sub
Thanks for the great tip! Kept getting snipe at the end of my board and watched this video and finally realized that the outfeed table was the culprit!
awesome glad it helped fix it
Solid explanation. Great video and editing. Thanks for all ofnyour help.
Hey brother. Thank you for the video. I needed this to get my jointer fine tuned! I'm also in South Carolina. I really love your channel! Peace.
I am having a taper on longer boards. Watching your video explains it so anyone can understand what is happening. THANK YOU!!
I really thank you, i m beginner and i was broken my head thinking what was wrong with my planer because the "bit" in the end of the edge, now i know the solution. Thank you from Spain.
Thanks you! This was driving me crazy!!! You solved it for me... getting perfect joints now 👍👍👍
Thank you. Seriously, so helpful
I have been cutting a taper and I never knew why. Thanks for making this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Great tip man! I just got my 1st hand me down jointer. Looking forward to fine tuning and getting her running good. This helps, thanks!
Good tips! I had to align in-feed and out-feed tables on the same jointer this week and this really. helped in the final stages - thanks
I love the way you keep it simple in your videos. Can you do one like this jointer video but for the planer? I've seen other videos on planer adjustment but I can't seem to apply the knowledge to reduce snipe.
Thanks, I can add it to the list. Unfortunately you can never completely get rid of snipe on small lunchbox planers. But it can be minimized I always keep my pieces 3-4" long until after I'm done with milling.
@@Lincolnstww that’s a fantastic suggestion that I’ll apply to the next project. Thanks
@@djfubarius Awesome let me know how it goes
Trying to not buy new jointer, hope this helps. 3rd video. Thanks for the help, will update!
awesome. good luck
Thanks. Quick and easy to remember.
Great video very helpful on this subject
Great video.. hi from Australia
Thank you!
I struggled for hours today trying to edge joint boards on my new jointer. I'm getting about a 1/32 gradual cup. Both ends are flush the last few inches but the middle section of all the boards have a gap. Thank you for this video. Now I can't wait to try again tomorrow.
Hope it helped. If you still are having issues its either your technique or your beds aren't co planer
@@Lincolnstww It was technique. Thanks again.
Can either of u elaborate? The only thing I can think of that might still not give a good cut with a correctly set outfeed is putting a lot of pressure on the 1st half the board that's already gone through but even then if the table is set right there shouldn't be any movement, so I'm slightly confused by what u mean by technique. Thanks
i cant believe i been following you for this long lol, any way you could possibly review that cutech jointer that you had in one of ur videos?
So much for the 0.003" higher blades rule. I set my Craftsman 6" jointer blades a smidge high, so that it pulls the material about 1/4" forward with each blade catching on the wood during rotation (rotating by hand). But this is obviously too high, and not a good method because with the blades slightly higher than the outfeed table, there is dramatic snipe at the end of the wood, no matter how flat you push the board through. After watching this video I'm assuming that putting the blades near 0.000" to the outfeed table is a better starting point, especially because the vibration and run-out of the cutter head on the old bearings could create a deeper cut.
Great explanation, thanks.
Perfect for us beginners
As always, you helped me a lot 😏🤜🤛 THX
Great tip thanks
This is great. I have the same jointer and am trying to use the same approach, but having trouble making fine adjustments to the outfeed table height using the adjustment lever. It seems impossible to smoothly move it a hair up or down. Were you using any particular technique when adjusting the height at the 3:35 mark? Thanks -- love the channel!
Hi John. I have a bench top when and totally screwed it up. Can you please write to me about what the height of the infeed should be relative to the cutter head because I think I may have an issue with that as well. Thank you.
If you want to joint one face but your board is too wide, can you run it through once and then turn the board around and run it through again in order to catch the half that didn't get jointed?
Great info! Maybe someday I will have one someday..
hopefully so!
That saved my day!
I cannot adjust the height of the outfeed table, only the blades. How should I set the blades against the outfeed table? Thanks.
My planks get more thinner on the feed side, almost taking up the shape of a V.
I was given a big jointer similar to yours. I have some small pieces of timber maybe 8 x 12 inches I wan to true up however when I try to do a pass it chattered and jumped around on me. I can’t figure out why
how do you actually adjust the outfeed table. in my manual it says to adjust the blades themselves to gain or lose height and says not to adjust gibs as they are factory set and should be fine
Great video ,just wanted to ask if you or anyone here may have any idea ,I am new to using planner ,And have a question ,Does the outfeed and infeed table need to have a even gap where the blade is ,On my machine one side is 40mm gap and the other is 45mm , does this really matter so long as the blade is at even Hight >? to the table ? I am little confused . Please Help !!!
is that a grizzly? I was thinking about getting the jointer planer 12" set up., I didnt know if you had any thoughts on that? It would be my first jointer and planer. I dont have too much room to have both individually
perfect ! Thanks
Thanks.
wow! Really thanks bro
Good info.
If the jointer isn't set up correctly it is difficult to get the straight piece of wood that is required to set up the outfeed table!
It is easier to use a piece of straight 1/4 thick plywood on its edge to set up the outfeed table. The plywood will feed straight into the cutter block from the infeed table whereas a not straight piece of timber could be moving up and down due to the irregular edge (bowed, taperd etc.) on the infeed table.
John, you don't happen to have a video showing how to get the tables coplanar do you?
Sadly I dont, - I use a good straight edge (veritas) and a flash light + a lot of patience
That intro song tho!!!
Ok, im kinda losing my mind trying to make my king benchtop function properly.
Outfeed not adjustable.
Def getting taper/bow
The infeed os far from stable since if i lock iny depth and attempt to raise or lower, itll push infeed out of coplanar. How the heck do i get co planar with an infeed that cant be properly locked in?
I had straight sides, now i dont.
I am going bonkers.
can you tell me why when i joint a board it is tapered from side to side,,,my fence is excatly 90 degrees to the table,,,i have done everything you said in this video but i am still getting a taper cut from side to side,,and we are talking about a board that is i 1/2 wide,,,
Sounds like your tables aren't parallel to the blade.
Does your DeWalt planer have a StarWars pun? Was thinking you need a sand crawler pun but I think you’re more clever at these puns. Wood-sandcrawler... Wooden Sand Crawler. Wood Crawler. Might read well if it’s surrounded by a sandcrawler outline.
It doesn't. I've been stuck on that one for awhile. I bounced around sand crawler but could never get anything punny enough. It will come eventually. I just added 3 others that will show up in the next couple videos
Very helpful instruction. I ordered my first ever jointer about a month ago with another month for delivery.
@@Lincolnstww "Plane-mé Amidala?" I'll see myself out.
Your jointer has straight knives? The outfeed table/bed on spiral head jointers are fixed, you can't raise or lower them.
This process then is harder.
I have a spiral head. I've never heard of a jointer with a fixed table. That wouldn't make much sense. What kind do you have?
@@Lincolnstww I have a Carbatec, in Australia, they're the same as Grizzly machines. On ours, the outfeed table is fixed at the height of the cutter head.
@@steelwood74 bummer - that absolutely sucks. Mine is easily adjusted
I think this video may be corrupted now. The video and audio are both very choppy. I haven’t had this issue with any of your other videos yet.
I have same jointer set it to 1/32nds and she’s a cream puff
First time ever trying to do this. Would have been helpful to see exactly how you loosen and adjust the table. Seeing the end result doesn’t actually help at all.
Every jointer is different - read your instruction manual.
NOICE!!
HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHY DIDNT I TRY THIS!
Planner - Chewbacut
very nice
