I am very happy to know that Bob's visit brought new ideas to the Australian beekeepers. Here in Brazil we try to create designs that are simple, efficient and effective in the creation and management of stingless bees. Congratulations for the video and the whim to build their cases.
Thanks Maxwell, that's the sort of comment I like to hear and it makes the effort of producing these clips worthwhile. When you say "down south", where do you mean?
Wonderful how to video sir. Keep up the good work. I'm planning to make one, but I can't find the plans on the internet, can you please email me a pdf of the plan or a link to download the plans. Thank you in advance. God bless
Saludos desde Nicaragua muchas gracias por compartir sus conocimientos con los que amamos las abejas, gracias esto nos motiva a seguir adelante con nuestras abejas.
Very good video! In my place we use the INPA Box with only one hole in the nest.So I don't understand why do you use entrance holes in every partition of the box. Can you please explain it? Thank you!
Gracias por ser tan desprendido y por el trabajo que realice en favor del planeta, me parece que su trabajo es un gran aporte para salvar a las abejas nativas en el mundo dada la importancia de las mismas.
Thanks for the great video. How do i go about getting the plans. I have heaps of native bees in my garden at the moment and would like to give them a home/keep them there.
In the first 60 seconds of the video I say it is 36mm pine from the sides of an old waterbed. The critical measurement is the inside measurement so any timber around about 36-40mm thick will do...BUT...do not use pine if this will be used outdoors.
I live in Brisbane . I being looking for untreated timber about 36-40mm thick and no one have them. have you got any place that you think they should have. Cheers
I used recycled pine...from a waterbed so no pine smell at all. I also coated inside with melted beeswax. The pine is OK for me as this hive sits in another insulated box so it is not exposed to that elements...if it was I couldn't use pine.
Heya, great practical instructions - thank you 😊 just wondering... is the separator a commercial item you bought (if so can u pls tell me where?) or did u make it too?
Thank you for the feedback Kathy. The separators were made at the time by "Bob The Beeman" from Brisbane...not sure if he is still making and selling them. You can google "Bob the Beeman" and check his website.
Well, in Austrália have the austroplepeia, it's like the american plepeia, but in America have much more stingless bees species, and the smaller in the world is the "Lambe Olhos" (Leurotrigona muelleri), whith only 2 mm.
So does that mean that if I have several t-shirts with plenty of paint on them, I am in good shape to make a start on one of these? The paint was from redecorating our home of almost 11 years here in this house, 17 years in Manchester UK. Time to move home now... so I've splashed some paint, messed up some t-shirts ;) and we are dreaming of vegies in the garden and Native bees and Apis Bees too for our pollination and some proper honey. I noticed you're in Cats Territory. My sister in law was born there. My F.I.L was in the RAAF. I didn't think TC's were supposed to be able survive down there? Glad you've had something to say about it. Any Hive Beetle issues? I hope not. I've never used a router so that will be fun learning. Any suggestions on getting an old water bed? Gumtree is one that comes to mind, any others Ian...? Thanks for the time it took you to create all these vids. I hope you are well and wish you a Happy New Year and a wonderful 2014 mate. All the best David Trees
I liked the idea of using separators handle on acrylic plates, will also adopt this model here in my meliponary. The changes did not like - (just my personal opinion) - the turning of corners are outside of the handles, I found unnecessary. Here forbade the cracks with duct tape because it is more practical. Another thing I find unnecessary for Brazilian bees are friezes of internal loops, not sure if this would effect some for the bees there too. =>continues
OK, my missus is in for a shock when she find no bed, I've used her credit card to buy a router and bits and I have some suitable T Shirts lined up. Divorce immenent, who will go referee for me?
+missy sparkles Missy, I have heard of course you can. Melissa from Sydney Stingless Bees has both Native and European Bees in her yard. Feel free to call her as she is very approachable about these little critters and will be happy to provide any advice you need. Just Google her. Happy Beekeeping!!
It looks great. It's interesting to see so many different designs for Australian native bee hives.

Is there any reason that the pine couldn't be coated, on the outside, with something like Estapol?
Great video thanks so much

Are hives really this small in Australia? Are the pygmy bees? :)
Pee-Wee-Bee's?
.Same thing from Mexico down..

Left handed knitted sock heel
Honey bees form huge hives, 35-60,000+
Australian Native bees wouldnt be uncommon to form hives of only a few thousand
Love from kerala ♥️
Iam learning thank you 😊

I want to listen to you not the music. Why do people insist on putting music in an instructional video.
