RIQUEWIHR - DECLARED THE MOST SPECTACULAR VILLAGE IN THE WORLD - FAIRYTALE ARCHITECTURE
Riquewihr is a town located on the Alsace Wine Route in eastern France. Its cobbled streets are punctuated by half-timbered winegrowers' shops and tasting rooms. Winegrowers' tools and a restored kitchen are on display in the 16th-century Maison de Vigneron. The Dolder Tower from 1291 houses the Dolder Museum and centuries-old weapons. The Tour des Voleurs is a former 14th-century prison where instruments of torture are kept.
Between the Vosges Mountains and the Alsace plain, Riquewihr is a medieval town, located in the heart of the Alsatian vineyards, classified among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France".
For centuries, this magnificent town has combined the quality of its architecture with that of its wines, recognized throughout the world, hence its name "Pearl of the Alsatian vineyard".
Riquewihr, one of the must-see places to visit in Alsace, is an "open-air museum" that has preserved its authenticity, behind its walls that only the vines now besiege.
Riquewihr, made up of a very old urban fabric, is made up of, among other things:
half-timbered houses from the 13th to the 18th century, closely adjoining,
the Dolder, a preserved city gate dating from the 13th century,
which form an exceptional architectural ensemble.
The Alsatian house type finds its most accomplished expression in Riquewihr by offering all the possible variations of sculpted half-timbering, oriel windows, interior courtyards decorated with old wells and fountains.
Museums allow you to discover the historical and cultural heritage of the Ribeauvillé region:
the Tour des Voleurs (former prison of Riquewihr),
the 16th century winemaker's house,
the Dolder tower (former defensive gate of the 13th century)
Admirably flowery in spring and summer, the city takes on its Christmas colors during the Advent period, in a unique atmosphere that combines the magic of Christmas with Alsatian traditions.
