      Interestingly, Magic: The Gathering was the exact same way. Early on, creatures were awful, while there were plenty of ridiculously powerful instants, sorceries, and artifacts. Even after over 25 years of incremental increases to creature power level and decreases to noncreature power level, almost all the most powerful cards in the game are noncreatures.

      So I haven't played Yugioh in 15+ years. Ritual cards and the Egyptian God cards were the newest thing when I stopped playing. It's interesting watching these videos and seeing how much the game has changed since then. A lot of these banned old cards were already great back then when the game was a lot slower and combos were fairly short and limited. These days it sounds like the game revolves around rapidly performing large combos that drop boss monsters onto the field and/or do massive amounts of damage in a single turn. The fact that cards originally designed to just speed up a slow game or give a significant but temporary advantage are now banned because they're broken in such a fast paced game really drives home how much the overall gameplay has changed.
      Take Change of Heart for example. Back in the day, for it to really be used to full effect you had to at least have a decent monster on the field and arguably two or more counters set in your back field so that you could take your opponent's best monster, probably activate one counter to prevent them from negating CoH, then attack, and activate another counter to keep them from stopping you with something like Negate Attack or Mirror Force. That setup almost always took no less than 2 turns, often more since you and your opponent would be hitting each other with minor plays that would disrupt or delay each others strategy.

    • @antusFireNova64
      @antusFireNova64 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      It's a constant in most card games.
      Hearthstone had absolutely broken shit in beta.
      Pokémon didn't have the distinction between trainer cards that can be "item" (play without restrictions) or "support" (much stronger than item cards but you can only use one of them per turn), and some super strong cards that now are supporters didn't have the once per turn restriction, plus energy removal cards were just broken.
      When a card game is its infacy, it's natural that stuff is gonna be very unbalanced, since the game designers still need to figure out what kind of stuff is stong or weak in their game

      That's the problem when you have a card game that has over 20 years. When you want to add a new spell/trap, you must optimalize it with 10k other cards already in the game so it wouldn't broke the game completely. The ban list exist probably because 18-20 years ago a card like Change of Heart wasn't a big deal like that. But in the era of summoning 30 monsters in one turn, this card would probably destroy the whole game. Of course you can't optimize every card

    For people that don't understand why in Yugioh drawing cards is way too good compared to other Card games the answer is simple. There are no resources here. What I mean is that you can summon monsters and play cards if you can as many as you can no problem. In games like Hearthstone, Magic, Pokemon you have limited resources per turn to do stuff you want. Not here.

      Unless you're being sarcastic. This is why:
      1) is a trap. You must wait a turn to use it.
      2) you go neutral in card advantage. Use/discard 1 to draw 1=0.
      3) Unless you go gimmicky. Is kind of stupid to even have this card on your deck in the first place.
      A gimmick example could be a situation where you need to/your opponent shuffle(s) your deck.
      Or either player activates a card that sends a specific card to the top of your deck.
      After that. Then you can activate this trap.
      Do you see the problem now?
      As duel logs says very often. Is too convoluted and niche to get a real advantage from this card.

      They're not screwing themselves. It's pretty basic create a problem and sell a solution strategy. Your cards going to GY was a problem, then they printed cards that targets the GY. Afterwards, made cards that will avoid the GY and pull them out of play. Then they printed cards that will use the cards that are supposedly out-of-play so now you have an optional 3rd hand. They need to evolve the game if they want to avoid duplicating card effects.
      Foolish Burial was not a bad card but was released too early for it's intended purpose. It should've been released along with the GY targeting cards so players didn't get confuse on why the card was made.

      Of course I wasn't referring to Pot of Greed which would have a 99,999% of representation changing literally nothing. I just see cards like change of heart or Brain control (which for konami needed an errata for whatever reason). They sure give you a +1 but they won't be mained in each single deck. Maybe sided? Can be, but, considering they do target, they become automatically suboptimal to TTT for 2nd turn plays.
      So what can the change of heart unban may bring? A valid second turn option for a budget prospective. But as we know well, Konami hates them (see Called By The Grave). The banlist became just an item to remove budget options and keep a higher interest towards new broken cards (that actually pull together effects of banned cards: see TTT who is Forceful Sentry/Pot of greed/Better change of heart).

But I respect your point: having no costs it's definitely a perk although TTT for a slightly more convoluted way to resolve it rewards you with picking one from three degenerate and banned effects.
      For the last point, you must apologize me if I can't understand entirely your words cause of my poor English. You are basically saying that bringing out the economical side of adding and removing cards from the banlist is silly right? I don't think I'm the only one bringing out this topic and before laughing at my argumentations you should bring solid explanations about how the banlist (and the new staples) history made this game more enjoyable, fair to budget strategies and balanced. May I remember you how the zoo/draco era ended? And what we have now? Bunch of opponent's turn interactions and removals and a semi-masterpiece that has the perk to be splashable when your main combo fails. So what was wrong with zoos and masterpiece if we landed on the same level of degeneracy many many sets realising later?
      And sure new staples are meant to be bought and played if you want to compete on a regional level, I'd just like to see more cards that realistically may let you play against an established board (besides UCT+ ruler).

The card is played in every format that it is legal in and is considered one of the best ways to dig. Even though it essentially blocks you from drawing any new cards until you get through the top two. However discarding instead would litteraly break magic as a game. You can just chain draw spells without any limitation, so they are just thinning out your deck without any cost. In magic thinning out your deck with scry and draw effects costs you mana and therefore does not allow you to do other things.

      All Thirst cards let you draw three cards and then discard two. (They also give the option of discarding only one if its a specific type of card)
      The difference is that they all cost 3 mana. A zero mana card with that effect would certainly be broken in magic, but at 3 mana they only see some play.

    Great video! It seems that the way Konami has watered down powerful banned cards was by creating new cards with weaker effects. Having this, what they did to Chaos Emperor Dragon was disrespectful, Sky Scourge Norleras and Demise King of Armageddon kind of solved the problem. I rather have CED banned as a Legendary card, with its status as the most broken card ever created than have it unbanned and stripped of its God-like effect.

    • @Goblin_Hands
      @Goblin_Hands 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, it could have simply said you cannot activate effects afterwards, or even before, but both is certainly disrespectful. All major Erratas Konami has done are either unneccesary, too harsh, or too late.

    • @Goblin_Hands
      @Goblin_Hands 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Konami is terrible at Errata's.
      Brain Control could simply have "its effects are negated, and it cannot attack directly" seeeing as how brain controlled people in a trace tend to forget basic things, or in the case of the anime, would only be an extension of the controller and the controller wouldn't know everything about the target's potential (Marik possessing Joey, Ginyu body snatching Goku, etc). At the time, this restriction would have been minor where it would still see use, but nowadays it needs no restriction since taking control of an opponent's monster is great, but not overpowered since the card isn't searchable, and decks prefer going 1st.
      Crush Card never needed to give the opponent the choice to mill monsters, if they wanted it to be like the anime, it should have been all, or the user's choice of 3; that still would have been a nerf to cutting the 3 turn check. No Damage addition is unnecessary, but would have also been sufficient enough by itself, since most decks since before the Errata are filled with spells and weak monsters used as combo pieces/hand traps, so full-powered CCV has never really been as powerful since Synchros dominated.
      Ring of Destruction only needed a fix to prevent drawing with the opponent, because Draws slowed down the tournaments. The "you take damage first" is fine enough, and it still would not see play because players using traps in slower decks use the Solemn cards first, which all require life points, which is why a potentially better card than Ring of Destruction, Blazing Mirror Force does not see play, even though it can single-handedly steal games being close to a fusion of Magic Cylinder and Mirror Force, and affect the opponent's entire field. The "less than or equal to their LP" only means it is unplayable mid-late game, unlike Blazing Mirror Force, but it might see a bit more play in burn decks, simply because burn decks favor Mystic Mine which prevents attacks. Horray for degenerate burn decks!
      Sinister Serpent was almost never great and never needed an Errata or to be banned imo. It was banned because in slow formats with cards with discard effects Graceful Charity, and Snipe Hunter, users could slowly regain their hands back. Banishing it after a single use is unjustified.
      Dark Magician of Chaos also never needed an Errata. Like Magician of Faith, it's only powerful in formats with powerful generic spell cards like Pot of Greed and Graceful Charity, both of which have been banned since 2006 iirc. It possibly would have seen play in Dark Magician decks with "Dedication Through Light and Darkness", but the nerf killed any potential it had.
      Sangan possibly needed an Errata a long time ago, but currently the Errata is almost pointless, as Sangan at full power would search hand traps or Tour Guides anyways, or can be bypassed by cards like the Tuner Crusadia Arboria with Almiraj to go into Halquifibrax, since Arboria doesn't activate. I'd say its errata might help slow Burning Abyss decks down a bit, but they don't need/use Sangan anymore anyways. Witch of the Black Forest also has an Errata and better effect, but it not being a Tour Guide target means it'll probably never see play since both Sangan and Witch require themselves to be on the field, aka Normal Summoned/Set, far too slow even at full power. Exodia decks, which were notorious for abusing Witch and Sangan, always had Emissary of the Afterlife for the same purpose while these were banned, and it never used them because the game advanced early on to become too fast, so they were only powerful in even earlier formats, or in Sangan's case, when Crush Card was actually threatening.
      Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon perhaps needed a HOPT for a long time, but is not really the balance Dragon decks need, with cards like Seyfert, CED Armageddon, Brotaur, Levianeer, Guardragons, coupled with generic engines like Halqufibrax, it wasn't the reason these decks can vomit out huge boards, but the card might still see use solely in Red-Eyes decks, so perhaps this Errata is fair, though it is admittingly far too late. Perhaps the card should have been Errata'd first before ever being limited in the first place.
      Exchange of the Spirit has a fair Errata; it's purpose was always unfun, degenerate and unhealthy for the game, similar to Last Turn, so it never needed to come off the banlist or need an Errata, but if it had to get one (as in if Konami wanted every card off the list), it deservingly gets one that makes it nearly unplayable.
      Makyura the Destructor similarly never needed an Errata, it should have just stayed banned, since it once again was used solely in degenerate decks and nothing more. No deck is going to run a Makyura engine just to activate a single trap faster, it was only used when the entire deck was mostly powerful traps limited in use because they were slower traps, not spells.
      So the last 4 cards did not need an Errata, or got it way too late, and the rest were a joke. Cards that need an Errata ASAP will not get one: Halquifibrax (too generic), Apoloussa (HOPT or non generic), Borreload Savage (too generic), Dragoon/Anaconda (actually, it's not bad since it requires DM and Red-Eyes to be mained, but combined with these others it is nasty; Anaconda could receive a nerf to require a non-effect non Token or both requirements to be DARK), Buster Whelp (equipped only to a Buster Blader, etc), and basically every card on the banlist if the end goal is to eliminate it.

    • @uvboni8377
      @uvboni8377 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Goblin_Hands great analysis! Now I understand that in many cases, the way Konami has done erratas are, for lack of a better word, useless. It's like if they are blindly making them, without knowing were the game is headed to. Many of the erratas that you mentioned, had it not being applied, cards would not see play even with their former effects in the current state of the game and very likely in the future... thus now that they are official, many of them that used to be cool will forever be locked in the unused card pool. Don't know of they will try and fix all the cards in the forbidden list that are ridiculously poweful, so that in the future the Ban List will only serve to balance Tiers in Tournaments instead of forever forbidding cards such as Pot of Greed, Graceful, etc...

    Such a great idea for a series, you're the only yugituber I can listen to explaining stuff like this. Can't wait for the rest of the series!

    i really wanted a series like this, it explains detail by detail adn also is a good start for new players trying to understand more of the game.

      honestly you will hate it . the whole thing has become stupidly broken to the point where it has sucked the fun out of the game completely its either loose right away or win right away . all the back and forth fun has completely gone also you feel like a dick if you do win because most cards have dick effects . don't bother or play duel link ( still broken but is a bit better )

    i’ve always like the dynamic of 1 forceful sentry. allowing for a low amount, but still possible, kinda “recon” effect to plan ahead.

    A big reason why drawing cards in strong in YGO is because the game does not have any mana limitations

    It's kinda funny seeing him explain how Chicken Game, Pseudo Space and Terraforming can be abused over a year before Master Duel released. Now it's used for Exodia and that combination of cards is incredibly broken

    I'm eager to see how this series continues, I just really enjoy getting to understand how certain cards are said to be broken but at first glance they look kinda weak. Keep this fresh content up man 👌

    I like this style of video, however, when you've got cards like Pot of Greed/Graceful Charity and then cards like Delinquent Duo/Confiscation, you could probably just group them together. Saves you time from bringing up the previous cards on the list to compare when they are both doing almost the same thing.

    • @TheDuelLogs
      @TheDuelLogs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah true I did think about that too when making this one. Ultimately I decided to do them separately for catalogue purposes. Like if I wanted a reminder on a card in the future, I could come back to one of my videos and just go to the time stamp and basically get all the info I need.

    • @TheMapleTurtle
      @TheMapleTurtle 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheDuelLogs yeah that's valid. Very interesting to think of how to balance cards. In Graceful Charity's place I would probably have a card that you draw the 3 cards but you have to banish 3 cards from your hand.

    Mirage of Nightmares brings back good memories. I remember wrecking kids at my local library tournaments by playing macro cosmos or the continuous spell with the same effect, and dumping my hand over and over until I start slamming Gren Maju Da Eiza at like 7k attack.
