I understood the Hans part as a look into grooming since she met him when she was 7 years old and took care of her and made her feel that he was her friend since then because he's so entitled that he thought, a 7 freakingyearold child, wanted to be with a grown man.
I loved the romance with Ryker because she chose him. No woman ever chooses anything for herself in Garner County, so I don't really think it was just thrown in there.

I 100% agree with you. Ryker and Tierney are adorable together.

I loved this book and it made it to my favorites for 2019. I thought it was a great YA version, in a way, of The Handmaid's Tale. The only reason I rated it lower is that the whole plot hinges on a very weak premise i.e "not being able to talk about the Grace Year." I love talking about this book since it is one of my favorites!
I think the whole thing with Kirsten vs Tierney is tradition vs modernity which I why a lot of the girls follow Kirsten. The water was poison because of the algae growing in the well, which I don't think the County actually put that into the water. What happened in the grace year to the women just fed into the myth that the men were using to dominant the women. For me the romance was all about her choosing who she loved, I think that whole part was important because being able to choose is what women are not able to do. I think you're right that there will be a sequel to this book! I am hoping that there is another book in this world because it was so interesting!

The interlude of you doing that TikTok dance had my dying! You're so cute! I felt very similarly to you - I was SO into this book until the romance started. Then I felt like it kind of went downhill. It had so much potential!

I just finished the grace year. It's the first YA dystopian book I've ever read, but I loved it. I do agree with the Hans part being kind of off as he was made up to be this nice guy and then bam he's just the bad guy. I didn't feel like the story needed romance, but I actually loved how it was included in the story combined with how it ended even though it was sad (But I expected that would happen as soon as it was clear they would have a thing). The bullying this, even though extreme, I actually to find kind of realistic. Not that I see girls swinging axes at each other and are forced to lay naked on the ground. But the scenario of everyone following one particular girl, who they all know is bad news (and honestly might not even like the girl) is a very real thing and I related as a bystander to that part of the story. It was written very well. Even though there were some things that didn't make sense, the frustration of the mindset by these people, anger I held for some of the characters, the cold and warmth I was able to feel through reading this story made it one of my favorites.

I figured they made the threat of banishing their siblings as a way to make them work to survive & keep them in line essentially

So I just read the grace year and watched the video (it was so fun to watch you make tiktoks :). It was the first dystopia I read and loved. I gave it 5 ⭐, I think the bullying part was too extreme and unrealistic but that didn’t change the experience of this reading, about the romance as a romance reader I liked it a lot, what a pity that you didn’t like it but I can understand why, the ending I found quite "realistic "but I don’t think there should be a sequel to this book Anyway, I loved this book and maybe it will be in my top 10 at the end of the year so thanks because I kind of read it because of this reading vlog with spoilers

I just finished reading The Grace Year so I wanted to go back and watch your spoiler vlog to see what you thought. I thought the book was just an OK read. I had expected to like it a lot more than I did with all the hype it was getting on BookTube. I only gave it 3 stars. I enjoyed parts of the book but most of the book was just a fair read for me.

This book does have a lot of similarities to "The Village" as you said, which makes me wonder if the author was inspired by the movie or the Amish coming of age Rumspringa? It's an interesting take that's for sure!

@@thecozycommune I don't think it's a movie? Not sure though, however it is an actual term & core "practice" of the Amish culture. It's referenced in a lot of TV Shows like Grey's Anatomy & Bones. It's all very fascinating!

I had difficulties understanding their "magic" at first too. But the further along I got I felt it wasn't real. It was just the power of girls becoming women. That's what I got from it.
