I wish I had one of these when I was in grade school. People automatically assume that hearing aids correct the problem but it doesn't. That's why it's called a hearing aid. It helps but our hearing is not fully restored.
I didn't know of FM systems until I was in graduate school. There are so many children with hearing loss who are at a disadvantage because people are not aware of these things. People assume we are not paying attention but we just don't hear everything that's going on and the classroom is the worst listening environment there is.

This video was so cool. I really enjoyed all the advice that the video offers and the examples it shows. It is incredible to see how hard it is for children with a hearing impairment work in the classroom. Great video!

Great video. Hearing the difference a FM system makes in the classroom was very effective. The pass mike technique is a great way to get the whole class involved and make sure the HI student is able to participate in the group discussion.

This video was great at explaining what a child hears when they have hearing loss. It is so important for the teacher and the student to communicate with each other when the technology devices are not working or working poorly. I also think that every classroom needs a mike to pass around the classroom so the child with the hearing loss can hear his classmates. That is so important for social interaction.

One thing I always tell educators or presenters.......... Everything you do to "help" the DHH child will greatly help all other students in the class room. It is a win win for all.

I am personally associated with SUNIYE since long.
It is very noble of you that u started a cause like this for special children through SUNIYE..may god bless u with courage, determination and will to lead this organization to sky highs and come out in flying colors. I visited the school last year and was astonished with the development they bring out in children. God bless u.

I thought that it really interesting to have learned about the FM technology. It amazes me that there is technology that can assist the hearing impaired in such a meaningful way. Learning about this technology also made me realize the importance of (in North Carolina, at least) the individual aids that go around to different classrooms with students with hearing impairments. Special attention needs to be paid to these students to make that their technology assistance is working properly.

This is a good video to remind educators to pay attention to student’s needs. It can be easy in your day to day to forget to do something as simple as using technology available to you. A good reminder that we as educators have a responsibility to service all students.

This video was very helpful with providing techniques and tools that can be utilized in the classroom for hearing impaired students. There was valid point in the video about things teachers should do in order to make these student very productive. The FM system seems to be a very successful tool as long as it is used correctly and effectively. Its also shown in the video how we teachers must be ALERT and AWARE of our students in the classroom as well.

I was born deaf in my left ear I had a FM system in kindergarten, 3rd , and 4th grade . But I didnt wear a cochlear implant or hearing aid. The FM system was a rectangular box speaker and a microphone which the teacher wears .

I enjoyed watching this video because it was nice to see how well the FM works when used properly. I could tell the teacher cared about making sure the hearing impaired student was learning and listening. The video was right; however, forgetting to put your microphone on or to repeat something another student asked can happen to anyone at anytime.

Please edit your settings to allow others to add captions to this video. I would be happy to volunteer my time to do so as this will help the deaf/hoh community so they can better advocate their needs. There are YT videos which show how this can be done on your end. Thanks!

I was intrigued to hear the two examples given in the video of students with hearing loss. The FM system is a great piece of technology to utilize for students with hearing impairment. The video was clear that it is important to read the clues the student gives to make sure the student's FM system is working correctly. It is pointless to have this technology if it is not used correctly. Like the video suggested, as teachers we can not rely on the student telling us if there is a problem.

This should be sent to every school where a student with a hearing impairment attends, education for a hearing impairment is not too hard to do, just be aware and follow these strategies.

There are many reasons students are powerless. Students are powerless when the adults ignore them or avoid doing anything that takes extra effort or training (such as putting on an FM system), when they are self-conscious when there is an incredible amount of information that has been said already, and it would seem impossible to get it back, and they would be disrupting the class, or interrupting the teacher and seem rude. What can a student do when they have asked the teacher many times, both in the classroom and outside, including notes, to use the technology and the teacher ignores them. The school keeps saying it is the student's responsibility to say when he/she has difficulty hearing and the teacher is not using the technology. The problem is the student was told to say "repeat that please" when he can't hear (aside from the technology being used) instead of the teachers using the technology and making sure the auditory quality in the classroom is good,. It is the whole time the teacher or other students are talking, The teacher hesitates with the interruption, may repeat one sentence, and then just keeps going. His SLP has tried to intervene on his behalf, but no change.

I got a comment from audiodoc1965: "There is a cc button in the right corner of the video, which is available for most videos. LOOK, LISTEN, LEARN."
Actually, captions are generated by machine and not good. It needs to be either created by scratch or fixed by a human to add punctuation, clear any typos, correctly divide lines, sync with speech, add speaker identificaitons and sound descriptions.
Please clean up the garbled captions! Thanks.

As a teacher, you would really have to be aware of having the device on and repeating things a lot to ensure that all of your students are aware of what is being said. I thought this was a really neat video because you got to actually experience how a classroom sounds to the hearing impaired. Thank goodness for modern technology.

I wish all schools had these. Hearing aids help, but are not cure alls. We as educators need to be aware of the symptoms of hearing problems. When a child is constantly looking around the room or not putting their books away until they notice everyone else has done so, that is a red flag. When you loose their attention as you move toward the sides and/or back of the room that is another red flag. If the child is constantly straining to understand speech unless it is very loud, that is a red flag. The way my parents found out I have a hearing problem was this: My 1st grade teacher was very observant and noticed that when they moved to either side and/or the back of the room, they lost my attention. If they stayed front and center, they always had it. They recommended that my hearing be tested. If it were not for this person, I would not be the successful person I am today. If you suspect your child is having a hearing problem, here's a simple test: Wait until your child is really interested in an activity they really enjoy then walk up and clap your hands close to them. If they are startled, that's good, if not, have their hearing checked by a certified audiologist.

I thought this was a very interesting video. I learned what FM system was and I think that a lot of teachers should view this video so that they would know how it looks to not pay attention to a student that is hearing impaired. I did not like the way the teacher forgot to turn on the FM system nor did like the way he did not repeat the other students questions so that the hearing impaired student could responded he did not even call on the student when he was raising his hand.

Lol you guys crying about hearing loss.
Why can’t you learn ASL since you have your hands & eyes.
Now you guys look like robots 🤖 because you guys can’t wear it if you swimming, sports and etc. Then how to communicate after that electronic out for the reason?
I own a nice 800 hp race truck, family with two deaf boys/fiancée and having normal life like hearing people. I don’t wear any hearing aids or cochlear implants.
