If Hawk failed the polygraph he'd lose his career, his military rank ,banned from government work, and outed publicly. Hawk was able to walk away from his inheritance because of his job. He would have to flee Washington D.C.
Hawk referred Mary to another position in case he loses his job.
He gifts his cufflinks to show that Hawk belongs to Skippy too as he's wearing the tie while taking the polygraph. He has to give Skippy that envelope because his reputation may be ruined in the next 24hrs.
Notice that Hawk doesn't tell Skippy about being summoned? He's not using Skippy. Hawk's taking the arrows to prolong Skippy's goodness and shield him from the reality of it. There's a morbid vibe to Hawk's tender kiss because there's a suicide rate associated with the poly.
In episode 3 Hawk tells Skippy that the lies get easier, but at what cost? For Hawk it's sobriety. That experience did a number on him. Hawk's not okay...

That Roy Cohn clip is real. He was dying of AIDS but claimed to be dying of liver cancer to the bitter end.

Like he actually thought it would not come out in a autopsy

The woman on the cover of the magazine that Hawk uses to prepare for the polygraph test is Mamie Eisenhower, First Lady of the United States (1953-1961) as wife of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

It’s one of my favorite shows so I’m glad more people know about it.
And yes you’re right, they both have power over each other. For me the most interesting thing in their relationship is how their dynamic constantly changes and how they flip that power between them. Tim is not that simple naive catholic boy when it comes to Hawk, and Hawkins indeed is under Tim’s “spell”, although it’s not obvious most of the time 😂 A good example of their dynamic is the scene from the first episode when Tim wanted to go to a party with Hawk.
Anyway be prepared for the rest of the show and thank you for your reaction videos, I really enjoy it!

I agree. I was never sold on the bad Hawk poor innocent sweet Tim dynamic that many people saw. It's build on Hawk not being the easiest character to like and Tim being essentially Bambi. What I find interesting is that Hawk pretty much boxed himself in with his marriage to Lucy while Tim continues to (out)grow. Hawk was telling Tim about his Italy dream in the early 50s and he finally gets the job in 1986. The 50s, 60s,70s and half of the 80s he's chasing his freedon dream from the 50s.

@@hannah-wj9otAgreed! The Hawk - Toxic, Tim - Angelic talk is an oversimplification and Matt Bomer & Johnathan Bailey are giving these phenomenal performances to not be reduced to that. Also Hawk didn't need to job opportunity to move to Italy at some point. They're rich, could have just done it. He's that boxed in..

@@hannah-wj9ot Very perceptive comments, thanks. Btw, the continued growth of Tim over the decades is a striking and welcome rethinking of his storyline in the Thomas Mallon novel. The whole Marcus/Frankie/Jerome storyline is also entirely new, and Lucy, who is a shadowy background figure in the book, becomes a far more interesting and nuanced character. Finally, the addition of Lucy and Hawk's son Jackson to the roster -- in the novel, I think they only have a daughter -- enriches the story tremendously. All gratitude to Ron Nyswaner for seeing how the novel could be expanded to such great effect.

The shifting and complex power dynamic is also brilliantly reflected in the explicitly sexual scenes, as cast and series creator Ron Nyswaner have pointed out in interviews.
