    Yam, when I first considered buying my first road bike, I was sure it would be the baby BMW G310R. I thought it looked great, but I was still on the fence. Today I went to a dealer w/ the R3 and the Ninja 400. Ninja? I love the analog tach.....and that's about it. I got on the R3 w/ sales guy stabilizing so I could get me feet on the pegs. I was hooked. I'm like this is it, it spoke to me. Not on the fence now. This will be mine. Ok I hate the stock turn signals too, so those will go And brake pads are an easy upgrade. (I upgraded pads and rotors in my DD VW, way better feel) All I want is to carve up twisty country back roads.This will be a great tool for that and I don't fear I will out grow, which is why you hear people say, oh get a 600 because you will be bored by this in 2 months. Well, maybe you superstar, but I hope to be barely competent to ride on the highway in 2 months. I will spend my first week riding around in a parking lot just getting the feel of things. (in full gear) Call me a wimp if you wish but I spent 7 years working in a Level 1 trauma center. I have seen some shit when it comes to bikes. I'm looking at the 2020. It looks totally badass in matte black. I like the super sport styling, but having upright seating, but I want the aero over a naked, not just for looks but protection from the wind.

    Wonderful bike? Are you kidding me!?
    Its spectacular! I have 5 bikes, rebel 250, bolt950, R6, tw200, & my R3 which ive owned for 3 years original owner & 14k miles & i tried letting it go once but it is sooo hard.
    I love all my bikes & each engine makes me happy but the r3 knocks it out the park in overall usage & versatility.
    I use it twice or 3 times a week for my 95mile commute in Southern CA where it gets quite crowded on the highways but it basically turns me into a fish swimming through the coral reefs when i lane split responsibly & carefully.
    Enough to keep me happy at 70mph & ok at 80mph & nimble at 30mph through traffic. Fast enough for the city & while not the most economical fuel wise i still get around 62mpg highway. Still leaves me half a tank when i get home from my 95mi commute.
    Ive ridden it to the track & raced allday, to the coast & through the mountains, firetrails & through the mud, & all around towns of LA & back to the high desert for full day trips. Hasnt skipped a beat, well it did overheat on me once when i came to a stop from racing through the canyons which turns out the fan didnt come on until i left the ignition on & hit the kill switch. Heard it was a thing with these bikes but that has been my only complaint & only happened to me on 2 occasions.
    I maintain it meticulously so it gives me efficient performance every time & hoping it gives 100k miles when she retires. Now i only use it for the freeway cause it has become my weapon in the war of traffic but this pegasus is indeed a noble steed & while the bigger bikes do excite me my 2016 rapid red R3 will always be home.

    Thirty years ago the options were a bit limited. I learnt to ride on a Honda 50cc two stroke. Trying to squeeze every inch of performance out of that little bike taught me a lot. My son learnt to ride recently on an old CBR125 and when he got his licence three months ago upgraded to a 2016 R3. It is a fun little bike to ride and quite forgiving.

    This latest generation of sport bikes in the 250 to 500cc range is awesome! They handle and look just like the bigger bikes, they are a blast to ride! Years ago the only options were the 250 and 500 Ninja, they weren't bad at the time but they did not compare to the 600's of the day.

    Just an FYI, my first bike was a GSXR 600. For me to be able to go through the MSF on base, they actually made me replace the LED turn signals for the ones that stick out because the "flush mounts" were not "visible enough". Not positive, but that might be a reasoning behind their still utilizing the ugly things.

    It'll be interesting to see how the new refreshed R3 with inverted forks and re-tuned rear shock fares against the 2020 KTM RC 390. Both bikes are in fierce competition of each other. In the past the R3 got knocked for its traditional forks and sag happy rear suspension, but with the 2019+ models getting some revisions it'll be closer then ever to the RC 390 on the track. Although still no slipper clutch or drive by wire (RC 390 comes with these from the factory). It'll be interesting to so how KTM responds with revisions of their own to the RC 390.

    You forgot to mention that, not only does the Ninja 400 have more power, it’s also lighter than the R3. That’s a miracle of engineering. And that digital dash on the R3, in my opinion, is not the way to go. I’ll take my analog tachometer any day.
    We get it, Yam. You love Yamaha. But the Ninja 400 objectively offers more for the same price. Not to mention that you’ve also admitted to never riding one. Disappointed.

    • @alanjones7975
      @alanjones7975 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Jose Ortega it offers all that but considering no one anything below 600cc is trying to have a dick measuring contest, the 400’s looks made it lose instantly when buying a new bike. The R3’s appearance sold me. Never looked at a 400 and thought “that looks nice”

    • @chrisbarbz9238
      @chrisbarbz9238 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@alanjones7975 Don't you think that going for a bike that offers less value simply because 'it looks better' is also about dick measuring contest? I know it's a different dimension as the displacement, but I think you get the point. And honestly, we all want a bike that looks cool. But that's just a by-product of the marketing and consumerism game. While I agree, that the R3 might appeal to more people because probably it suits more people's "ideals", that it certainly looks cool, you won't look at the ninja 400 and spill your guts on the floor. And to be honest, I was almost sold on the R3 for the beginner bike's division, but when I learned that there is a better bike out there that offers more, I went for the ninja 400. Obviously it is the better choice pound for pound and we all know that the R3's only win is in the looks department (not for me though). This channel's opinion about the Ninja 400 is probably true about it being a 'compromise' if it's the bike you choose, that would only be true if you're going to switch for a bigger bike in the future. Otherwise, it's the sensible choice for a small cc bike.

    • @JohnSmith-yy2uj
      @JohnSmith-yy2uj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the ninja is lighter, but those who have crashed it say that they basically fall apart because of the weaker chassis. I prefer the nicer looking, stronger r3

      If (if) the designers at Kawasaki would simply change the windscreen with a fully framed fairing (like the R3) and change to inverted forks, they would be able to compete with the R3's aesthetics. I see Yamaha, increasing their displacement closer to 400cc, in the future.

    The ninja 400 outperforms r3 in so many fields ,you probably did not ride it but the standard fork of ninja is as better as the usd of r3 . N400 brakes are better, power delivery and handling is as good as r3. Test drive both of these bikes and n400 is way better in so many aspect. Especially in the brakes.

      I really don't understand this whole problem he seems to have with the Ninja 400. Is it an elitism thing, or something? I don't get it.
      I've put 1700 miles on my Ninja 400 in the six weeks I've owned it, and my goodness is that thing a blast. I paid the same amount of coin I would've had I bought a new Ninja 300 or R3, and I'm (on paper, anyway) getting more performance. He's purporting it to be some sort of rip-off, and it doesn't make sense. Does he just really have that much of a Yamaha bias?

    Certainly looks the stuff, and no doubt is pushing up the front relative to its competition. I don't know about having a brand new R3 as a beginner bike though (unless you can win one). Go for something older, if you drop it or make a mistake (which is normal while learning), it doesn't hurt the bank as much. Your ego will still receive the same pounding though...

    I'm torn here. My older brother is a seasoned moto vet and he rides a gsx1000. I have only moderate experience on a dirtbike but I'm going into the sport moto world and r3 just seems perfect for me, but he's pressuring me to do the r6. The r6 just seems like something I need to graduate into so I don't get myself hurt but historically I learn things fast, so if I do get an r3 and outgrow it in a matter of months, I'd be in a jam. Can't believe how hard it is deciding which motorcycle to get to start on... I have little to no desire to race anyone or any car, but I'd def like to have the power to rip down a straight if I felt like I was capable. What to do... ugh

    I wouldn’t even consider the rc390 a beginner bike. It’s really uncomfortable and the one that I had gave me problems before it was even due for the first service. It’s hella fun on the track, but not a very forgiving or welcoming bike for new riders. The r3 is where it’s at.
