    Great inspirational video showing how innovative a Pond keeper can be to improve his filtration system. Particularly impressed with the air pump injection which certainly gives the media a thorough “boil” wash rather than a passive air drawn flush on the Tempest say,! I’ve had my Tempest installed two weeks ago and flush it daily as part of my routine. Again a great video to inspire the DIY Pond keeper,

      @@DerbyKoi
      Hi
      I’ve only recently fitted my Tempest as a pre-filter to a bank of Oase UVCs that is then fed into an Oase 36000 Bio-system. The Tempest had a leaking ball discharge valve and that was replaced by EA when it was brought to their attention. The Tempest is a nice but simple bit of kit. It does pull out debris, which I flush daily. Sometimes a singular flush or twice in succession depending upon how much debris is seen amongst the media. The water and whatever is held by the K+ media isn’t really dirty and the K+ is only now starting to change to that pale caramel brown colour to suggest that a bio film is taking hold.
      The way you approached the “boil” wash via air-pump agitation on your DIY upflow filter is superior to that of the EA Tempest, which as we know, relies on air being inhaled into the the Tempest as its waste water is being vented.
      The way I have configured my filtration set up was to make the filters and pipe-work look like some Engine from out of a Supercar. It’s not contained within a Shed or anything like that. But upon a raised deck. I’m hoping to finish off the pipe work bracket supports later this week. And this will be the third re-iteration of a filter system on my Pond which was dug-out 20 odd years ago. Home made filters until the Easy pod came to market, then (and now) twin Oase Bio Smart 36000 filtration systems. The fact of just switching off the main gravity fed pump and lifting just two slide lever valves to flush waste water is just great - as is the simple operation of the Ball valve on the EA Tempest. I will see if I can upload a picture on here at one point!
      I feed my fish, currently just 7 at present lightly but every two hours. The weight of each feed is just 2grams of high protein pelleted food from Hikari and EA. My pond is only 1320 gallons and admittedly the Koi are small , around 4 inches but one is nearing 10”. I’m expecting to add a few more small koi later this week bringing the fish count up to 12 and that’ll be it.
      Keep up with the innovations. It’s great to see other Pond keepers approach to a somewhat fascinating hobby in terms of water quality (chemistry), the fish themselves and the ingenuity of DIY skills using readily available components.
      Cheers
      Nicholas

      Cheers for that mate, sounds like you have your filtration sorted, and the pipework sounds interesting. You cant add pics to TH-cam but you can send them via my Facebook page or email to derbykoiuk@gmail.com, I did a bit of research Regards the tempest and all seemed positive unless adding a clay or powered based treatment to the pond and then problems occurred during the clean. I think one of the reasons I decided to build the upflow was I can adjust and maybe improve as necessary as the pond demands, plus I enjoy the challenge of designing and making things, most of which either don't work or need adjusting which is all part of the fun for me, I'm a big fan of automated filtration and love how the drum works, but I also enjoy the manual cleaning I think it keeps me better informed on how the pond water is. Your welcome to send me pics or video of your pond, fish filtration etc, I do show videos on the channel, seeing how others keep there ponds is a great ways to share ideas but I never show anything without permission. Thanks for supporting the channel, much appreciated 👍

    @ItsWhatIDo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well done Andy. Nice build.
    I don't think you will need any more media in there. The problem I found with more media is that it drops below the air feed and then pushes the dirt back up into the media. The other thing is the second air pipe at the top. I don't think you need to do that. The only reason I did it is because mine feeds the ASHP and if I pump too much air into it I get air locks. So I fitted the second air line so I can shut the top valve and still allow the air to pump in without pressurising the filter. I wont be fitting one to the second filter. It does no harm allowing the air to come in through the waste pipe when you drop the water level. In fact it gives you a head start on the boil. I've noticed I'm getting a lot of floating algae clumps in my filter. It might be where I used to have my pumps raised off the floor of the pond and now, after fitting a float switch (which you inspired me to do), I have the pump on the floor of the pond. I'm hoping that will slow down once the floor is cleaned up a bit. I vacuumed it today and there was nowhere near the normal amount of rubbish to clear out. I think a two day cleaning cycle is going to work best for me. I tried 4 days and it took 3 or 4 boils to get the media clean. So 2 days and 2 boils does the trick for me. It will be interesting to see what you find is best for your set up. Oh and thanks for the mention 😀

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just looked back and realized my reply wasn't posted 🤨
      So I'll try again...
      I agree I don't think I need a air release valve, I'm still going to try more media and alter flow rates, i can always change back, i think each filter needs modifying to suit different ponds and applications, I'm shocked at what it can do already (yes I know you told me) 😁

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers mate, re the air inlet, the reason its upright and placed a few inches higher than the plate is, when its boiling the the debris is forced down and stays at the bottom and not forced back up into the media, if you watch the video you will see the bottom water column is filthy but the higher layers are cleaner, so when I open the drain the debris flushes first, well that's my theory when building it, and it seems to work 😬

    Hi Andy, Its me again. (Jon Moore from Cornwall.) Still trying to get the filter room working on my pond arrangement, but seem to have come across a couple of more questions I'm hoping you can answer for me. I'm rethinking the 3 barrel system down to a 2 with an Upflow filter as well. I think if I pump the water up and drop it through various foams and layers this would be better than trying to filter it by going upwards Gravity, not resistance, and then through a moving bed. Do you agree?
    The second question is, I have watched both your Upflow filter videos and I cannot see why you have a third slide valve sited on the bottom of the acrylic tube? surely you can either inlet through or go to waste using the other two. I would like to know your reasoning please as they are not cheap are they? . Thanks again mate regards, Jon.

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Its difficult to fully understand without seeing a diagram but it's always better to gravity to filtration, and pump return otherwise the pump will chew up the waste into much finer particles as it does with mine, plus you can purge the system better. So in my opinion it would be better to gravity feed the barrel if possible and pump return to the uplow and back to pond.
      The extra slide valve was a school boy error on my part, rushing to finish I fitted it to the wrong side and couldn't change it as it was welded, now it's just left open. I mentioned it in a later video.
      Hope that help mate

      Hi mate, I've not researched inline heaters, my thoughts are it should be on the return after filtration and uv, I think I remember queni koi writting about it. 👍

    Hi Andy, Having watched quite a few you tube videos regarding ponds I feel you may be the person to help me. I am just building a 11 sq metre pond half 600mm below ground and half 600mm above ground. I have built a shed to house the new "pumping station" and associated bits required. I have three blue plastic 220 l barrels and intend to create a filter array with them , the burning question is where in the system do I site my uv filter, some say before the bio filter and some say after. I may copy you and build an upflow filter to site instead of the third barrel. I am thinking of brushes and foams in the first which I will clean out regularly, and then the second will become the hallowed Bio filter using a mixture of pumice and a bag of K1 mini and probably other stuff, not cleaned as much, then the upflow filter and out to a waterfall. I would appreciate your opinion on this and thanks for the videos, keep em coming! Jon

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding the uv from what I've researched, if pump fed the uv is first. If gravity the uv is after filters. If it was me and you have the space I would keep the 3 barrels.... 1st brushes, foam etc 2nd pumice, alfa grog etc in bags for easy cleaning and 3rd as a moving bed for bio using plastic media like k1 and then the upflow for fines removal. Just my opinion but hope that helps. Thanks for your support mate
      Andy

    awesome job buddy can i ask are you pump or gravity fed in to the easy pod? if your pump how have ypu hidden the pipes etc from the pump

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Aaron, I'm pump fed, i have a bottom drain, the drain runs to the filterhouse, my pump (dry) is inside the filterhouse connected to the drain pipe and I use flexi hose from the pump to the pod, its it bit difficult trying to explain in words, I have videos if you look back which hopefully will explain it better

      @@DerbyKoi ah i think i get what your saying you have a drain in the pond then pipe from that under ground to the filter house a pump from that pipe that pumps into the easy pod and the from the pod back to the pond?

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aaroncooper516 yes mate, the pod is pump fed and gravity return, also I forgot... when the underground pipe gets to the filterhouse theres a T joint, 1 pipe goes to the pump the other is a vertical pipe (above pond level and capped) this is used to power wash the underground pipework to the drain 👍

      Cheers mate, I'm really pleased with the performance and building it was a lot of fun, wrighty is on hand for advice but I've not looked into a drum build but I'm sure it's a lot harder than the filters I've built so far 😁

      I did the same on his first drum build. I even bought all the parts but I couldn't figure out how to incorporate it into my system which is pressurised slightly. I still have the parts so if I change my filters at some point I may yet still build it.

    • @DerbyKoi
      @DerbyKoi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a bit confused on this comment, if you mean use tape to prevent the tube cracking, then tape is used to stop the drill slipping only and does not stop tiles or in this case the acrylic from cracking, although I did not crack the tube, so not sure why the comment 🤔
