I agree. In this movie, we don't have the cliche of the narrow-minded and rude cop of too many movies. Here, we would have expected the educated upper-class physician to be the good tolerant father, and it's just the opposite. The police chief is the loving and compassionate father who, after at first being put out by his discovery of his son's homosexuality then supports him fully. Another great figure is the maths teacher, who in support of her gay student publicly assumes her own homosexuality, not an obvious thing to do for a teacher who may then probably have to face criticism from various sides and maybe even put her position in jeopardy.
Diana Archer I’m a student at a French school and honestly the homophobia is unreal, I myself am scared to come out. The teachers are very supportive but the students not so much. I think they are mostly ignorant but eh whatever
Its really weird. In America, a guy in my class came out. No one really seemed to care that he liked dudes and life went back to normal. That was in a small city, that’s still kind of conservative. But in France, a place you’d expect to be far more liberal, they’re mercilessly making fun off and beating two boys for being gay.
@Sam In Canada there was never homophobia in schools I went to. We'd hide it a bit but there wasn't any shaming or violence. Maybe I'm just lucky. No problems in the workplace. (work on the railway out west was a bit iffy though. It was a workgang of ~75 guys. I kept quiet, I must admit).
@Sam If I ever travel in FRANCE, id have to shut up more often, I woudnt want to ruin the ambiance with my accent or I should at least try to speak English with a French accent.
I'm literally in shock. Wtf is wrong with these kids. I'm a proud Canadian and part of the LGBTQ+ community and have had the privilege of not being discriminated in school as well as every day life. This kind of behaviour towards another human being is just not acceptable
I completely agree, the way they treated him was unacceptable and disgusting, I don’t care if someone doesn’t agree with being gay or not but that doesn’t give anyone the right to treat someone that way
Unfortunately, this is not exaggerated a bit here. Watching this really threw me back to my days in school in Germany. It was exactly like this. The accusatory language, the using gay/queer as insults, the fighting over "not being gay", the laughter, the stares, the accusations of the rare allies standing up against this bs to be queer themselves. All of it.
@@Dosenwerfer that’s awful, I don’t understand why kids care, like mind your own business, like if someone were to ask questions like that when I was in school I’d be like” what’s it to you, mind your own business.”
It makes me sick that some POCs (people who were once treated horribly because of their skin color/race) treat gay people horribly, some even go to the extent of hurting them physically. At least have some compassion as you were once in their position.
Without a doubt this is one of the most poignant well done films ever produced on the subject covering so many subtle aspects of the subject. The hero of the film is the police chief father who I believe is Algerian. The subtitles are difficult to read and poorly translated so it helps to know some french and social trends in France.

So, I read some comments about the fact that homophobia in France was only caused by people with a Muslim background. I don't want to minimise the fact that some Moslims are indeed very homophobic, but since such a thing is forgetting that the mouvement against gay marriage "Manif pour tous" was mostly led by Catholics. Don't get me wrong, I do not mean that Catholics are homophobic, but making only one community responsible for a social problem is underestimating the aforementioned problem. Having a retrograde and hateful way of thinking is unfortunately not restricted to one culture, religion or ethnicity.
Blacks were also blamed I find it funny how only blacks and Muslims were blamed for homophobia when European CULTURES started homophobia and racism. It’s a known fact that no one wants to talk about but want to blame minorities that have no influence over an entire diaspora... Tell me where Christianity started? Tell me where most religions started? Europe... Africans (black Americans too.) was converted to Muslim and Christianity either through slavery, or through invading of Africa. Spreading toxic ideas. If all of that didn’t happen Im quite sure blacks wouldn’t be this religious, and homophobic as the Bible says so. But hey can’t change the past but what I can do is try it to be like some..
Also I agree that Muslim religion is toxic just like all the others. I dislike them all. Hatred just full of hatred. Did you know Muslims also inslaved Africans too and did horrific things? C R Hmm nice way to throw racism into a homophobic situation. It’s one thing to say a person is homophobic but to claim that everyone of a race is, and is the only one spreading that is just plain dumb. I can agree that black folk can be quite homophobic as I am a black person but white ppl aren’t far from the same way there are white homophobes little do you know 🙄. Also you know white folks taught blacks that homophobic behavior so blame your own culture.
C R Again if that first comment was true. Then just because a gay person was governor now means homophobia doesn’t exist. Just because a person of color gets a place at office doesn’t mean a damn thing if civilians don’t reflect warm feeling towards other ppl of color. It’s a cop out statement and means you do not care to understand the issue it’s just what you say and that’s it. Also just because your boyfriend is mixed doesn’t mean you don’t carry racial biases. Like I said in the other comment section just because you have a *insert minority* friend doesn’t mean you like that minority or the others... It’s yet another cop out to refuse to hear slightly different views. Either way I know many ppl who aren’t racially biased, who actually care about understanding issues so it isn’t like it’s impossible. I couldn’t give a shit about skin tone, race, sexuality, and nationality. But it’s sad how the world is huh?
