Equating a sinking ship to a doomed relationship and its impending demise. This song has always been one of my favorites by BN. It unfortunately became all to real in regard to my personal life. I will forever be thankful for it though.
You ain’t the only one amigo. And it sounds so stupid and I hated when people would say it to me, but even if that hole will never close, it does get smaller after a while. And then you find someone else and you think less of that person you sunk with.
I feel you brother, this song feels all to real to me as well. But listening to it brings me a sense of relief, almost like my feelings are being channeled through it. Brand New has always been one of my favs.
This is the best song ever! I listened to while in high school.... played it all the time while I was deployed overseas.....and I still listen to it... keeps me calm
I believe it man. This has been one of my all-time favourite songs since I was a teenager. I saw them here in London (Canada) and it was just like.....magical, you could say. The entire crowd was completely silent at some points, likely trying not to cry haha
Brand New is the only band I've been called a poser for because I remember them in 03 and loved the music. Usually it's the later fans that take heat, not the originals. I don't care what some kid thinks, I love this song and many others. It got me through some very tough times.
(Posting this so I can read along while listening) lol We sent out the SOS call. It was a quarter past four in the morning when the storm broke our second anchor line. Four months at sea, four months of calm seas to be pounded in the shallows off the tip of Montauk Point. They call them rogues, they travel fast and alone. One-hundred-foot faces of God's good ocean gone wrong. What they call love is a risk, cause you will always get hit out of nowhere by some wave and end up on your own. The hole in the hull defied the crews attempts to bail us out. And flooded the engines and radio and half buried bow. Your tongue is a rudder. It steers the whole ship. Sends your words past your lips or keeps them safe behind your teeth. But the wrong words will strand you. Come off course while you sleep. Sweep your boat out to sea or dashed to bits on the reef. The vessel groans the ocean pressures its frame. To the port I see the lighthouse through the sleet and rain. And I wish for one more day to give my love and repay debts. But the morning finds our bodies washed up thirty miles west. They say that the captain stays fast with the ship through still and storm. But this ain't the Dakota, and the water is cold. We won't have to fight for long. This is the end. This story's old but it goes on and on until we disappear. Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while you were underneath. I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains sunk below the sea. I spoke the words but never gave a thought to what they all could mean. I know that this is what you want. A funeral keeps both of us apart. You know that you are not alone. Need you like water in my lungs. This is the end.
The last part of this song has at least 2 different vocal parts. I've never understood why when they play it live, no matter how many people they bring on stage to help sing, everyone just sings the same part.
I’ve heard this live, it seems to be a little different every time. This version sounds like what this song would have sounded like if it had come out in the early 90’s.
Jesse is a great singer who can do a lot with his voice (emotional, loud, powerful etc). He’s pretty playful live and it doesn’t always sounds perfect. But for me, it’s real and I love him for that. And I think he counts emotion more than perfect notes.
I know it’s not just me cuz I’ve seen other ppl comment this too but the backup singer (Vinny) kinda ruins their live performances. His voice just doesn’t mesh well. Jesse is amazing as always though ❤️
What I would give to sing this live one more time.
This might be the most well written song I've ever heard
i miss them so much

TJ Scuroko Dude same, I think they’re first two albums have a lot of raw emotion and youthfulness that’s really unmatched
Best song, best version of this song.

you say mother nature has no chill.., she can make her own. oh, don't you worry
lets play crack the sky with a PS4 remote and 5 billionaires.
As much as I really love him, Jesse sounds like he can't hear himself? Vin is an amazing singer.
Vin is the absolute shit, but Jesse is legend miss
+PinStripes41 Agree, best musician since fucking Beethoven or so

I politely disagree. Vin is not an amazing singer.
Respect the art not the artist, wish he do those things

I wish he didn’t do what he did
