  • Get the recipe at my blog annievang.com/sweet-pork-eggs This is an easy recipe how to make sweet pork also known as 'nqaj qaab zib' or 'nqaij qab zib'. Sweet pork is a popular dish in Asia and there are many variations of it. I hope you enjoy this recipe and leave me a comment if you try it. If you like your pork more tender, cook it longer than shown here in the video. Remember, you can always adjust the taste by adding more water and adjusting the sugar and soy sauce.

This and Adobo are completely different. Obviously it's cooked similar & looks similar, but if you've ever eaten both, they do not taste the same. People & their unnecessary comments. On a positive note, good job on your version of this dish. Can't wait to try it out. Only remembered my mom cooking it when I was young.

why do people keep commenting that she is cooking it wrong or calling it wrong? every ethnicity cooks it differently and this dish is popular in alot of ethnicities. but the hmong race calls it sweet pork.

I come back every now and then to refresh the recipe. I recently attended a wedding and some folks tasted the sweet pork there and looked at me saying "they missed mine, I should have made it." I didn't know how to take that, but the credit actually goes to you Miss Hmong Food.

    Hi Annie,
Nice video! I'm Cambodian and we make this, too. It's called "caw sach jrouk" in Khmer. This type of soup is called "caw" and pork is "sach jrouk". My family uses ABC sweet soy sauce to make this instead of adding sugar. We also use a little more ginger and cut the ginger in to julienne slices instead of just slicing it. Thanks for sharing with us your recipe. It's good stuff.

Glad to find videos cooking Lao food. Husband is Laotian. I'm Hispanic. Married 20 yrs. This is one of my favorite Laos/Hmong (not sure where dish originated) foods. Also one of the few Laos dishes our USA born kids actually enjoy. Only thing I do different from your video is a shortcut. I place the eggs with the soup around 20 minutes before the soup is done. This recipe was taught to me by my one and only Laos friend ever. She passed away some 15 years ago. I never had a Laotian friend again.

tried your sweet pork dish!! It's perfect and very simple to follow. I have tried it with white sugar and cane sugar, I like the flavor and consistency of brown sugar best.
I use sweet soy sauce and dark soy sauce in mine as well as 5 spice powder in place of the star anise (just a little goes a long way) and I add lemon grass, lime leaves, and galanga.

Lol. This been the original recipes for decades. I dont know y she left out some of the ingredients like galanga, bay leaf n lemon grass. Garlic is what killed the dish that's just my opinion. I'ma chef myself, reinventing n reinnovating some old recipes to look more exciting and delicious. She could've just wait til the end then drop the boiled egg in there to glaze with the carmelize sauce. Different method of cooking.

I was taught to use Sweet Soy Sauce with the brown sugar. That allows you to put the eggs in with the pork without them putting in the boiling soy sauce. In about 5-10 minutes, the eggs are nicely browned. Having had both kinds, with & without the sweet soy, I find that the sweet soy it gives it a richer flavor. But, that's just my opinion. I prefer the deeper, richer, thicker sauce. It's one of my husband's favorite dishes.
I was also taught that any meat works. But, for company - always use the pork. Guests deserve our best, not our cheapest.
For a lower calorie dish, try chicken thighs.(On the bone, because the bone adds flavor.) Delicious!
FYI; if you turn down the heat on your boiling soy sauce to a simmer you will get the same results, without your eggs cracking & spoiling the presentation. We first eat with our eyes.

Please see the excellent documentary, "The Superior Human?".

      @daraxiong19 4 ปีที่แล้ว

No. Because you want the flavor to penetrate the egg. Have you ever had or made tea eggs? Same concept you want to infuse it with as much flavor before combining it with the pork. If you've ever had the dish you would know that the egg and pork stand apart from each other in taste.

Man I sick of people claiming it's a certain country's dish , and it's not ADOBO !! My mrs is from Philippines, and the way she cooks it is way different. I'm Cambodian and we use all types of variations, from fish , to chicken, and pig feet and pig ear, but we add pepper corns in ours and sometimes bamboo shoots. To sum it up, this is a classic South Eastern Asian Soy dish, in Cambodia we call "Koh" and I think Viets call it the same.

Great recipe instructions. This was my childhood dish my Mom made me. She called it "Brown Eggs" but later found out it was called Palo OR Moo Palo in Thailand. She cooked it for hours and doing it for long period of time just add the Hard Boiled eggs in the same pot. The eggs will absorb the juices and turn the eggs brown. Longer you cook the better it taste OR next day is even better. Serve over white rice

+Sisomphone 1977 They are confusing people by saying they are not Laotian.. cuz Laotian is coin term for people that are from the country of Laos no matter what ethnic group (Khmu,Lahu,Tai Dam, E-thin, Lu, Mien, Hmong etc... Laotian doesn't mean your ethnic Lao but a nationality of person from Laos.. they keep saying they don't have a country but sorry to break it to them but there will never be a country where only Hmong people will only live and their the only ethnic group .. even tho Laos is majority Lao! we have no problem saying that's their country too since they and there parents, grand parents and great great great grand parents were born in Laos.. But they always try to seem take certain Lao national stuff and say it's Hmong culture.. They have heavily push and represent Hmong culture so much that when a American ask a Lao person, Your from Laos but your not Hmong?

So is it a thai dish or a lao dish? Come on Man, yall ain t the same race or you trying to say the thai and lao is the same? You do know that the only reason why you would call it yours is the addition of the egg. China stole it too. and literally every other southeast asian and asia stole this dish from you guys. Not just hmong. or maybe yall stole it from them? Who knows.

OMG!!! This is so good, I miss living with my mom because she always made this for me. Now after watching this I will try to make it myself. I'm laos by the way, but I agree with what you all are saying about thai vs lao etc. We should be behind all that silliness and just enjoy some good food.
