When the U.S. STARTED THIS program, numerous inmates commented that these dogs were the first things that ever loved them and made them feel worthwhile. It was also the first time inmates could trust a living thing enough to love them back. Says a lot.
Sometimes receiving the unconditional love that animals provide is what is lacking. To see how the trainers look at these dogs and put them above themselves speaks volumes. Prayers to the inmates and dogs on their 'habilitation'
A long time ago, my daughter and I volunteered with a similar program in the United States called Puppies Behind Bars, although this was with female prisoners. We would go to the prison once a week and pick up a pup and take them out to the community so the puppies could learn to socialize out in the public. It was a great experience for everyone involved.
These programs not only help inmates, but also help people who end up with these dogs. I wish the US would create more of these types of programs. Of course, certain criminals shouldn't be allowed around the dogs, but a lot of our prison system is filled with non-violent offenders like drug addicts. Giving them training, a purpose, the knowledge that they've helped someone by training the dogs, and a dog that loves them unconditionally is good for the psyche. We have some facilities that even train inmates how to groom dogs, which also gives them a skill to take into the real world once released.
Be careful about defining a drug addict as nonviolent. Some are some are very violent. And some remain on drugs while in prison. It is lucrative business in many prisons.
@@suzannehartmann946 obviously it's a case by case basis. But there are probably way more people that this kind of program could benefit than people who would take advantage and hurt the animals.
There are several programs like this in the United States, and I honestly believe this type of program should be implemented in every prison system. It would not only allow more service dogs to become available to disabled people, but also help rehabilitate inmates as well.
At my feet is Indy, a terrier mix, who started her training in prison in Florida. She’s such a loving cheerleader at age 13 that she had VERY good prisoner trainer who hopefully also benefited too! We’re dog sitting her for 3 weeks in Ontario - and she’s always welcome!
Seeing outside and the changes in 20 years is tear jerking. I hope the inmates can keep their dogs, they will comfort each other. This is better than any Disney movies
I’ve trained my own assistance dog (in the uk they can be owner trained) and just a few weeks ago she qualified to be a fully trained but having her has helped me mentally and physically I now want to get into dog training
This really touched my heart. To see how excited they were to do things we take for granted, like riding in a car, seeing the forest, visiting with children. And it is a dog that offers them that thing in their heart they have been missing.
Great program! I love that the inmates have a special domicile and clothing to identify them! I wouldn't mind seeing a documentary on the gentlemen that went through the program. The puppies who graduated and became service dogs!
I went to check out a dog for adoption at a prison in a neighboring county. The dog was extremely sweet but incredibly shy. She wouldn't leave her handler's side to come and greet me. I think these prisoners training assistance programs, as well as the ones where they just teach the dogs to get used to being around people, are a good thing.
We had this program at a prison in my city but they dont have it anymore because they changed to a maximum security prison. Sucks because the men that were in the program were able to get jobs working with dogs.
This guy Mark lookes like he he his is in his mojo…….hope he will get a second chance in live…..I think it’s good for inmates to train a dog!! I love this video🥰😁
This is the best program for most inmates. I have heard over and over how it softens these men’s hearts and changes the way they deal with other people. The wardens state the recidivism rate drops a lot due to these programs. We have no idea what these men have gone through growing up and this gives them a chance at a life and hope.
This really put a smile on my face and no they weren't going anywhere. They weren't gonna ruin their chances with the puppy's. Those men may have done something bad but they're being rehabilitated and it beautiful.
Well done to the jail for giving this wonderful programme a go. I am sure there are many prisoners all over the world who will benefit from taking part in a programme like this as well as the puppies and their future owners of course. ❤
These kinds of programs should be more present! Even if someone isn’t going to be in society again or for a long time, having dogs or other programs that can help them makes me smile. Sometimes people step on the wrong path and are in need of guidance.
I wonder what the percentage of inmates to go through this program are able to get jobs in the animal care industry once released. It seems like everybody likes programs like this but you never hear about companies like Petco or Petsmart or veterinarians hiring these people to be on their staff
I think ever if it does not end up getting them a job it can show them unconditional love and training guide dogs sounds like a great character point on a cv even in non pet related fields
This warmed my heart just as much as it did when I saw the full episode. It goes to show the unconditional love that the four-legged babies give. Everyone has the right to that type of love. It is given from and by God; and I believe firmly that that's why He gave us pets. They're an extension of it. God bless those wonderful men for their awesome work 😇🙏👌🌺💖.
God bless them all, I know that these inmates love these dogs very much they have come such a long way with these dogs Well done Guys take care hopefully not too much longer before yous can be released 💕💞💞💞💕💕💕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕
I love this. I've owner trained my own assistance dog (my second dog has started her training to be an assistance dog too) it's incredibly hard but it gives you something to do and look forward to. It's a project that is so rewarding once the dogs are showing results. These men obviously adore these dogs. I hope all these pups make it to become assistance dogs❤ brilliant work and as a disabled person with an assistance dog, I know just how much of a difference these dogs will make in someone's life. I got my independence back and am able to do things I couldn't do before 🥰❤
I love this program and it truly touched me. My best to these two guys who seem to have warm hearts despite past transgression and to these beauitiful pups with hearts of angels.
I am in a wheelchair and the wait for a dog can be years long. With people abandoning their "COVID dogs", shelters are full and dogs are being euthanized at terrifying rates. Why isn't this program in every prison? It's a win for everyone. Even if it's not for a disabled person, lots of dogs need training for reactivity, separation anxiety and many other issues before they can find their forever homes!
I’m glad they do this because it’s really important for inmates to be treated as human beings. I know that if I was in prison for something, I’d feel like I could change if I was given the trust to do something like this ❤️🐶
Or even just normal training for rescue dogs who have trouble finding homes bc they're a bit too rowdy and can't control themselves. More programs like this would be so beneficial to so many people.
We have a similar program in Washington state in the United States. They train the pups for adoption and teach inmates skills like dog grooming that they can use for a job when they leave. I agree they are great programs.
Brilliant relationship they have with the dogs ...they will be very sad wen the programme is over.. 21 yrs in prison...he was amazed at the car...how much lkngerxwilm he be incarcerated...
This is such a great program. In the US we had a few but as prisons were taken over by for profit businesses they closed a bunch. Hopefully with less private prisons we can get more of these programs going around the country.
This is so sweet, animal’s really do bring out the best in people I wish they’d do this in more prisons and jails I feel like it would be a really good thing. Is this full episode coming out anytime soon? I’ve watched just about every one on here I’m obsessed! All the love from america! ❤️🤍💙
This program teaches a skill that is needed and one that the inmate could market once he has finished his sentence. Further, this may prevent the inmate from doing anything illegal which could cause him to be re-incarcerated. Better than social therapy - time will tell.
As Dr. Brown said, Dogs don't judge. But it is also like that with the kids. Kids eather like you, no matter what or who you are. Or they don't like you. They are also honest, and that is what I like about them.

well yeah. the companionship and the experience in dog training will help rehabilitate them. :)

The US has hundreds of these programs all across the US, the first on started in the 80s.
i can't imagine how much comfort these dogs bring to the inmates working with them.
Those dogs are everything to them.

It's amazing how an animal can change a person's attitude and look on life
Animal do know the energy of what's inside persons feelings or emotions, then animals give comfort, love and calm to each person.
@@marieastwood5016 well said true
As someone with an assistance dog training assistance dogs isn’t easy it’s amazing how far they’ve come with these dogs
Omg I bawled my eyes out throughout the whole video, it was so moving, every minute of it. I wish them all so well.
Ugh. I LOVE this. Programs that help inmates and community members are so creative and rewarding♥️

They have these programs in the states too but it’s heart warming to see the joy it brings to these gentlemen and their training of the pups.
