Well, I heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? Well it goes like this: The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah... Well your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya She tied you to her kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah... Baby, I've been here before I've seen this room and I've walked this floor (you know) I used to live alone before I knew ya And I've seen your flag on the marble arch And love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah... There was a time when you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show that to me, do ya? But remember when I moved in you And the holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah... Maybe there's a God above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah... Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah... Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah
what i love about this version is that she didn't just sing it .. she was so passionate she lived every word and every melody and it felt like it came from the heart ..Bravo 😊
I watched many many versions of Leonard Cohans masterpiece but this one is the best I've ever listened. Her clean voice and her feeling is so true and seems to come from far inside
I'm starting to not remember what its like to not cry myself to sleep everynight but listening to this as I lay here crying tonight makes it not hurt so bad.... thank you
Bonjour ca fait plaisir, ces pour ma fille, qui aime cette chanson, qui ma quitter en 2005, après une longue maladie. Ce soir, je l écoutez + de 40 fois. 😍
I can't tell you how much this moves me. Not the song, just your voice. That's the kind of thing that makes people feel love long after you stop singing. Very well done, never stop.
Excellent voice, control, passion, commitment, emotion, ... And so well balanced with the guitarist's splendid performance. Can't stop listening to it. Singers and guitarists, learn from her and from him ... do it!
I`m always in awe when Hannah sings this song .. This is the best rendition by far out of all the performances I`ve ever seen .... BRAVO Hannah ...JUST JOHN
This video and song reminds me to stay strong in faith. You are a true woman and it shows every time you speak. God Bless Hannah, you are an inspiration.
I was doing something else and came upon this music video and then I couldn't take my ears away from it...I was memorized by the vocals. Thank you soo much for sharing. Hallelujah is one of my fav songs and I just added this cover and one of my favs as well. thx
Omg just when you think that there will never be a better version of this song something like this happens. The innocence you bring to this song is almost childlike. Bravo.
honestly... music is more than perfection singing or playing. dang if you transmit me the way you feel at that moment. you will get that perfection before my eyes
The guitar's rhythm and quiet volume blends gracefully with Hannah's patient pace. And then there's the soul in that voice. Gives me a mysterious sense of healing. Right now the country is having existential angst over mass murder shootings. Troubling times, making a sort of psychic smoke in the air. Thank you for this breath of fresh air.
Thank you for singing this in the sad and somber mood that the song represents. Attraction, domestication, the breakdown, and the hurt of relationships.
Lol I don't understand why people think there is a BIG difference between Leonard Cohen's version and Jeff Buckley's Cover of this song... the only difference is Speed... nothing else Jeff Buckleys is Slower... but I do love the Slower one it fits way more... I don't like when people speed through singing songs as beautiful as this
first of all Cohen is monotone. Secondly buckleys version is just him and his electric guitar. After he died it was like a living epitaph of himself. He was a very talented man who died too young and unexpectedly.
The biggest difference is that Cohen, who originally wrote the song, wrote almost 80 verses for it. When he performed it, he could do different verses of it. If you look at others performances of it, some performers will perform certain verses, and others choose other verses. Buckley's version became the standard, and so most vocalists sing his verse progression now. But still, the original had many verses. Cohen had a more even, passive sound while Buckley's was more energetic and emotional. I agree with you that slower is better :)
Got online to watch something completely different when I saw this suggestion from TH-cam... Man am I glad I clicked on that video! I'm requesting that his version of this song be played at my funeral no matter how long it takes me to kick the bucket!!! BEAUTIFUL VOICE!!!
For those who think this song is about religion, um, read the lyrics (if you need a translation, you should check it out). It's about a violent sexual relationship ("love" in the most physical sense) gone terribly wrong. (The speaker--a musician--has hooked up with someone who never had anything in common with him--DUH. "you don't care for music do ya?" What did he expect?) The chorus--hallelujah-- is an example of verbal irony. It is simultaneously a celebration and a scream of pain. The first stanza uses a brutal lust story from the Bible as an example and, in case you missed it, draws attention to the mathematical underpinnings of its own haunting melody. This is a man's view of disappointment in love. Women are also hurt and disappointed, but their examples would be different.
***** Poets speak in metaphors. Biblical stories are powerful cultural touchstones. A poet like Leonard Cohen had to get the truth using shorthand because he's not writing a novel--aw to hell with it, I give up.
bluerabbit47 Actually, you're partially right and partially wrong. The song's overtones are indeed religious. However, it's not religion dealing with God, it's the religion of mowing lawns. Listen to the lyrics: "there was a secret cord" relates the ending of gasoline powered mowers and moving towards electrical mowers. "You saw her bathing on the roof. Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you.She tied you to a kitchen chair" discusses the difficulty of falling in love with a client. You cut her lawn, but you end up doing it for free now. "I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you. And even though it all went wrong..." is about the difficulty of changing blades on a mower in the middle of a large lawn and how it seems to never end. It's all pretty obvious once you read the lyrics.
Hannah, Jeff, this is the song played on the funeral for my dad... for some reason it was my innermost wish to be played. He, my dad, was the absolutely most unbelievable, life-mastering, most impressive and hearted man in any way I ever was allowed to meet. I am proud being here as his son, as a part of him, as he is part of me every day - and your version of this song is telling all this so exactly, so perfectly. Thank you!
Before Jeff Buckley did a cover of it, the song sounded completely different. If it weren't for his interpretation, we wouldn't have the version of the song we have today (the version this cover uses).
That's absolutely majestic and makes me cry. Bravo, Hannah! That's for me a moment when music is not just "a music", when it's really becoming an only ground which you stand upon.
Abo....Очень красиво поёт и играет, молодецы !!! если кто хочет фортепиано версию ковер Аллилуя советую нового на ютубе послушать, th-cam.com/video/nv9YmT8z2xM/w-d-xo.html
I came across your music around the time boyce found you, 10 years later?! This is still my absolute favourite performance of this song. Outstanding. Thanks for sharing :)
I'm having a hard time identifying exactly what's wrong with this. Sure it's good, but nowhere near as good as the original cover by Jeff. It just misses that subliminal angst/irony, maybe because of the butchered articulation of the lyrics in some parts or the too low voicing in the refrain. Anyone else having the same issue?
Dude, I troll more than anyone of attempted covers of Buckley's rendition... But this just isn't one to troll, brother. Go look at MANY more of these like I have. She's almost got the feels, she just doesn't quite lose herself like Buckley did. But honestly, not even Cohen himself could lose himself like Buckley did in this song. And he even removed and added his own verses to make it his own, making Buckley's "arrangement" his own in theory. It's what we Musicians call an, "Original Cover." So you have to understand, no one's EVER going to be able to do what Buckley did with this song. But she's DAMN close. She's just not willing to trade technique for emotion it seems. Not he fault though, she might not be a Songwriter herself
+Dennis Persson Same here, I don't feel comfortable with this version. It's the sound of the guitar, and the voice too. The song is most difficult, I wonder why everybody tries to cover this amazing song, hardly any cover version is worth listening to
***** Strictly speaking it should be Cohen / Cale; Cale's version uses a different set of lyrics -- written, but never recorded, by Cohen. That's the version that Buckley, and from there most everyone else, covers these days.
