I commute to Maui from Honolulu often for work. I flew everyday in 2016-2017. First flight to OGG and return on the 5:00ish pm flights depending on the current schedule. Sitting at the back of the plane is a different world than sitting in the front, such as first class. The engines are lound and have that winding sound. A few times I had to sit in the last row, 27 with no window and right next the the engine. In first class it's very quiet and such a different experience. These planes are workhorses, up and down all day every day. Hawaiian is a great airline.
When I was a kid living in Hawaii we did a few inter island flights on Aloha Airlines- using 737-200s. Maui was actually our last inter island vacation before we moved 2 days later.
Another great video! A few years ago, I had a chance to fly (as a passenger) Hawaiian from HNL to Kauai and back. A couple of great flights -- very professional and comfortable. I'd flown on Hawaiian's DC-9-30s back in 1989, and I found the Boeing 717 -- which is basically an updated DC-9-30 -- to be much quieter and more comfortable. Interisland flights are so enjoyable since they are flown at much lower altitudes than others are. Views are much better and since they are short, by definition, they aren't as tiring.
Hmmm. I’d have to look at my records to be sure, but it’s quite a few at this point. Granted, the vast majority of those trips were solely to film the flights, so I didn’t really get to do anything while there haha.
The inter-island 717's seem to make a much tighter turning radius to final on runway 8 than the larger jets from the mainland which seem to always go all the way out to Barbers Point before turning. That's been my experience anyway.
Awesome videos! I’m an aircraft refueler on Kauai, so it’s cool seeing videos from start finish here in Hawaii. What mount are you using to record the inflight sequences?
That would be my left or right hand depending on which side of the plane I’m on haha. I hold the camera by hand for all of my flights to make sure I get the best video possible. Mounting the camera to the window with a suction cup transfers too many vibrations into the camera. It gives the footage a “jitter.” Holding the camera by hand eliminates this because of the fat and muscle that’s absorbing it all.
I think it’s Hawaiian Airlines policy to push aircraft into the wind. They always push their aircraft into the wind, which is what happened here. Every time haha.
Because it still gets the job done. The 717 is a rugged, reliable aircraft, and is suited very well for this type of work. That said, I'm sure they're beginning to reach their service life. I've heard Hawaiian is starting to evaluate potential replacements. I've heard the A220 is top of their list right now.

There's a video of guys jumping out over Maui at around this altitude in a wingsuit. Can you imagine jumping out of that plane in just a wingsuit ?
I cannot. I’m one of those people who would say, why on earth would anyone ever jump out of a perfectly good airplane haha.
