The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Being Half-Black, Half-Korean in Korea

  • Meet Tony Smith.
    He's half-Black, half-Korean, hailing from the United States, and has been living in South, Korea for nine years. He's a dancer and photographer, and he approached the Halfie Project a while ago saying he had a story he wanted to share. We hope that the Halfie Project platform gives him a space to speak out and say what many people need to hear and probably what many other halfies might relate to.
    He looks on life with amazing optimism and creates beautiful art with his camera and dance moves ;) We hope you are as inspired by his story as we are!

      빅제임스 It would be great if Korean subtitles could be on these videos and the title be also in Korean as well as English because then people in South Korea who don’t speak English could watch these videos and be educated on the experiences of biracial people there.

      Sadly happens a lot in the U.S. especially in the past when it was stigmatized to be mixed/speak another language. I'm mixed Japanese and sadly do not know Japanese. I am married to a Korean and will make sure my kids speak both languages.

    Much of how he feels, I can understand. Though I am 100% Korean, my family and I left Korea when I was three. Since then, I grew up in many countries. So, when I visited Korea a few years ago, it was a learning process in discovering a part my identity. As an adult, I'm comfortable in knowing that I'm a bit of every culture that I grew up in.

  • @KateLove21
    @KateLove21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I totally got his comment about not viewing his mother as Korean/his dad as black. I'm mixed Japanese and growing up people would point to my grandma/mom and say "they're asian" (I look really European but still had people point out certain features but it seemed only confirmed what my mix was when they saw my mom or grandma) and I was just confused by their comments. As odd as it sounds I dont even think I really understood the concept of race until I was older. My grandma still speaks with a heavy Japanese accent and people had difficulty understanding her but I never got why. I would think "who are these weirdos. That's just my grandma/mom and clearly grandma just said XYZ aren't you listening to her at all?". No one had any talks with me about being mixed. As a teen I really began exploring my asian heritage and it was really awesome and satisfying to understand myself so much better, but at times really confusing too. My own children will be half Korean/half my mix and it is a completely different time than when I or my mom grew up. We plan on raising our kids equally between the cultures (visits to their non-majority residence regularly .. unsure if we will live in the U.S or Korea yet) and 100% making sure they speak both languages and understand from a young age who they are ethnically and culturally as a mixed person. I study Korean and lived in Korea for a number of yrs and my husband is a native Korean in the States currently so we understand what it's like being living between cultures and think its really important; particularly as a mixed person to know accept and love yourself. But yes in any case its always a personal journey.

    " New exotic fruit" love it! Imagine a world in which skin shade is not seen but only character and beautiful smiles. I have no problem with your mom not teaching you Korean. It is a lot more difficult than people understand. My sons did not learn Spanish as children and I don't let the remarks of others offend me in any way. People love to judge others. Live and let live. C'est la vie!!

    Tony is a cool Blasian soul brotha. I salute the brotha for being himself. Thank God for the Hip-hop nation and Heavy Metal nation. Bringing cultures together is unity and peace. And the Hip-hop nation is the melting pot of a United front. Does not matter the race or ethnicity, if you have GOD in your heart and love in your soul, you will have love back from the other ethnic groups. And the Hip-hop movement has the melting pot message to love all cultures. And the Biracial groups are the future of the World. Love everybody and love everyone.

    I have to be honest, I feel as a half korean half white man, creating a mixed asian child is the highest form of abuse with no regard to the experience of their child. The pain and confusion we experience is unrivaled. Especially in today's climate where people are becoming more tribal as crime, fear and chaos rise. The reality is we have no tribe, we aren't half anything, we're WHOLE people... and for 99% of us our parents are not a reflection of our WHOLE selves. This world is headed down a dark path and in my experience while I am accepted by both white and asian people, I know they'll both leave me outside in ghe cold if the natural order of tribalism returns. Save your money and get ready for the storm.

      The Halfie Project thank you for the content... it kinda gives me some kind of peace of mind.. I’m not really a mixed child .. but my grandpa is Afro- Latino and my grandma is full Latina but my parents are full Latinos (I guess) but anyway my point is that I’m pretty brown and my hair is curly and in high school it was weird that I was not really accepted in the Latinos “click” lol so I mostly hung out with the Africans or the Asians it’s was sooo weird going through high school so I related a lot with his story ... thank you for this 💕😌
