  • We take a look at this medieval-themed alleyway book nook from miniAlley, the latest design in their line of alleyway diorama shelf inserts. This design makes great use of an angled mirror to extend the scene beyond its 9.5"x8" formfactor, and includes built-in LED lighting and a little foliage to accompany the laser-cut plywood construction. We also laser-cut a wood frame to give the exterior some extra visual flair.

    That's really cool. I didn't even know those were a thing.
    My one critique would be that the switch seems out-of-place. Having a push-button "brick" that blended with the wall would've been a nice touch.

      I agree. That’s a bit cheapish, isn’t it? I mean the things costs hundreds of bucks and has such a nice overall design, and then there is this very visible standard switch? 😒

    Having the book sitting adjacent either side glued to the walls of the diorama after coring them out through the side thats glued could allow for that "bigger space than it really is" illusion
    The books are basically just a misdirection and ability to hide the scenery that extends outside the normal diorama space.

    Hmm, a 45deg mirror and then cheat heavily and have a side extension that is reflected to extend visibly well beyond the 'back' of the bookcase would be awesome. Might have to attempt it.

    Norm. Thank you very much for sharing my Medieval miniAlley design. If anyone interested, please check out our Kickstarter campaign for more views and pictures.
    I appreciate many positive feedbacks from you and will strive to improve. I will include an add-on so that user can make the exterior beautiful if they would like. Alternative to battery use, I know some previous customers bought "battery to plug" converter on Amazon.

      Search for "book nook" on TH-cam, there are some specialized equipment that can help, yes, but you very much can conceivably make one of those with low cost supplies and garbage. Dioramas in general can be a surprisingly cheap hobby if you're clever about it, no hobby is "cheap" strictly speaking, but this is definitely one that doesn't need to break the bank unless you want to.

    • @scottmantooth8785
      @scottmantooth8785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jherazob
      @jherazob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@scottmantooth8785 Seriously, you don't need much!
      Here's a video about what's needed to start making wargames terrain building, it's about 90% overlap with what you need to start making dioramas and you can go without the 10% extras at the start: th-cam.com/video/-pGLE8mjjRE/w-d-xo.html
      That's *DEFINITELY* not bank breaking or even bending, and you might even have some of those already at home!
      Again, no hobby is technically "cheap", but this is one of the few where you don't need much to start. And book nooks are very much just a diorama with some specific limitations, it's the same. If you wanna go down this road you can even if your budget is tight. You can spend a lot in tools and specialized materials and a 3D printer and many other things, but none of that is required and you can go very, very far without any of that.

    iQ MAX makes several kits. I have two for Harry Potter series, Diagon Alley and Hogwarts moving staircase. Be aware, these sell for different prices, do you home work. They also ship without paints and glue due to custom rules. Don't believe what is in writing about paints and glue included. They cannot ship that past customs. Pay attention when paying LOOK AT THE Shipping and handling prices. Sometimes a kit pay be affordable and they sneak $100 for shipping.

      Good points! For the first one, maybe sealing the thing with transparent acrylic should help, not sure. For the second one, it should be on the bookshelf, generally not their prime target, but you might want to make terrain just for the kids to play with (or even make it with them!), so that they don't touch that one, classic misdirection :P

      The lighting is designed to be more cinematic, to keep the attention on the action going on (whatever it is he's talking about) while making the rest of the room vanish to the eye. Adam shoots in the shop with just the shop lights on, because the shop is part of the overall story he's telling.
      It's not too dark, it's just different.

    • @gsterneman

      @@Bad_Wolf_Media @Axe Avier I actually found that it made harder to see the book nook. Same with all the other videos he's shot like this. The whole video is just too dark and it makes it hard to see.
      I like that he has a brightness contrast between the background and foreground. I'm not asking for that to change. I'm a theatre tech and videographer, so I get it. But the whole thing just needs kicked up a notch on the EV meter. I can't see what he's trying to show me.
