I read The Starless Sea a couple of months ago. The first two thirds of the book were great, I was loving it. I even wondered if it was going to be a new favorite.
Sadly, the moment the main villain showed up to blow up the library and Dorian fell into the hole, the entire book took a nose dive for the worst. Hated the last 150 pages. Ended up giving it 3/5.

A Deadly Education: 4.5/5 stars, and surprisingly one of my favorites of the year so far! It took me a minute to get used to the main character and the conversational writing style - I wasn't sure I would like either. But it soon won me over. Nothing about this book is typical, which I think is why it worked so well for me.
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars: 3/5 star rating... much better than Eragon for sure, all things considered. But you've already touched on the issue - 800+ pages. It was too long-winded. There were a couple of repetitive plot points and one tangent one involving a blue staff that could've been removed completely (imo) without affecting anything else (other than making it flow better).
I liked the Night Circus for all the reasons you mentioned - it definitely was more about the experience and style than the plot. I think it appealed to me so much because I'd never read anything like it before (you know how people who don't read a lot of a genre love the first thing they come across because they don't know what they're missing). Anyway, I don't feel in any hurry to get to her newest book. One was kind of enough lol.

To me, what worked so well with the starless sea is my attempt to connect all the stories together and the fact that you fall deeper and deeper into the world without seing the end of it. I admit that it is not for everyone but for me it was perfection !

"I have done it - I touched the kitty" is honestly the most wholesome thing I've seen all week ❤
I wish TNC and SS had more substance rather than style? I think that's where I fell with her as an author just... vague. And I will never forgive Paolini for eragon 😆

I didn’t like the Starless Sea. It felt like she was trying to convince me something really deep and meaningful was happening, but when I thought about it there really wasn’t much substance . There were a lot of beautiful words that didn’t really seem to mean much..

I felt the same way about Uprooted, the magic system made no sense to me, I HATED the romance, and the "strong female friendship" mostly consisted of the two characters shouting each others names. I, however, adored Spinning Silver. It pulled from known folklore for its magic and the romance felt very well earned. If you can't get A Deadly Education, I highly recommend checking out Spinning Silver instead

I was really nervous for the starless sea because I hadn't enjoyed the night circus, but I ended up liking it a lot more (the bar was low). I think the audiobook helped, but also the fact that I was just going along for the ride, not expecting a point to the story.

I had a weird experience with The Starless Sea. I think at first with the library and everything I was loving it, and it sort of fell apart. I just let myself enjoy the writing and the world and tried not to think about it - but yeah, the second part had no plot and was a bit hard to get through. I LOVE the night circus so I bought it full price on release day, and I think in the future I will still read her stuff but try it at the library and buy it later if I love it.

I thought the same as you for the first half of uprooted but I changed my mind halfway through. The main character grew a lot throughout the story, and the romance was fully realized only when she became on equal footing with the man. It really subverted my expectations in that way.

I did the same challenge, you gave me the idea, but with V.E. Schwab. I wanted to give Paolini and Naomi Novik another chance too with their new books (hated Uprooted and Eragon) but I couldn‘t get them from the library. Fortunately V.E. Schwab could finally win me over with Addie LaRue after Vicious and Shades of magic left me utterly disappointed, so the challenge went definitely better for me than it did for you 😂 Thanks for that!

After the last Eragon books, I don't think I'll ever pick up anything by Paolini ever again...Finished 'A Deadly Education' two days ago and gave it four stars. Brilliant worldbuilding, sassy and sarcastic main character BUT lots of very not elegant info-dump which pulled the rating down. No issues with romance in this one, there's probably a small romance starting at the end, but it was small enough to not affect my experience. Recommend it to anyone who likes sarcasm and sassy narrators.

I started buddy reading To Sleep In A Sea of Stars with some friends. Two of my friends love it and me and another friend want to DNF it. Honestly: the writing is horrid to me, the characters are flat, and the story takes way to long to get going. It's also very generic sci-fi. I love sci-fi for the ideas and this isn't it. I have read 250 pages and nothing interesting has happened so far. No more Paolini for me either I guess 😅

Maybe I should do a similar challenge with Vladimir Nabokov. I was so excited to read his stuff but I HATED Lolita and ended up DNF'ing it after struggling for over a month

I feel your struggles with the Starless Sea... the writing and the world is beautiful, but there is just no story, it’s so boring? I really really wanted to like it, but I ended up having to force myself to finish it 🙄 I 100% understand why people would enjoy it, though, the atmosphere of it creates is gorgeous

I tried to read Uprooted and DNF’d it half way through. I could not get into the book or her writing so I probably won’t read A Deadly Education either.

A little late to the party, but I trudged through To Sleep in a Sea of Stars bc it was *just* interesting enough to keep me reading. And while the ending was worth the effort, the entire story was ruined for me when Paolini - a male author - wrote about the suit restart Kira's cycle and how she didn't realize what cramps feel like. It didn't add to the story at all, and read more like Paolini was flexing his "skills" at writing a female character. It didn't sit right with me and knocked a couple stars off my rating.

Oh gosh I agree! I don't understand why male authors write about periods... it's never done well!

1.4 speed is how I listen to audiobooks and I thought it was fast. 😂

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It really depends on the book tbh! Usually 1.4-1.5 is my speed but I’ve definitely done 1.25 or 1.85 (don’t remember the book but it was narrated so sloooow!)
I’ve heard people say they do it at 2-3x and I don’t know how lol

@@BookswithEmilyFox yup, that's me. Personally I can't concentrate if it's at it's usual speed. The slower narrators get a 2.5,3× for sure but books with jam packed details get around 1.5. Not gonna lie, starless sea, it was at 3× and it still wasn't fast enough because I just wanted to be done with it 😭
