    On a 2002 Pacific Cup race in my 30’ sailboat, our rudder post got weakened by storm force 10 winds (45-55 knots) and 30’ waves and finally broke off and was lost...1000 miles from both the US and Hawaii. The emergency rudder brackets fractured after 4 days and we resorted to a make shift spinnaker pole and emergency rudder attached to it. It was sketchy at best. My wife arranged for a Manson container ship to bring us another J-24 rudder, in case we lost out ‘contraption’. We were met at 2 am, no moon, wind and waves. The lee side of the ship (800’) provided some protection from the wind and waves, but the under current almost pulled the boat into the ship as we maneuvered to get supplies and the mast was only inched from hitting the superstructure of the ship. At first the ship only slowed up, but we couldn’t keep up, so they so had to stop. We were very lucky not to get tangled up and lose the mast with 450 miles left to limp sail to Oahu, Hawaii. We made it to Oahu finally adding 9 days to the crossing. Out of 4 sailboats with broken rudders we were the only ones that made it. One was lost at sea (abandoned), and two large sailboats (55’ & 70’) were towed back to Los Angeles. There was no turning back due to the weather for us, the others were closer to LA because of the staggered starts several days apart; we were further along the route as a result. 😎

  • @jakebrakebill
    @jakebrakebill 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does that count as a required training that the ship was going to have to do anyway ? If not, I would have to imagine it wasn't cheap for the ship to do that.

    • @Northseakayak
      @Northseakayak  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes the ship needs to wait upon re-enter the harbour for flood tide (otherwise too shallow). If we happen to be in the neighboorhood on that specific moment....😉
