If South Africa can have truth and reconciliation I don't see why we can't. Racism and white supremacy and our history of slavery are festering wounds and the only way to cure our nation from this disease is to bring it into the light of day, clean out the wounds and do what we can to restore those who have been harmed.

Well that's the crux of the current conversation, isn't it?
The right wants Confederate statues to remain in the light of day, but they want CRT snuffed out before it even gets started.
And if simply teaching an honest accounting of American History is so controversial, you can forget about repairing the damage.

I think that King, et al., had that in mind during the Civil Rights Movement. A more apt question would be why did White America reject truth and reconciliation and instead declared victory over Black America, yet again. I'd love to hear thoughts from the comment section.

@@andreabrown4541 Because, the CNNs of the time, the mainstream media, told us that these BLM-like black freed slaves, are "burning down the South". Did you see alot of liberal leadership ever challenge the right wing claims that BLM burned down cities? No. No Democratic Party leader ever defended BLM against even when the accusations became so ridiculous as to include burning down whole cities. Obviously no one in the mainstream media had the courage to wade into controversies such as who escalated first, or lets be clear no specific BLM activist is accused of any specific offense, or in any way to help BLM because the we decided it STILL isnt good politics.

South Africa has a 4x higher homicide rate today than it did in the 1920s. South Africa ranks in the Top 10 for Intentional Homicide rates per capita. There are "Smash and Grab" and "Crime Alert" road signs in South Africa, that's how common crime is.
My point is that South Africa is a failed society, and this is not one that we should want to emulate in The United States.
We already have "truth". Go to any public school in America, and you will learn about slavery, the American Civil War, and Jim Crow laws. You cannot avoid it. What other "truth" needs to be "discovered" or taught?
As for "reconciliation", this is up to each individual, as they interact with their local communities.
For systemically, no amount of funds, apologies, or anything will ever be enough. There will always be the argument that because slavery and "the legacy of slavery" happened, that black people today (regardless of where they came from) are 25 steps behind, and they need a boost in society, no matter how much time will go by, or how much governmental money is spent. We could be in the year 2829, and the argument will still be that black people were treated historically poorly, and they need a leg up.

We live in a time with so many adjacent dynamics to reconstruction, and the periods after with labor. Would love more content on this from MR. Great guest.

What about the Peons in the South? You might think slavery was ended with the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, but it continued in the form of indentured slavery until FDR end it in September 1942. Black people were routinely arrested and charred with any kind of misdemeanor or felony, which would deny them the vote and place upon them a fine, which they couldn't pay immediately. The judge would have them all put in a work camp to pay off the company who paid their fine to the court, and they could remain in their custody for years, trying to payoff a debt that would sometimes increase in interest and living expensive. At one time in the 1920, 20% of all Black People in the South were held in slavery this way.

@@andreabrown4541 not sure what you mean by "replicated the same failure." Genuinely interested to know.
I agree that the Democrats have been more or less feckless on many social issues, but it's not the same thing as deliberately undercutting social progress.
And as a liberal who feels the Democrats have been disappointingly effective, at least the party favors things like CRT and DEI, while the Republicans are staunchly opposed.
