@@Mega7492 Yup I really like older, all-mechanical diesels. Some favorites being Cummins 5.9 and 8.3 and the Mercedes 4 and 5 cylinder diesels up until about 84/85. There might be a 10,000 subscriber giveaway, but since my videos kinda suck right now, it might take a while. And I have a Detroit to give away, but a while it may be.
Remember this , it is not how long you crank, it is how fast you crank. Diesels are compression ignition engines. Warm up the engine oil and use the right grade of oil. Make sure your batteries are warm and fully charged. Use a battery blanket to warm up batteries. I have started this type of engine as low as -40 C same as -40 F . You can do a lot of damage if the engine does start and the engine oil is to thick to be pumped to the bearings. An engine coolant block heater DOESN'T warm up the oil in the pan, the engine can start but you get no lube to the engine bearings
@CaelanR It is though, -40f and -40c are the same temp, it's the over lap point of the two scales, just like how horsepower and torque cross at 5252 rpm meaning the hp and tq will be equal because they are 2 forms of measuring the same thing just like Fahrenheit and Celsius so there is a cross point where they are equal.
Actually, straight 40wt but it really was dumb cold. I was trying to get it into the shop to replace the block heater which obviously didn't work. I'm sure that CenPeCo was like tar.
Thanks. This is a 6V92 with a turbo, meaning it's a V-6 with 92 cubic inches per cylinder. It supposedly makes 335hp, but it was a fire truck and I think it's been tickled a little. Feels more like 375 or so. And yeah buddy, never rev 'em cold. This old girl (1984) only has 23,600 original miles on it so no starting fluid either. Peace.
After recent experiences I would have to reconsider my guesstimate of 335-375hp. It appears that this puppy makes more like 515horsepuppies @2500rip'ems and I know that sounds absurd. Turns out Detroit powered fire trucks come ready to party.

Let me know if you have a guest room available. Peace.
Lol. Old detroits didn't have glow plugs. Only thing they had options for was a block heater, intake heater and there was a ether capsule dispenser deal at one time you could option for. I will agree with ya on the rpm thing on starting them. A Detriot that's tuned up and adjusted correctly only needs some good batteries to get her fired up. A two stroke Detroit with a air starter is beautiful music.
Well yeah with that much either you could probably get to Titanic to finish it's maiden voyage LoL I have a straight six Detroit in my drill rig and I don't care if it's 10 below zero outside that thing will crank one to two times in fire right up every time.
Rather have diesel wash down my cylinders than ether. Diesel in itself is a lubricant. Not only is starting fluid not a lubricant, but it removes any that are present. One squirt of ether would have ruined this video. Lol.
